a 21 year old insomniac and his obsession over Mario Kart items- in it's full 31 minute glory.
Mario Kart items tend to get the short end of the stick on KZbin. everyone is so worried about characters, or courses but they always leave the crucial element that makes or breaks a Mario Kart entry- the items. but nobody focuses on them, not to the degree that I do, in this video, at least.
with 32 items, there's bound to be at least one item that resonates with you, as a Mario Kart racer. i attempted to have a item roster that's somewhere in between the chaos of Mario Kart Wii and the white picket fence roster of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with some fan favorites returning to the complex family that is Mario Kart!

What item did you end up liking? Disliking? Outright hate? Easy choice is the change of invincibility for the boo item specifically the lack of invincibility that you get.

a quick idea- rock mushroom makes you invulnerable to getting spun off or hit by items for 10 seconds you can still get squashed or hit by certain things though, so like a worse star

There are some solid ideas, but I think there are too many items here given how complicated and convoluted alot of these are (especially the boo, mechakoopa and flashing shell) and would be practically impossible to keep track of for newer players. Also, I think it'd be funny if the giant banana and bowser shells would turn into a normal banana and green shell when lightning strikes, since shrinking stuff is what the lightning is known for.

yeah that's fair, the item roster is a tad bit more fuller, but i do believe each item finds it's own niche in the game. as for the items being too convoluted, i can see that with the flashing shell, but i'm not sure if i see that with the other items. but there's really no telling how intuitive it will or will not be without playtesting it, which is something both me and you can't do unfortunately. as for the giant banana and bowser shell lightning gag- i actually really like this little joke mechanic, but it would muddle the core theme of the Lightning Bolt being a "cleanser" of all items. i designed the Lightning Bolt to not only punish players by shrinking everyone, but also benefit them by giving players a item-free racetrack to drive on, making the Lightning Bolt both a negative and a beneficial item, no matter what position you're in while still keeping the core function of the Lightning Bolt. thanks for watching!

​@@greztrez2366from my anecdotal experience most of the people who I've seen play mario kart (kids) don't even know you can hold items behind you, so I don't think they would understand half of these items.

I feel like most Mario Kart items can be looked at as a single concept. That way they're simple to understand, they fulfill their purpose and nothing else, and they're unlikely to become broken. As fun as your ideas are, a lot of them don't really fit that criteria. They seem to have many functions without a clear primary function, and features that used to be mostly universal (like item dragging/circling) become something that has to be memorized for each item.

when lightning strikes a mecha koopa, it should overcharge and give an explosion equivalent to a blue shell when hitting a player.. with the added effects

Amazing list! I love all of these ideas here. Also tbh the blue shell could probably get away with still having wings but having the gameplay from mario kart 8, it just hovers close to the ground. It floats anyways before striking its victim in MK8 so I think it works! Youre interpretation of the pow block is really interesting too, I like the concept of any item being able to be on the track. Also I love the mecha koopa so much its so evil

thanks! this might be personal preference, but i think the Blue Shell without wings looks more badass- a silent killer. i used to think the wings were cool until i saw the shell without them. never going back. as for the POW block, yeah i essentially "fused" the POW block and Super Horn items, slightly buffing it as it now has 3 uses, (but with the amount of stuff 1st place has to deal with in this game, i think it's a fair counter to every other racer's items- remember, it can break EVERY ITEM, it's just hard to get the timing right.)

I have only one thing to say: I really like the spiny shell having wings. It kind of feels more bland without them. What I would personally do is have it fly, but have it fly close to the ground, such that it still barrels through people as you said, and as a bonus the animation for it can involve it tilting and pitching and careening in a visually wild and threatening and yet nonetheless fittingly cartoony fashion as it demolishes all that lie directly ahead of it.

Something I've always thought would be interesting would be a mini mushroom (since mega has existed). It would make the user shrink down, but speed them up immensely (fastest out of everything), though the user can't use any mushrooms. It would end after about 10 seconds, or getting hit/squished.

