Thanks 4all. That little scroll at the end about F2 to turn on the disk was the crux of the biscuit. However, after that, my system acknowledged a new disk was there, but nothing else happened. I had to goto Disk Management and manually initialize and format. So much for plug & play with XP.

@yannickharv You should be able to add another 2 ( 2GB modules) to the computer. Its just a case of carefully slotting in the new modules. the only thing that limits how much RAM you can put in your computer is the amount of slots on the motherboard. I hope this helped.

It's worth noting that you need to know what kind of SATA data cable you need. My Dell does not hold a straight data cable. It's almost the same casing as in the video, but the insides are slightly different. I had to get an angled (drive) to straight (motherboard) data cable.

Thanks for the video. I'm not planning on adding/replacing a harddrive on my Dell, but the mother board is fried and I'm trying to transfer it. I've done a few things before, but never worked with the harddrive and I just wanted to get a better idea of how to take it out. That wasn't the focus of the video, but I think I have a better idea of what I'm going to be doing (as opposed to just reading directions... I prefer to see how things work).

If you are talking about the space in the case, this particular machine is built according to the so called BTX form factor, so it needs open space to make air circulate in the case and cool components. If you are talking about the free bay think that MacPro has three of them free, not one :-D

That is great !! Just wonder if you know what is the best hard drive for the dell dimension 3100. I need one that is not too expesive.. You know I only had this computer 2 years and I can't get world of warcraft to work right. Replaced the RAM that helped but there are still errors in some parts of WOW. yes I reinstalled 3 time or more and reformated the D drive so it would work better. defrag check for errors and such. what else is there?

As a computer technician, please install at your own risk if you doing it over carpet. In Winter time, it lot safer to operate electronic compare to Summer dues to static. However, if you are like me who not a pansy about static, make sure you install it on the table. Alway! Disconnect power cord before operating it. People will miss this step often and find them having to start over installing parts.

Where are the power cables? In the video the power cables are hanging right above the HD slot but actually they are kept tied by that white thing with two balls above the old hard drive, that must be untangled to release the cables.

Ooo-I found this vid on Google. I have a pretty old (secondhand from a friend) Dell Dimension that came with Win98SE on it (not sure of the exact age tho-it's a TSP-T700r) that I want to add more space to. Can you tell from my info if I'm able to add a second harddrive to it, or if it's too old? It works fine-the space is getting limited (I've freed up all that I can.) Or would a memory card be better? I think the Dimension is PATA (Parrallel ATA) but im not sure. Not many people are well educated on the 3000 (i have one as well)

I got a Dell dimension 3100, I just touched my hard drive caddie and one bit broke off, then I replaced it, I had a 3year extended warranty. they would not fix it, also i need to replace my pci retention slot. PCI Retention Bracket Service Kit, External, Contains R6767 & W6246 Just a tiny clip broke off nothing important, but don't know how to replace. Those Indian techs. Thank you for the video. Forget Dell.

I have an E310, but when I tried to install my hard drive my computer was missing the spare blue hard drive rail thing...you have to get one from Dell for like $20. I'm pissed off! The least they could frickin do is include the rail if they are going to give you a spare drive bay in the first place.

your lucky you can add anything to a dell pc, they permenently stick parts to the case with screws only they have the equipment to unscrew. They are almost unupgradeable.

Not that hard. Go into it and you should see memory info or something like that.(It differs between motherboards) and go into that part and it says there are 2 hard drives and just go to the second one and turn it on. If you don't think this is help. Go to google and search it or even go to youtube and search

well i don't have a clue where the extra slot came from... xD There's only 2 ;) you could put as big a hard drive as you like in the thing, but why waste money on such and old crappy computer when you could just get a laptop with enough hard drive space and likely 10x more powerful than the 5150 for the same price as a big hard drive like that.
