A time-lapse art video of me wood burning a picture of a monarch butterfly. I also added colour to the burning with water colour pencils.
The burner I use is a Razertip SS-D10:

The music in this video is from Epidemic Sound.

Sometimes it's very easy to forget that you're actually wood-burning instead of just colouring things in black, your lines are always so smooth. Loved the colour on the flower petals especially, very nice contrasts!

Please suggest me a good,reliable but cheap wood burner to get started.

Hi, KZbin automatically put your comment in “spam” for some reason so I just found it. Thank you so much for the compliment, I’m glad you are feeling inspired to start burning. If you want a cheap burner to get started I know the walnut hollow creative versa tool is one that a lot of people like. It’s affordable and reliable, and good for beginners though lots of experienced burners use it too. It’a bigger than the one I have and a bit more awkward to hold, but I started with one just like it (but without a temperature control lol) and from what I’ve seen it seems like if you want a burner with the smaller pens all the good ones are pretty pricey. Hope this helps :)

Thank you :) Basswood is the easiest wood to burn on. For the tool, it depends on your price range. I use a Razertip SS-D10, but you can do great work with less expensive machines too. The walnut hollow versa tool is fairly popular, and a lot of people like Colwood burners too.

Thank you :) I think the water colour would be ok under epoxy but I haven’t personally tried it. Maybe do a small burned shape with some watercolour on a scrap piece of wood and try the epoxy before you coat a finished piece.

Looks good! I have a problem of the paint bleeding into the wood grain. Does the wood need to be smoother.

Yes, I find having the wood smoother helps with that. Also, less water can help and deeper burned lines but only when that makes sense for the piece

I have a question, I just got a woodburning pen and after a hour or so of using it started to burn my hand and even the heat proof grip burned me. Are you supposed to use any woodburning pen for certain amounts of time before it's not safe? And by the way very good job on the butterfly.

@WildwoodStudio

What sort of burner are you using? if its one like mine, some of the pens sometimes start to burn my hand, but usually I just have it up too high and if I turn it down a bit it will stop. I was just burning for over 2 hours though and I didn't have a problem. If it's a different brand, I've seen some odd things happen to other people where the plastic actually melts, so I'd maybe be worried about that, but if its a big brand like Colwood or Razertip you're probably fine? (unless its broken) If it's one of the larger pens, like the Walnut Hollow creative versa tool, I've never had one of those burn me, though it can get a bit hot. Maybe look up the brand you have to see if it's defective? or contact their customer service if it was an expensive one and it's over heating a lot. Otherwise, if it's not too bad, you can try just turning it down or wearing gloves. Generally I think it should be safe to burn for longer than an hour if the tool is working properly.

Are the colouring pencils a certain brand, or will any old colouring pencil do the job as good?
@WildwoodStudio
@WildwoodStudio 3 жыл бұрын
For this one, I was using a set of Derwent water colour pencils. I’ve used regular coloured pencils to add colour to other burnings though. For that, a lot of people prefer prismacolour pencils, but I have a big case full of all different brands of coloured pencils that I use, and it turns out fine :) I think, like with any art supply, that the “artist quality” coloured pencils (like prismacolour) will be a bit easier to use, but that you can still achieve high quality results with any decent brand 🙂