2 things. First the coin should boost speed for the first 10 and then boost turbo the next 10. Every 5 coins is a one second recovery penalty. Secondly the sparkling shell would be sparkly gold would automatically circle the player for 10 seconds once pulled. While held gives infinite purple turbo and you get 20 coins. You can pass it forward or backwards it would track like a blue shell to the player and the timer would reset, the person in first could only hold it for 3 seconds and can only pass it backwards. At 3 sec it stops in front of the player at 2 sec the wings go in the shell and at 1 sec it starts to drop, then it explodes after that everyone that was not hit by the explosion would get a 12 sec purple turbo. If hit at any time while holding it automatically explodes.

Thanks KZbin for not notifying me of this video 11 months ago. Almost a year later though, I’ve got some pretty rad concepts for new/ significantly changed Mario Kart items: - Drill Mushroom Straight from Wonder, this will cause the user to submerge into the ground for 5 seconds at a time and make them avoid item hits including Lightning. Can be used three times like the Boomerang. (Fun Fact: the original concept for MK8 would’ve had racers go underground but they couldn’t figure out a good way to do it.) - Wonder Flower Also straight from Wonder, this will act like the Skyway from F-Zero 99 and allow users to auto-accelerate but still steer left and right on the new formed magic roadway unlike the future iteration of the Bullet Bill. Also makes users invulnerable to Lightning. - Special Crown A mix between Double Dash’s Special Items and the All-Star moves from the Sonic All-Stars Racing games, this is character specific and will grant each character a super-sized/ powered variant of a standard item based on weight class and species (Mario Bros. = DD Spreaded Fireballs, Kongs = Giant Banana, Koopas = Bowser Shell, Dinos = Egg, Wario/ Waluigi = Double Bombs, Princesses = Heart etc.) - Super-Ball Flower 8 balls shot can take up to 10 bounces before disappearing, can also run into and collect coins for the user like in Mario Land. Balls cannot be destroyed by other projectiles/ items other than the Star and Bullet Bill. - Blooper (modified) Just inks tires to makes steering slippery instead of smearing the screen. Ink is released by the Blooper squirting oil spills on track from the back of the vehicle. - Fuzzy When touched, it’ll make the user’s screen turn into kaleidoscopic/ wavy/ trippy patterns for 5-7 seconds. - Lightning (majorly modified) When recipients are not in water, the Lightning will only zap items held by hem and leave racers unharmed, when in water however the Lightning will act like it’s always had to them. Also overlays the 64/ DD Lightning theme jungle when shrunken down over the course OST instead of making it horribly shrill. - Coin (modified) Gives user 5 coins instead of just 2 and gives them a significant speed increase.

“I really like the concept for the lightning cloud.” After all the changes you made to preexisting items, that isn’t very surprising. Also, Mr. I seems… kinda useless. Yeah, you can see everyone’s items and theoretically strategize, but that’s kinda cancelled out by something… how are you supposed to strategize when items are randomized? Like… “oh, that guy behind me has a red shell! Now I should *hope* I get an item to stop it!”

