Safety is in our top 5 priorities here on JerryRigEverything, and that Includes adding brakes to both the front AND rear tires at the same time. Stopping power is ALWAYS a good thing. Here is the lever we used: amzn.to/2FGf4Ru it pulls both brake cables at the same time. Let me know if you have any more suggestions!!
With the cable disk brakes working on all four tires, Cambry will be able to stop sooner, and have more traction on slick, or gravel surfaces. Bring on the snow.

So collective ideas from the guys below: 1. marry her 2. separate front brake and rear brake for better braking modulation, especially during downhill descending. 3. from the previous video: tubeless for better puncture-resistant, light-weight, and better mileage 4. Switch from Mechanical disc brake to hydraulic --> better stopping power with less force applied 5. Rear shock-absorber 6. This is just my 2 cent but.... can we do something about reversing? if it's a conventional wheelchair she could easily back up, but since this is a motorized version, it's kinda tricky :-? 7. Reflectors, front n rear, easiest way? slap some reflector tape on it. 8. put a helmet on for her since she's a speed demon lol 9. Parking Brake maybe? 10. Marry her.

I would suggest hydraulic brakes. They are a little bit harder to install, but the force reuqired on the lever to stop the bike (especially with this heavy one) is lower. It's also relativly simple to get the oil flow to all brake cylinders. Oh and I would also suggest to use bigger brake discs, since the mechanical advantage through the leverage is bigger with those :) If I made mistakes, please excuse them, I'm from Germany and my English is a bit rusty since my degree :)

And if you use roughly the same length of hydraulic hose the pressure in the brakes should equalize, and it means that the brakes should break equally even if one of them has less breaking pads.

Hi - A couple of suggestions. 1. Fill tyres with water - I do this with my tractor, it adds weight right where you need it most for better traction and roll stability. 2. upgrade to front hub motors in addition to the rear - run them in parallel with the same controllers and give you 4 wheel drive. 3. If you go with front hub motors you could flip one front wheel backwards (Reverse the tire so it still looks "right") connect the flipped wheel separately onto a different accelerator mounted by Cambrys' hip. This would take you down to 3 wheel drive going forwards but you would gain a rudimentary 1 wheel drive reverse.

The off-road wheelchair is currently my favourite thing on the internet! Great work. I always respected your hard and beautiful work and inspired me to take apart cellphones and so on, but this is a whole new level! Thank you really! And to make Cambry experience something she never dreamt of is priceless actually! So huge thumbs up for you and all best wishes for her to enjoy this ride safely! Just a small note, I think it’d be better if each handle controlled the same tires ( one for both rear and one for both front tires ) I mean it is safer ( to avoid spinning in high speeds ) and easier ( since you don’t have to use both of them all the time ) It would require an extra long brake wire but it won’t be difficult to you! And it’s worth the extra work, believe me.

Put a ~90% angle on the handles. make them into joysticks or pistol grips or like a pod racer. That will give her a firmer grip on the controls and more confidence. You can take what you have now just cut and weld them at an angle no big mod needed.
@ZacharieLanoue
@ZacharieLanoue 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome build! Long time MTN bike racer and mechanic here, have also made a 4 wheeler bike, saying that from a safety and ergonomics standpoint you should mount your break levers pointing down at around a -30 degree angle , this gives you a mechanical advantage using the squeeze power of the hand and will give you direct control of the bars. If it's not ergonomic to do this than change the bar angle and position. I can see that you have a clearance issue with the top tube of the frame and the throttle control, use the natural angle at which the fingers dangle over the handles to set the angle of the break levers, rotate the throttle out of the way. When your hands are resting on the bars, the meat in between the thumb and pointer provide the throttle control while also providing bar grip.

Beautiful project! I hope someday it will be for sale for everyone who needs it! It has some uphill traction problems on the gravel ... probably due to the CG too far ahead of the rear wheel axle. I think it can be improved by adding 2 independent suspensions on the rear wheels (5 / 10cm of excursion) to allow a uniform unloading of the weight on the driving wheels. Maybe an adjustable gas type, so you have stability on asphalt and comfort and traction on dirt. Sincere congratulations! I'm waiting for new videos and news!

If possible, you should put both rear brakes on 1 lever and both front brakes on another. This will make it so she can hit both rear brakes with one hand, giving more stable braking without worrying about having to hit both brake levers at once. It may take extra long brake cables (you can tie them across the steering bar) but it will add a lot of stability.
@another3997

Great to see he did this upgrade. For anyone riding or making a bike/trike/quad, just remember that around 70 percent of the total braking ability is generated by the FRONT tyres. As Zack found out, back tyres lose grip due to inertia/weight transfer. Good for doing skids, bad for stopping.

