this tutorial helped me no end, it taught me in five minutes what would otherwise taken me half a hour to find out. i had no idea about all that slave/master stuff before.

IF you make the new hard drive the slave, can you install programs to it and run them off it. For example, if I wanted to install Adobe CS3 to my new Western Digital 2T (this drive being the slave) would it still run?

yes you can set the old drive as slave to retrieve data assuming it's not corrupt and/or broken. no, you will not have two C: drives those letters are assigned to drives by the OS and it will adjust the respective designations in almost all cases.

I want to install a new hard drive into my computer and install a fresh windows on it, but i want to transfer all the old files to the new one. Can i just set the old hard drive (including the old OS on it) as primary slave and copy all my files to the new hard drive, without any trouble? I mean, don't you have double C: drives then (from the new and the old hard drive)? After all, both hard drives are formatted into C: drives.

it depends on if that 20gb HDD is from that same computer, because if its not then that one will have different drivers of the motherboard on it and it wont boot up with your comp.

nickelback052893, did set the jumper correctly like the guy in the video did? You'll want to set it to MASTER, only then will it boot into Windows. Make sure your using the right cable, there's primary master and secondary master. The CD-R drive is usually Secondary, -- unless you've switched them?

"Be careful when handling a hard drive, they are very sensitive to shock and dropping or jarring one even from a small height can potentially damage it" i dropped 2 hard drives (at the same time by accident) 10 feet at about 15 MPH (this is directional speed, not falling speed) down a flight of stairs and both still work. Made a hell of noise falling, but both spun up and were detected. Takes more than you may think to break a hard drive.

I have been known to use duct-tape or zip-ties in such instances, you want to be sure not to block any fans or vents when doing this and if using duct-tape use as little as possible as you don't want to insulate your drive.
@Grutnee16 жыл бұрын
If your computer is reading 2, when you have one, then that means it's Partitioned. Basically, you can make multiple hard Drives, that add up to the total Memory on the HDD(s) Its useful because Windows XP can only format sizes up to 32GB, so having multiple Partitions is useful, if one wants to format only part of their HDD.

ata=former name of ide/pata before sata came out ide has a wide ugly ribbon cable..... sata=serial ata is going to be quite a bit shorter than a ide drive, much faster because it has serial data transfer instead of parallel data transfer and the cable from the drive to the motherboard is much smaller and circular instead of flat and the connector on it is going to look sort of like this: [-]>....lol
