I look at options to add CO2 to my custom discus aquarium, hoping to keep everything in the sump.

Hi, I really want to have a discus planted tank with co2, but there is Very little information on the internet on whether it is healthy for the fish and should be done

Tank looks good! Think your probably going about it the best way. Is the sump compartmentalised? If so as the water passes over the walls you will loose a lot of CO2, which is a similar problem to what I had. However that just means you’ll need to put slightly more in, so no big deal. There is not benefit to putting it in the tank at all! I have CO2 running in my planter discus tank right now. Are you dosing EI?

I know this is an old video but how often do you have to refill your co2 canister at 3-4bps?

great video again! nice to see you've had a shave. . I wouldn't worry about losing Co2 through the walls of the hoses your using. . it's a myth. . your far more likely to lose Co2 through any connections in the setup. . I would personally put the defuser in the tank as close to the bottom and out of sight as possible. . but then i like to see the Co2 being diffused into the water column. . i place mine under where my return is so its releases straight into alot of flow thus dispersed around the tank well. . you will lose Co2 to the atmosphere it's just something to accept. . one of the reasons why you should turn the Co2 on an hour before your lights and it goes off and hour after your lights. . lots of theory on this. . either way it's going to be beneficial to your aquarium. . 3/4 drops per sec seems high tho

I've set up a SodaStream co2 system very simple just taking a tube attached to the SodaStream injector and injecting the gas into a bottle in my tank which has the bottom cut off and is attached with some suckers. Diffusing into the tank very slowly via the water surface in contact with the gas in the bottle. Don't need a regulator or any of that just an old soda stream some tubing and a plastic bottle and some suckers

I use that sort of system in one of my smaller tanks - old fashioned, but effective

Reason not use normal airline is because the acidity of the co2 will eventually break down/erode the costing on the airline tubing causing an eventual leak

Hi! Great video, I also very much enjoyed the aprils fool one! I have some suggestions for your CO2 system if you don't mind, they are just my thoughts on it: Some plastic hoses (like silicone) are quite permeable towards CO2 gas, so you may loose some gas through the wall of those tubes. PVC or PU hoses (or whatever the dedicated hoses are made of) are much better at preventing CO2 gas to diffuse through the wall. However, the overall loss of co2 is probably minimal. So apart from that I don't see any reason not to use regular airline hose, as long as the working pressure is not too high so your connections stay put. Regarding the dissolution of the CO2 gas, maybe it's an idea to build a DIY reactor from some PVC pipe, or a Cerges style reactor? These are really simple and cheap devices that can achieve >99% solvation of the CO2. Your sump pump is likely powerfull enough to handle a bit more pipework :) Also I didn''t see a checkvalve in your setup, maybe a good idea to put one in and protect your solonoid and regulator from possible back siphoning of water? Hope it helps!

Nice setup but I would get a Co2 reactor that way you will not get that soda pop bubble look in your tank and you will use less Co2 as well as more Co2 will be dissolved into the water. I'm lucky my planted tank is canister filtered with a sun sun 602 as a pre filter before my main filter. I use a inline diffuser on the intake line to the pre filter so the Co2 has to go through the pre filter sponges then through the main filter no bubbles make it to the tank. Now I use a little over 1/2 of the Co2 that I used to use when I was using a diffuser like yours. By the way normal air line Co2 can permeate through its walls and depending on how long it is can waist a noticeable amount go to a home brew shop they should have it and cheap.

I think I need to look into a reactor more - I sort of ended up trying to DIY on in the sump but gave up in the end!

You're puitting CO2 into your filter? I thought the idea of filters was max O2. Wont that risk acidifying the small volume more than it would the volume of the tank?
@AquariumAdventures
@AquariumAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think so - I don't necessarily view the tank and sump volume separately they are connected after all and water in the sump becomes water in the tank and vice versa several times an hour.

Cylinder like that on such a size tank would last 2 weeks to get propper co2 concentration circa 20-30mg/l If it helps in the future purchase Yourself metronidazole from e bay. Good to have just in case Discuss would not appreciate higher levels of co2.

@@AquariumAdventures Ok. Discus is a little bit more demanding fish than others we agree on that one? As well as Pterophyllum F1 what I keep. If the conditions becoming not quite ok for those fish, often they develop health problems and usually getting parasites as flagella or nematodes. Aquatic treatments offered by comapanies are not working because they can't contain substances as antibiotics. Belive me, I've beeen there. Here is why I sugested just to have metro on board just in case. In case fish fieces start to look like gelly sausage or fish start to have problem with eating. I run planted aquariums with co2 and ferts and everything, suprisingly ferts are not so disturbing factor but co2 can cause problems with fish on the long run. Anyways I'm not trying to challenge Your content on the videos or force-educate anybody. As I said. Do whatever You want with it.

Hi - appreciate it is hard to have a discussion with differing viewpoints without it quickly becoming 'a fight' on the internet! Apologies, I responded overly harshly. However - I still don't agree! I just think it is a VERY big leap between "I think I might start dosing CO2" and "Well you had better get some Metro in"

Any way to get the bubbles into the hose on the output side of the pump? The gas going into the impellor might be joining the bubbles together as they get trapped going round and round. You can get inline diffusers but I guess it depends on the diameter of your output pipe. JBL have various sizes to fit tubing up to 19/25mm for tank up to 800l. www.jbl.de/en/products/detail/7319/jbl-proflora-direct

I could probably retrofit something - I use quite large diameter tubing, but I could make a section to fit. Lots of fettling to come!!

I don't think it is a good idea to setup CO2 using a separate regulator and solenoid connected by an airline tube. Even Pectec tried doing it in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5evnJdvnLp0pJo) and if you watch around minute 11, you will see the tube explodes on him. Later in the video you will see him try even more rigid tubing and that too begins to bulge and leak. I would recommend a regulator that has the solenoid built in. This is what Pectec ends up going with in a followup video and is what I use too.

Good to hear, Sometime back I used a little device which I purchased from a boot sale very cheap, you simply fill the bottle with yeast and baking soda(I think not sure know) sitting outside the tank which produced the CO2 and then you connect an airline to the bottle that sent the CO2 to a kind of plastic bubble maze which was stuck onto the glass inside the tank which produced bubbles after a few days, I did not have the tank for long had to move house so cannot say if it was working or not I cannot see them in aquatics shops but only cost £3 to setup with yeast and soda. At the moment I just use Flourish Excel Although if it is easier using this not sure if it is cost effective in the long run.