I have a tweak: Triple Shroom orbits. HOWEVER! it doesn't block items, and other players can snag one of them from you by bumping into you while you still have more than one mushroom left. Once you've used two of the mushrooms from a triple shroom, it transmutes into a normal shroom. This differentiates the solo and triple shrooms enough to make boost-spamming versus smuggling a risk-reward tradeoff. [EDIT]: The Flashing Shell is a bit TOO powerful. Tone it down a bit. Like, say, only applying the star effect. Though that would probably be a bit too weak in your eyes, so how about the following replacement idea: For the player that activates it in the first place, it works as you described, where they max out their coin counter and get the power buff of a star automatically, and a Blue Shell when the flashing shell's timer expires. In addition, whoever gets the shell and holds onto it until it expires receives a POW block item, and if a POW block is already in play, then it gets refreshed back to full uses. This incentivizes people to coordinate based on what everyone knows, and to not get too greedy thanks to knowing that there's now a POW block in play, and multiple if someone was holding onto one when the shell expired. This is the ONLY way to have multiple POW blocks in play at a time, and it also ensures that there is no confusion about how many POW block uses are left. There will always be no more than five possible uses on the track at a given time. However, once the timer goes off and the shell turns into the final effect ends, everyone at least X distance units behind first place who is within Y distance units of another player gains a Bob-omb or a Mega Mushroom at random, while everyone else at least X distance units behind first place (but logically is also Y or more units away from any racer at all by that same token) gains a Bullet Bill or a mechakoopa at random. This happens no matter who has the shell when it expires. To make it fair for the first-place user, they get something out of the exchange as well. If the person who has the shell when the timer expires is front-running by a significant amount, then they get ten coins on their counter and an all-seeing eye. If, however, the person in first place is not frontrunning and gets the shell's power, then they and everyone else in proximity to them instead gain an all-seeing eye item. HOWEVER! There is one teensy-tiny little caveat to all of this: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN OPEN ITEM SLOT, THEN YOU GET NOTHING! Your excessive greed played yourself, and you missed out on the power item as a result. This incentivizes people to use their items when they hear the distinctive alert of a flashing shell, which thereby increases player-on-player interaction.

I think items like the mega mushroom and bowser shell should take on the properties they have in Mario Kart Tour. The homing mechanism of the bowser shell makes it like a weaker blue shell that punishes players less for being hit and is still possible to dodge if you're aware. The Mega Mushroom turned into a defensive weapon in tour where it's not a star with a coat of paint but rather a 1 size fits all defensive item where one hit by an item makes you lose it without any punishments and it deals spinouts to players if they hit them at a high enough velocity. I think some other items in tour you might find interesting so I suggest checking out how they changed them in that game compared to previous entries.

the idea of a bowser shell homing in on players sounds terrifying and really broken. imagine looking behind and seeing a bowser shell right on your tail. LOL

I got an idea for a joke item in mario kart. The triple blue shell. Fires all three shells at once and each shell with each shell acting like a normal blue shell only twice as fast. All I’m gonna say is the person in first place is gonna have a really bad day.

There's another kind of Koopa shell. Bombshell Koopas from Super Mario Land. Koopas with black shells that explode. Perhaps it would travel forward like a green shell, but explode on impact with anything. Like a bob-omb that requires precise aim instead of a overhead throw/stationary drop, but has much greater range as trade. 🤔

Nice Video👌🏻 While watching it I got an Idea for an in my opinion cool item. The item is the Dash Pepper from Super Mario Galaxy 2. It would give you insane speed slightly faster than a Bullet Bill but you are still in control of your movement, kinda. While in use you will only be able to drift everytime you steer. It will also leave behind a trail of fire which starts to disappear after 2 seconds. If driven into the trail you will start to spin (same as on a banana peel). The item should last 6 or 8 seconds but will end earlier if hit by an other item or if you drive into a wall. I would find it a great addition as it is an item that requires some sort of skill to get the most out of it.

yeah, there's no real way of knowing unless we playtested it, but with the 3 sec time boost it could be quite OP.

12:41 random item boxes that show up sometimes on shortcut paths can also be beneficial for a fake item box. Other players taking the shortcut will either A) take the item and help to close in on first place (if they're behind), or B) get faked out and be punished (if the shortcutting racer is a 1st placer)

