Adding FLESH SPIDERS and LITTLE FRIENDS to my Indie Game (and other stuff too) - Devlog #12

(ARACHNOPHOBIA WARNING) In this #devlog I show my process of creating horrible spiders made of rotting flesh, new types of enemies, cute little friends, and 2 new levels. This goes from the concept art stage (quick sketches) to the fully fleshed out game mechanics and objects that are completely playable.
I also put a lot of emphasis on polish and game feel!
I use Unity, Playmaker, and Blender 3D to make my indie game, called Toby's Topsy Tale which was funded on Kickstarter. It is a psychological horror 3D platformer with Lovecraftian elements (which means inspired in part by the works of H.P. Lovecraft). These dev logs are meant to serve as a way for me to track progression as I work towards my dream of being a solo indie game dev. Game design is hard but it's easier with such a great community!
This is hopefully of interest to people who play games as well as those actively pursuing their indie game dev journey and those who have an interest in someday learning how to make games!

Looking around the level aimlessly while trying to find the buttons, especially when they could be on the ground or in the trees, seems like it could be a bit of a chore given that the level is so big and open. But man I love the aesthetic of the Grandmas picnic level, it looks fantastic.

In addition to the skins for tobeys body you could also add skins for tobeys sugarcane like a needle skin for the grandma level and a fork skin like this from the demons for the oven level - further down the line you could add abilities, traits or something like that to this skins so the player needs to choose what he picks. Some ideas for a system like this would be: - Umbrella = extents the gliding ability and can be used for better defense, but lags damage - Needle = great attackspeed, narrow attacks (thrusts), little less damage - Fork = great damage, less attackspeed - Birthday candle = fire damage, emits light , less physical damage - Thorne branch = damage over time, chance to hurt yourself - Pencil = idk - Fairy wand = has a chance to convert an enemy to fight a little amount of time for you, less damage - Icicle = slows enemies down, not effective in certain areas or against certain enemy types (oven enemies)

I think it'd be a nice touch if the waterfall was actually a thread being pulled off of the fabric. Kinda like it's unraveling at the end.

May I suggest that if you’re going to give the coins different textures in different worlds, maybe for the refrigerator levels the coins could have a tinfoil texture so that they look like those chocolate coins wrapped in gold tinfoil. And for the oven level, the coins can be ether misshaped to look like they are melted, or just add burn marks to them.

Perhaps you could find some sort of way to vary the tree prefabs, maybe the position of the branches or just the rotation of them. Although that may be very complex. From one game developer to another, your game is looking fantastic so far, can’t wait to play it when it comes out!

Everything in this is looking great ! I love the spider fresh and the atmosphere in the grandma's room. I'm curious , would you add a grandma monster (Or whatever she's gonna be) in the level?

I think the game is really good but I think it will be better to use 3d models for grass And rocks in the first level

make it so that fabric skin is automatic but if you unlock it you get to use it elsewhere

Great video! I know you probably gave the spider 4 legs because its less work to animate, but it just looks so wrong without 6, I cant really explain why.

I hate being "that guy", but you meant 8, right? Spiders have 8 legs, but I'm guessing that this is supposed to fit into the stylized category... regardless of the number of legs, I would agree with the assessment.

Grandma's level look good but feels empty and also mechanicaly unsatisfying. Just jumping on the trees doesn't feel enough for the 3D platformer.
