Great video, John. I'm planning on purchasing the Celestron 1100 Edge HD with the new CGX mount in the next few months so I really like this. I didn't think you could use the DSLR in the front, though. I thought it would block too much light. I thought I would only be able to use my Nikon D810 or D300 at the rear in the prime focus area. Do you have any shots taken with your DSLR attached to the Hyperstar? If so, I would love to see them.

I have a EdgeHD 9.25 and it’s a perfect compromise between the 8 and the 11 inch models. I however only want to do visual and replace the my mount with as minimal setup as possible. I have been looking at the IOptron Alt pro mount with a payload capacity of 33lb. This scope with all the accessories would get to about 29-30lb. Do you think I can get away with that load being so close to the max. I understand when you start going more than 8in you’re kind of forced to go with a Equatorial type mount, but I’m hoping this could work. If I had to go with a small EQ mount which mount would you feel is able to handle this as well give me better portability.
@countermine335 жыл бұрын
Markinpuff I have owned the 8" and the 11" - wish I had kept the 8" for portability... but I like my setup... I did some research on that mount. For visual work, it should be fine - just make sure the balance is spot on... the motors on the mount just have to overcome the inertia of the weight. You can verify with the iOptron team if you are not sure... but I have seen that mount in person at NEAF and it should be ok... anytime you are pushing the payload balance becomes more critical.

I noticed you are removing the secondary with the Bobs Knobs. Has this caused any problems in having to collimate your mirror down the road? I talked to Starizona today and they said they don't recommend them, but I like them so much and just got my Bobs Knobs in the mail today for my new 1100 EdgeHD and was going to install them tonight.

I have the v3 hyperstar and I have used it with the Atik 490EX - I also have used it with the zwo asi 294 and 1600 MM - I have taken some amazing pictures with Hyperstar - focus is critical at fast f ratios - I used a motorized focuser controlled by ASCOM - and you can get some odd light vignettes - but flats will help with those - and make sure you don't have light leaks on the back of the scope - I lost several sessions of data due to light leaks on the back of the scope

I have an old CPC-8 with no wedge. I read that hyperstar can work with Alt/Az only. True? If I could simply defork the 8 tube, I could put it on an eq mount, but it's not mostly possible. I had to let out my hyperstar breath when I decided it wouldn't work.
@countermine334 жыл бұрын
Paul - I'll try to keep the reply short. Hyperstar only allows for astrophotography as it replaces the secondary mirror and as such, it works with any mount... however, German Equatorial allow for noise reduction and other options that are not available on an alt/az setup as the GEM does not have the field rotation limitations of the alt/az. If you can upgrade to a GEM, go for it... many options under $1,000 that will open up the potential of the hyperstar on that OTA.

How do you route power and signal lines to your computer ?
@countermine333 жыл бұрын
After putting on the Hyperstar - I put on a dew shield - I route power and USB down the side of the scope to a hub on the mount. I rotate the cables 90 degrees to create diffraction spikes. I use a drop of olive oil on the threads so they don't stick. It's rare that I take the Hyperstar off the scope so cross threading is not a huge issue or concern

what is the advantage of Hyperstar VS adding CANON DLSR instead of the eyepiece ? I would like to use canon 5D with my 14 inch Celestron HD. what do I need to get and is there any disadvantage ? thanks Mokhtar
@countermine336 жыл бұрын
Mokhtar Ziarati if you use the telescope in prime it’s a narrower field of view and f10 - using your canon on the back for example. If you use hyperstar you get wider field and very fast f/2 focal ratio. Making the sample object much faster to shoot with hyperstar. I believe it’s comparable to a 30” exposure at f/2 is a 200” exposure at f/ten. Less issue with guide errors and many more images to stack - generating less noise in the overall image. The disadvantages are focus is more critical. And a dslr will block some of the optics. On the 11 and 14 inch scopes. Not a big deal. The other issues is filter wheels are easier to add to the back. Hyperstar has a filter holder - just a bit more work.
@mokhtarziarati68466 жыл бұрын
Hello John Thanks so much for your detail information. how does hyperstar camera gets power? is it using battery? it is nice to be able take photo and video while observing through the eyepiece. is there a possibility of zoom available with either one of the option. looking at the planes they are very small in the option with DSLR camera. how do you zoom or magnifying the planets. thanks mokhtar
@countermine336 жыл бұрын
Depends on the camera - I have a Sony that runs on an internal battery and internal memory card - controlled by a wifi app - and Atik 490EX that uses an external 12v source and USB to a computer - and an ZWO camera that uses external power and USB... so it is variable based on the camera. With Hyperstar, you do not have the option of visually viewing while using it... the secondary mirror - which would bounce photons back to an eyepiece is replaced by the Hyperstar/Camera sensor. You are also unable to zoom... Hyperstar is designed for wide field and fast imaging. To zoom with the Schmidt-Cassegrain you have to remove the hyperstar, put back the secondary mirror and shoot as a prime focus setup - and that slows down imaging to f/10 - but then you can use the benefit of the longer focal length and barlow lenses for close up work.

Hi, is the hyperstar support the 0.7x focal reducer?
@countermine334 жыл бұрын
The 0.7x focal reducer goes on the back of the scope and reduces from f10 to f7 - the hyperstar mounts on the front - replacing the secondary mirror and acts as a focal reducer - it's two different setups and use cases - I keep my .7 mounted on the back when I switch to planetary or need longer focal lengths. Hyperstar goes on for fast focal ratios and wider field imaging.