Imagine a Mario Kart were coins can be exchanged for items, or even, a new mechanic were you could use coins for fusing items! Now coins not only allow you to reach max speed, but you could sacrifice your max speed (coins), and use them for items as an offensive and strategic mechanic. The price for a generic item is (×6) coins. The item you get will depend on your current position. For fusing items, the price is (×10) coins. The fun of the game is discovering all the crazy combinations of items. This are just ideas on top of my head, but, combining: *Banana + Bomb 🍌💣* - Banana Mine *Shell + Mushroom* 🍄🐢 - Shelly Mushroom: besides from giving you a boost, if you bump another player while boosting, they will instanly get hit. - Or a Giga Shell - or a very fast but normal shell *Banana + Mushroom* 🍌🍄 - Giga Banana - Bananashroom: when used, you will leave behind 5 bananas after boosting. *Mushroom + Star* 🍄⭐️ - Super Golden Mushroom: its the star power + a golden Mushroom. *Green Shell (×1) + Green Shells (×3)* 🐢🐢🐢 - Multi Shell: you can throw as many green shells but for only 5 seconds. *Blue Shell + (×3) Green shells* 🐢💸 - Mega Blue Shell: functions as a blue shell but it hits not only the 1st player, but also the 2nd and 3rd player. *Blue Shell + Thunder* 💸⚡️ - When used, while the blue shell moves towards the 1st player, if an opponent is hit by the blue shell, the opponent will shrunk, as well as the 1st player obviously. And so on!! What do you guys think? Obviously, the fusing mechanic should be balanced, not all items could be fused. I was thinking something like Mario Kart Fuse for the name.

The 1st time I ever saw the Blooper I thought it was going to drop oil over the track. So I think it might work better if it did that, make it affect a larger surface area as a hazard so it is difficult to avoid but unlike the banana and shells it can hurt multiple drivers but it only stays on the track for about 5 seconds. So it will not impact drivers who are lagging way behind, allowing them to even catch up a little. It could stop or slow down blue and red shells (this may make it OP but interesting to see if it works as a balance item).

I snagged a Golden Mushroom! Anyway, I really loved a lot of the concepts presented here! If I had to come up with a concept for an item in game, my pick would be the infamous Double Cherry, originally from Super Mario 3D World. The item would work much like it did in that game: it would create a clone of the racer, which will take the hit for you for items like banana peels and shells. More powerful items like the Blue Shell and Stat would still cause you to get hurt though.

7:13 Please, for the love of all that Shaggy Myamoto holds dear to his corporate, mushroomy heart, have it so that the lightning bolt only hits racers ahead of the user. There is nothing more infuriating than being in 12th with good items only for them to be pissed away by jose.gonzalez.2004 who just so happened to pick up a lightning bolt in 9th I swear to Iwata's omniscient spirit that's the only thing I want, I will ask for nothing else but this.

i believe to have all these items they will need to come out with a new console to be compatible to render the items and to make the courses roads more wider to see and maneuver through all dropped items a lil easier 🙏

I think a cappy item would be pretty cool, so here is my pitch. You could throw it once, and if it hits another racer, you could capture them. You won’t be able to control what they’re doing, but they will be able to see they’ve been captured. So it’s up to the other racer if they want to sabotage you (and themselves)by purposefully falling off the road, or if they want to help you out by trying their best. It could also be more beneficial if you capture your teammate if you play in teams. I feel like it would be very funny in multiplayer.

I agree with this. Only thing i dont prefer is the flashy shell. Really good concept but it is just broken. Its at least got to have 1 or 2 counters or not be as op

I gotta say, this is undoubtably the most creative take on items for future games that i've seen. definitely very intricate but I agree that increased player interactions ought to be central goal of the game mechanically (Thats why i continue to find mk wii more fun than mk8). that said, my biggest point is i think that the dropped lightening bolt ought to work like it does in the item rain game mode where it shocks everyone but the user who picks it up; the person most likely to pick up a dropped item is someone towards the back so that seems better balanced than that same peerson already behind, being penalized.

i don't think the lightning bolt idea of yours would work well. if someone dropped an item as powerful as a lightning bolt, they would simply go in reverse and pick it back up- essentially making the game mechanics of dropping items on the racetrack meaningless if you could just simply go in reverse and pick up the item you dropped- there would be no point. it's the same reason why i made powerful items like the blue shell, bullet bill, lightning bolt, etc. punishing if you happen to touch them. any racer would stop in their tracks and go out of their way to pick an item like a bullet bill no matter how inconvenient it is, because items like those are basically race winners. only players with Super Hearts can pick these items up, making the Super Heart item itself a much more scarier item to see being used on the raceway. glad to see another person realize the weight of player to player interaction in Mario Kart gameplay- the less there is of it, the less fun everybody has- even the racer in 1st place. glad you liked it :)

