While I've only been at snail breeding for a couple of months, I've had zero success with incubation. Leaving the eggsacks on the tank wall has been reasonably successful, however, so my first breeding pair has yielded over 600 healthy babies so far :) A lot of the eggsacks still don't end up hatching, but clearly an abundance of them do, enough to call it a success. Got some more snails now that I've had for a couple of weeks and they are finally just starting to mate!

How often can i feed them (babies & adults) I leave the clutch on the side of the fish tanks but sometimes it falls into the water, would the baby still survive? Or do i need to take it out the water when it falls
@Lifewithpets722 жыл бұрын
They should be fed daily. If a clutch falls into the water it will not survive.
@sststr Жыл бұрын
Whenever I find an eggsack in the water and I don't know how long it's been there, I gently break it apart. Sometimes the eggsack has had enough time to develop that some of the babies will actually survive. I've had some times where none did, sometimes just a dozen, but I had one case where I still got a good 60+ baby snails out of an eggsack that had fallen into the water. So don't just pick the eggsack out of the water and throw it away, break it apart in the tank and maybe you'll get lucky. Then I leave the broken up eggsack in the tank, regardless of success or failure, in case anybody in the tank wants to feed on the egg shells. After a day or two I'll gravel vac out whatever is left, but good to let it be for a little while. That also gives any survivors plenty of time to move along so you don't vacuum them up when you are ready to clean it out. Sometimes I am the one who knocks the eggsack off the tank wall, like when doing some gravel vac in the tank, and if it has only been in the water a few seconds, go ahead and scoop it out immediately and incubate it. Worth a shot, at least.

Loved the video.Very informative for an 8 minute video. Just 2 things tho. 1) What do you feed them. 2) I crush into powder,cuttlebone and put 2 pinches into my 55 gallon tank every other day.Amounts to about a quarter teaspoon. And,I have cuttle bone fragments strewn about on the substrate. Do you suggest more crushed cuttle bone,less,or everyday or less frequent. And since Im new at keeping an aquarium,Id appreciate input from anyone who is experienced in these cool critters. Oh..I have 4 snails at this point in time.
@Lifewithpets724 жыл бұрын
Ideally they need a diet high in calcium. The cuttlebone in the tank will help but they need calcium in their food too. We feed Repashy gel food with added calcium and calcium chips (available on our website) we also feed green beans and occasionally algae wafers.

No, mystery snails are not hermaphrodits. But if you happened to get a female that was already pregnant then you could end up with babies. If the clutches have not hatched after a month they’re not likely to.

Thanks! I've been considering buying some mystery snails, fully grown, maybe a pack of three, to breed and sell. Would a Ten Gallon be enough to hold them? I know it'll be overstocked but I can clean it like twice a week half way. I've noticed people seem to like magenta mystery snails so I wanted to give it a shot, not sure what to do if no one buys though..
@Lifewithpets72 Жыл бұрын
When choosing to breed you need to be sure you will be able to sell them. They breed quickly and it’s easy to become over run. A 10 gallon tank is not big enough for breeding and grow out. I’d recommend a minimum 20 gallon tank.
@lav66435 жыл бұрын
I know this video is an older one, holding on hope you see this message 😁. Newish hobbiest here; I hatched out 2 clutches recently and all the babies died within 28 days, while the adults are still alive and thriving! Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20ppm, ph 7.5. I have a bag of crushed coral as well as a cuttlebone in the tank. I feed snello with added calcium, repashy soilent green and fresh produce (green beans, broccoli & zucchini). Any ideas as to why the babies may have all died? Is there something I'm missing? Something I didn't do? (I do once a week water changes. do the babies not handle water changes that well?) I really want to be successful next clutch so any tips you may have are truly appreciated. Ty.

Ivory is a recessive trait, so the most reliable way to breed ivories is to start with ivories. Where to get ivories is always a challenge - I got lucky recently and one of my nearby pet stores had four of them in stock! Just keep checking your local aquarium source every week or two. Maybe even let them know you are looking for ivories so they can check with their own suppliers about getting some in for you. Or, just order some online. The cost of shipping will be very expensive, but it is an easy way to get some if you can afford it.

My snails tanks are currently running at 76f. We feed a high calcium diet. We have details and the food for sale on our website. Link in the description box.
@sststr Жыл бұрын
Keeping a high pH is something I struggle with too - API pH Up will raise the level quickly, but gets expensive as a way to keep it up as you'd have to test the pH and add some chemical every day. What does seem to work nicely is adding a little bit of crushed coral or limestone, ideally you would put that down in the bottom of the tank before you add your main substrate, since coral can be sharp and that's not good for the snails' feet.
