Hello, I just bought two mystery snails today and I was wondering how often I should feed them? They are in quarantine right now before I put them in my tank which currently houses two nerite and a betta. Thank you
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly5 жыл бұрын
I've never fed the snails specifically. They'll eat any leftover food, including vegetation and algae. Just put an algae wafer in every day or two. If the tanks starts getting messy, then cut back a bit.

Why do you add Egg Shells to the tank. Came here to find out why as the title states and was hoping for a reason :-( Is it for the water parameters. Do the snails eat it. Is it to fix the cracked White snail shell. Soooo many questions.

I usually used crushed coral. I'd add a cup of crushed coral to stablize it. If you want the water nice and hard, use the crused coral as substrate.

this raises the ph correct? i have many soft water type fish and i’d really hate to let it go up. also, do i need to boil the shells? i’m not sure if i should drop a shell in or grind them up but i’ll just have to see.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly2 жыл бұрын
It will raise your pH, but you need a lot of it to significantly shift your pH. I'd bake the shells for about an hour at 200 degrees F. This will destroy the proteins in the membrane and put less waste in your tank.
@SamJammy Жыл бұрын
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I heard you could boil it in vinegar water and peel the inner-membrane off to do the same. is this correct? I've got 2 mystery snails and their shells are really suffering so I'm just here to ask questions and learn. One of them won't stop bobbing/floating (i've done air baths and he still does it. I'm convinced it's a combo of he likes being up there and he keeps getting air bubbles...he climbs plants and jumps off of them and then I will find him sticking to the sides of the tank for a day before doing it again for a day or two.) I have finally increased the pH to healthy level, but have yet to add calcium. we added a tiny bit of eggshell and nothing happened, but I don't believe we did it correctly that time.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Жыл бұрын
@@SamJammy I'm not sure about boiling in vinegar. I just bake the shells at 220 degrees foe 1/2 an hour. It'll take a good amount of eggshells to add a significant amount of calcium, and it'll take a while for the snails to show signs of improvement. You can put a cuttle bone in the tank too. The snails will grave directly from it.

My SAE IS Wild. He makes a mess of the substrate by digging into it and pushing it around. He kept smashing my largest snail into the glass so I had to move the snail to a different tank. I took him in from a neighbor that was moving and couldn’t keep him. He needs to be in a larger tank but I live in an apartment and don’t have room. Hoping to find a new home for him.

I grind up small but not a powder and noticed the mystery snail eats the finely ground egg shell, is that ok? Its been a day and he seems ok. If he is eating it, how often should I put in and how much per gal. would you estimate?? Thank you!
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly4 жыл бұрын
If it's eating it, it probably needs the calcium and sulphur so let it have it. I really don't know a specific amount to put in.
@tic8574 жыл бұрын
My ramshorn will gobble up the finer powder and will have white waste later, then dine on that again. They seem attracted to it and they are fine with it so your snails should be fine. If in the wild they would be rasping on calcium rich items anyway. I personally think their shells heal up a bit faster if they can ingest it.

I have a single Siamese algae eater (genuine) I love watching it but it recently started chasing and pushing the pearl gouramis. This behaviour got worse so I moved him in with large female Plecos and guppys. He isn't bothering either. Could it be that it needs a group? I don't usually keep single fish but it was the only one there at the time. Are all yours in groups?

I'm not sure if they need a group or not. I have two, and they interact constantly, so you may be onto something.

Dan Hiteshew I'm pretty sure they need more than one. I think I heard 3 being said at least. But I have two and they leave other fish alone for the most part. They might chase each other but other fish are left alone

Does it effect the ph? I cant find anything on this
@rocki_bb5 жыл бұрын
It can effect kh, which can effect pH in acidic environments. It can effect the amount of dissolved CO2 as well, but not in an overall negative way. I'll illustrate how I learned this the hard way through my own stupidity recently. I was doing some work on a DIY, low budget way to get some CO2 in to some plants. I accidentally released a HUGE burst of CO2 into my tank. I could see it almost instantly stress my fish, so I did a bit of an emergency water change. But I didn't change enough, because less than a week later I look for my snails in the tank. One was hiding at the waterline. The other was dead with multiple holes in a shell that had become thin & brittle from the now acidic water. If I had had a source of calcium in the tank it would have helped stabilize the sudden change in dissolved CO2 and shift in pH. And I'm still kicking myself over that poor snail. I've had enough organic chemistry to know I should have been closely monitoring the water parameters and adding a pH raiser. Sorry for the novel. I hope I answered your question