GREAT WORK THERE FELLA!! Agree with some of your comments 1 leaver to do front and other to do back but getting equal breaking force on both front or both back is going to be a pain! Hydraulic is DEFINITELY the way to go as uses less force to apply! Is there anything available so that when she let's go or back's off throttle that the electronic motor acts like a break like these modern " 1 pedal " ofelectronic cars Keep up the good work there fella

If you don't intend to have searing brakes like on a bulldozer or farm tractor I see no reason for connecting each side separately. If you still want two handles you have two serious and safe options: 1. One front and one rear, like on a normal bike. No risk of it pulling to either side in an emergency situation. And shouldn't be able to tip over. 2. Connect the brakes in a diagonal pattern. Front right and rear left. Even if just one brake is used it shouldn't to pull in either direction. Just like dual circuit brakes on any vehicle. However, if both handles are used with uneven pressure it may pull. The best and also simplest way would be to connect all four brakes to the same leaver. Simpler to use and always brakes on all wheels. It could be a good idea to adjust it so that the front brakes a little bit more than the rear, like on a car. 60-40 or something like that. No problem hooking up multiple brakes to one single leaver. Car manufactures has bin doing this for ages on parking brakes.

@jacobshepherd3997 5 жыл бұрын
Johannes Gustavsson I agree with you on every point but the last one. Those are mechanical disk brakes, they already take a decent amount of force compared to good hydraulic disk brakes to stop. My last bike had mechanical disk breaks, and on long descents my knuckles wouldn’t be white from hard gripping by the bottom. Then spread that force out to 4 different rotors plus the friction in the system from the lines running through the cable housing. And I doubt you would have hardly any stopping power
@JohannesGustavssons
@JohannesGustavssons 5 жыл бұрын
Good point!! Didn't think about that at all. Maybe it would be possible to create a mechanical advantage. But in that case the brakes would need to be very precisely adjusted as the travel of the brakes radically decrees. Any play would be fatal for the function of the brakes.

Nice job, but I do have some suggestions. 1. Add lights In the Handel holes where you saw off the other side of the Handel 2. Add plastic covers at the wheels for wet weather 3. Safety belts if there is an accedent, she won't fly off the seat. 4. Emergency safety lights (parking lights) that people (drivers) can see her in the later hours when she is "standing" still. 5. Parking breaks, as you have mentioned in the previous video. That's it for now, keep up the good work.

@@batagnam there's no clean solution for this type of problems...but if someone wishes there's a lot of after market tools/parts to solv this problems... i mean if you want the most out of this you can use "hydraulic brakes if you want...than it will be one leaver for front and one rear...and you can use only one line for rear and at the brakes you can use a 'T' splitter... i mean at first this will be a messy as hell...but if you can stick to the plan you'll get a braking system which is verry powerful and aloso efficient :) ✌

Awesome design! just a few quick tips from a bike mech: I'd at least put both front on one side and both rear on the other like many others have said. Also if you need to get the grips off again, use some compressed air between the bar and grip and a quick shot of hairspray to get it back on smoothly. Saves me a lot of time and frustration!

I use quad brakes on my touring bike because I tow a heavy camper trailer. I found that I had good control when I used single levers mounted a bit apart and on slightly different clock angles on my handlebars. That way it gave me the use of either V-brakes (front or rear) or disk brakes (front or rear) or any combination thereof. I noticed that your brake levers are atop the bars. I wonder if some sort of centered single axis handlebar might be more ergonomic and would allow multiple hand positions. I imagine that the current setup could be fatiguing on long downhills. It would be heavier and would need more mechanism to get the Ackerman angles right, but I suspect that it may be something to try in the future. I recognize that getting into the chair may be made more difficult this way, but no solution is perfect. Great job! Keep going! Your experiment appears to be the way to go in the future. Ten years from now, we will be seeing these all over the place!

Since I'm a mountain biker I have some suggestions that might help, as many ppl already said, keeping the front brakes on the same lever and rear brakes on the other lever might be safer and easier to set up, you could flip the levers down too, they are designed to use them in such way, it might help her to have less stress on her thumbs, about tyres I would go really low on pressure, fat bikes are designed to run very low pressure for traction purposes, having 4 wheels and as light as she looks I would run them very very low, and would consider to go tubeless too, I'm running tubeless and the risk of going flat almost disappeared, keep it up, you are doing and amazing job

I suggest 2 things. First, flip the handlebar stem on the right side so that it falls to the middle of the frames as the right bar does. Then spin the left bar so the handle and brake levers are closer to the centerline of the bike. This would make them symmetrical and probably more comfortable. Second, put the bottom brackets (where cranks and pedals were mounted) back on the bikes and use those as pivots for the seat assembly. You can solidly mount or weld the cross bar to those to maintain rigidity side to side. Then create another cross bar to connect the bikes at or near the rear hubs. Use this second cross bar and the seat assembly to mount a rear shock from a cross country bike. I suggest just one because it is only supporting Cambry's weight. Two may seem more stable, but that setup would be pretty stiff.