If they brang the mega mushroom back, I think they would make it the way it was in Tour, where it just knocked people back instead of crushing them. If it DID crush them, it would absolutely be the same as running over shocked people in MK8 so that they don’t get stopped in their tracks.

there's something really satisfying about crushing racers in a silly mario game though- i don't know if the item would be as fun to use if the silly squishing mechanic is gone. it's a dorky little detail i think NEEDS to be a part of the Mega Mushroom

5:35 I’m in the camp to just remove them off the roulette!!! Get a max of 10 coins, but still the fact you can’t have Shells or Bananas protect you 24/7 is enough to remove then

Id love to see a Warp Box item. Switch places with someone via random. Blue Small Mushroom to shrink and access small beneficial track shortcuts. The Super Cape to reflect items back at opponents.

I’d say the coins could work differently. Let there be coins within normal items (more coins the more powerful the item is) and they is no recovery penalty, just the speed boost (up to 10) with a maximum of 25 coins you can have at a time. However, coins work like in Super Mario Kart, if you don’t have coins, items hurt twice as much. Also, stronger items make you lose more coins. Because you get coins with every item, the coin item is replaced by a brick item, where you can drop it and maybe use it as a shield with good timing.

Consider: Thrown Blue Shells innately act like Winged Blue Shells and only focus first place. HOWEVER, rather than becoming landmines when knocked to the track, if a player runs into it they "kick" it into action as a grounder Blue Shell that bends towards any player in front of it as it homes in on first. That way, the blue shells given to players in the back don't accidentally get weaponized against the few players behind them, but it instead flips the script and punishes the original holder for not using it by letting someone behind them take advantage of it in a scarier format.

A bunch of the debut items feel overdesigned. A key thing about Mario Kart is its simplicity in which anyone can get into the game and play at any level, with the actual competitive stuff being second. I do like a bunch of ideas but I feel could use some finetuning. The Flashing Shell in particular may sound good on paper but in practice I'm willing to bet it will definitely backfire because the middle players are always in havoc. I get what you're trying to make through it as a greater equalizer compared to the Blue Shell, but you can't really control the chaos of the mid race like this, it needs more guidance. Players inherently will only look out for themselves, and you're asking too much to get 6+ players at least to stop doing what they're doing and focus on 1st place. It's a pacebreaker a tad too far from the guided missile that is the Blue Shell. I do think that the idea of random item boxes to make fake ones prominent is very interesting idea that would make all tracks be more chaotic but not too chaotic, but it would also require a lot of testing, since too many item boxes at once could easily make the races too messy with items flying everywhere, but just reducing the number of box rows could easily lead to the opposite effect in which races are too boring and barren. It'd be challenging to tackle design-wise but I feel it has loads of potential, heck, it could go the custom MKWii route ala item rain. P blocks are also a neat idea to make Coins more engaging, as it could potentially lead to some very insane blocks depending on how coins are placed on the track. Heck, it could go the opposite route in which some tracks are designed deliberately with some coin/block shortcuts in mind, in which activating a P-switch temporarily activates and deactivates some routes both for offensive and defensive play, but again, since this fundamentally changes the tracks themselves, it would require a lot of careful track-making to strike a good balance between usefulness and reliability while not going overboard. Combining the POW Block and Super Horn is super inspired though. The Ice Flower seems fine, but at the same time I feel like it doesn't do enough, which in my opinion is why it hasn't been added yet. Losing control but keeping some speed of your vehicle will only really be detrimental in tracks that are heavy on curves and hazards, and not every track can be like that, otherwise it could easily become very frustrating when you need to snake around stuff. Mr. I doesn't do anything. You get information, but consider the average track length and the randomness of items. What really can you do with that information in practice? Mecha-Koopa is overdesigned as well. I get that it's supposed to be a hindrance like it is in games, but blowing the player up and also preventing item usage, and multiple times at that, seems excessive. Those are the first notes that come to mind. That said, it's still a very bloated item pool, yes, 32 items is too much to the point that it becomes a mathematical nightmare as to the number of players and average play length of a track which would surely impact the way MK9 would be designed. I'm not that good at math, but the principle is that all items compete for a spot in a player's hands at all times. GIving more options to the players seems like a good idea until you realize that items are still random and you don't really get reliable ways to get what you want. Ultimately, adding more items could easily lead to frustration. Most of the returning items from Double Dash also overlap in many places with existing items already, which further brings the mathematical headache of item distribution. All in all, there's some interesting ideas. I do like the miscellaneous effects you bring to the table like Liightning Bolts clearing the track clean, or the changes between the Triple Shells, but it goes too far in some places. Interesting video.

