The TIE PIN, i.e. a pearl, a stone or a piece of jewellery mounted on a pin, worn on your tie, is quite elegant without being too obtrusive. It shows how just a little effort can have quite an impact. You must however take a 'bulldog' clip to go with it, or you might lose it. In my family all male members wear them, hence I am used to them. As they have fallen a bit by the wayside they are quite easy to get hold of.

Hi Adrian, you are very correct in your statement that they do add a level of what appears to be effortless elegance and whilst they have fallen a little out of favour of the years they are still great to use. It's great to hear that in your family all male members still wear them, great tip about the bulldog clip and very effective in preventing losing it, personally I have never used any thing and never lost mine historically, although when I used to use one when wearing a cravat i have come close a few times. They are now as you say quite easy to get hold of, although a lot of jeweller break them down for there materials and reuse them, using the stones or gold for other purposes, which is a real shame. Thank you your comments and continued support dear friend. 👍🙂

I really enjoyed this video Chris. Accessories do make a difference so long as they're kept to a minimum. I always wear a very small boutonier on my lapel to add that little personal touch to an otherwise standard jacket. I was fortunate enough to inherit a collection of beautiful cufflinks from a friend of the family who passed away recently. This good fortune forced me to invest in double-cuffed shirts. I love wearing them on special occasions and shall treasure my cufflinks into the future.

Hi Billy, glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. I'm personally not a lover of artificial Boutonnieres, much prefer to see real ones being used. But I understand why people use them, the complication is then whether to wear a pocket square or not with it as it can become to busy as a look. With a Boutonniere a very simple square fold plain white pocket square would go best to maintain the timeless elegant look. I love French cuff (double cuff) shirts and I even inspired myself to go and buy some Edwardian Rose Gold Cufflinks again, having sold my old ones many years ago. Thanks for your lovely comments and support👍🙂

I thought that I invented sleeve garters using office rubber bands. After watching your video, and learning the correct name, I learned that they go back to the days of Pinky Blinders or earlier. Went to Amazon and ordered some legitimate bands. Thanks for the tip.

Chris, thank you for such a lovely video (and a very pleasant surprise!) in response to something that I thought might be of interest to likeminded others. All of my enamelled vintage cufflinks have been purchased (at little cost) with a particular outfit colour theme in mind according to my different suits, blazers and sports jackets. I also have a whole box of modern silk knot cufflinks. Such accessories are my added fun factor to dressing well. The recent loss of both of my parents brought my own mortality into sharp focus, and with that, the importance of their memory and that of wider family members and dear friends who are no longer with us. We all have little mementos that we pick up during a lifetime. Those that don't get thrown away, usually end up forgotten in a drawer until rediscovered during a house move. I have my grandfather's 1908 dated silver shirt stud box, engraved with his initials. My father used it, adding to my grandfather's existing cufflinks and studs. Now it is in my possession where it and its contents has taken on a whole new significance. It is the same with wristwatches. In addition to my grandfather's 1968 gold watch and my father's of 1972, are all of my milestone wrist watches, plus two pocket watches, stretching back to my very first one given as a Christmas present in 1965. Having got most of them repaired / restored, I now wear them once more with the pride of legacy. Last year, I purchased a Smiths A358 black dial, gold-plated, dress watch as a birth year watch. Engraved on the back with the name and date of it's newly retired first owner, nearly 70 years ago, but long since desperately unloved, it cost me just over £100. A highly recommended Smiths watch specialist sympathetically restored it in detail back to its former glory. None of my watches are expensive makes; all are valued at less than £500, most a good deal less, but they are all different in style, and each one is of significance to me personally. Yes, all watches cost good money to properly repair and service but this is dwarfed by the pleasure they bring putting them back into everyday use as part of my re-awakened upgraded dress code. I can think of no better way to define the `Looking good and feeling great!' mantra of this channel.😊

Hi John, glad you enjoyed the video, I totally agree with you, I love wearing French cuff shirts and that means wearing cufflinks. Enamels are very effective and give an added level of detail. They are great for adding a little bit of your personality to an ensemble, a little bit of your charisma, if you like. Vintage cufflinks are great, they are relatively cheap and very effective in enhancing a particular look, depending. Personally, I prefer not using modern knot cufflinks, I find them quite fiddly, but you are absolutely correct, accessories do add the fun factor to dressing well. Yes, I am very sorry to hear about your parents, memories of loved ones is important and to also share those memories is special as well. Keeping and using those items associated with our departed loved ones, is without doubt a way of celebrating the departed and remembering them. Wrist and pocket watches are significant pieces of a person’s life and history and something that is instantly identifiable to them, it’s personable. Using an item that is passed onto us, is a way of keeping their memory alive. In some ways it is not the monetary value of watches that is important, it is more about the memories linked to them, or of the significance of why we bought them that is important. Smiths is a well established company renowned for its instrumentation and precision, not only in watches but also in speedometer and other gauges. Just over £100 sounds like a fantastic service and I can see why you would be revitalised by wearing them - hence ‘looking good and feeling great!’ I’m very pleased you enjoyed the content of the video and thank you for your continued support for the channel, it means a lot, dear friend. 👍🙂

Another corker Chris! Less is definitely more isn't it? I usually stick to a watch, a pocket square if I'm feeling really flash, a tie slide (and my wedding ring, of course!)! I rarely wear french cuffs because I wear a suit for work, I like to leave somewhere to go when I do want to step it up, ditto a waistcoat! I was fortunate to be given a beautiful pair of Aspinall Lapis Lazuli cufflinks for Christmas a couple of years ago, I only really wear those, I think of them as a signature piece, even though most people probably don't even notice them! Ah well! Keep the great content coming!

Hi Yoric, glad you enjoyed the video and agree with it's content, French cuff shirts are great for adding a touch of elegance to an ensemble and less is definitely more and you appear to have got the balance just right. Lapis Lazuli is a lovely stone and the colour if really lovely, I completely understand why you wear them so often and they are a great signature piece for sure, generating compliments when worn. Thanks for your comments and continued support👍🙂

Chris. Great video love the content. A very interesting subject indeed. I have quite a few cufflinks mostly from my father and one pair of my grandfather. I started wearing them more after a trip to the UK and saw a nicely dressed English man in a tweed jacket and wearing cufflinks. After that I purchased a few more French cuff shirts. I do wear my grandfather's pocket watch when I wear a waistcoat but not as often as I used to. I don't wear Tie clips and pins very much and I gave up on tie pins as they tend to damage the tie. I recently limited my lapel pins to just one. Looks much smarter. Best regards Ron

BD,are you aware of any etiquette involving the type of black tie event a man would or wouldn’t wear his studs&cufflinks with his dinner shirt/suit? I’ve been to a few black tie events and then to a few black tie dinners parties and In both cases I’ve seen men with or without said accessories. My instinct tells me that at formal events ( fundraisers/awards/ galas) one would wear his studs&cufflinks and then for black tie parties/dinners a man could simply wear his dinner suit and bow tie but without a proper dinner shirt and accessories (still a white shirt of course). Do you know anything about that?
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 7 ай бұрын
Hi there, here's my view on this subject. The etiquette surrounding studs and cufflinks in black tie events can vary slightly based on personal preferences and regional customs, but there are generally accepted norms to consider. Here's a guideline that you can use to answer the question: In traditional black tie events, such as fundraisers, awards ceremonies, formal dinners with clubs or other intuitions and galas, it is customary for men to wear studs and cufflinks with their dinner shirts. This creates a polished and formal look that aligns with the dress code of these events. The studs and cufflinks add a touch of sophistication and complete the ensemble, enhancing the overall formal appearance. On the other hand, for black-tie dinner parties or more casual black-tie events, the dress code may be slightly less strict. In these situations, men may have more flexibility in their choice of attire. While a traditional black-tie dinner suit and bow tie are still expected, some individuals may opt for a standard white shirt without studs and cufflinks for a more relaxed feel. It's essential to consider the specific guidelines provided for each event, as expectations may vary. If in doubt, you can always check the invitation or consult the event organiser for clarification on the dress code. Ultimately, the key is to strike a balance between adhering to the formality of the occasion and adapting to the specific atmosphere of the event. To be honest in this day and age most people wouldn't know what to look for in most less formal events if you wore a dinner suit - so you are on a winner in the first place 🙂 great question and glad you enjoyed the video🙂👍

A similar question occurs about the watch. I read that some interpretations of etiquette state a man should not wear a watch with black tie, especially at formal dinners, because of its implication that the wearer has to be somewhere else or is not focused on the occasion. That attitude is likely very Old School, but I have read it in multiple references and the Gentlemen’s Gazette.

Good question. The (black stippled) shirt studs and matching cufflinks shown in the video date back to the 1950s and earlier, at a time when the rules of formality were far more rigid than today. I wear them with a period early 1950s double breasted dinner suit. Dress shirt studs are worn far less today, but you can still buy them. Victorian and Edwardian ones are usually very decorative, and can be equally expensive if precious metals and gems were used.