that's what makes the flashing shell amazing in my opinion- most players will only look out for themselves, so the item will never reach 1st place nine times out of ten, but oh boy, when it does, it's a special event, giving every racer behind 3rd the star effect. (not to mention, this special event being a common occurrence would make frontrunners kill themselves) temporary boxes will definitely change the pace of Mario Kart in ways that will be unexpected, but like you said, we won't know what those effects will be unless rigorous play testing is done. do keep in mind that this Mario Kart will not have double items, so that will drastically change the way players use/hold their items, and temporary item boxes strewn about the racetrack is a change that will ease players into returning back to single items only in this next Mario Kart. this is exactly what i had in mind when designing the P-Switch, i didn't specify this in the video as i didn't want to flood the general viewer with information dumps, but rather ease them into the basic/general idea of what i want to see in the P-Switch item, with more intricate ideas/shortcuts to be expanded upon by the viewer(like you just did,) or game designer, (if this ever makes it to one.) thanks, i wanted to return the POW block in a meaningful way and i hated the odd design of the Super Horn so I killed two birds with one stone. i can see that, probably the only item i would second guess in removing/completely reworking from scratch. Mr I, i imagined being used in tight races, to inform 1st/2nd of everything going on around them. they'll be able to slow down should a blue shell be acquired, know when a POW block is about to be finished, know when a P-Switch is in play, if 2nd has a Bowser Shell, if a lightning bolt is used, if someone has triple reds, the list goes on, but i also see what your point is. another reason i introduced this item, truthfully, is to give the person in 1st place another item that makes them defenseless, but still offers a use in some aspects. in this Mario Kart, 1st has a lot more options that are fair for both themselves and the racers behind them: Bananas, Coins, Green Shells, Fake Item Boxes, Triple Greens, Mr. I and POW Blocks(rarely.) so it doesn't always feel like they are getting coins and overall giving them more of a feeling of variety. i don't think 1st place should have a less enjoyable experience just getting coins and bananas- they'd like a little more variety too. probably miscommunication on my part, but the Mechakoopa only spins you out, it doesn't explode. once it's in your kart, you can't get items for a while. once the Mechakoopa is done bothering you, it disappears forever. it only goes into sleeping mode if it hasn't hopped into someone's kart and it's hit with an item- it would be complete insanity if it could sic on to more than one racer. yeah, i was originally going to make a segment where i explain how the items are distributed throughout all positions. some items straight up cannot be obtained in certain positions, no matter how lucky one is, like 10th-12th place literally cannot get single mushrooms/red/green shells, coins or Mr Is. there's a lot more items impossible to be obtained in certain positions, but my video was already long enough and it's a game mechanic that a lot of people admittedly aren't too enthusiastic about like i am, so i ended up scrapping that part. all in all, thanks for your comment. i love seeing other people who are just as interested in items as i am. sorry it took a while to get back to this comment, had a lot of work recently, it's hard to get back to all these new comments :)

Will the POW Block affect players who are in the air? In Mario Kart Wii, that item can be avoided if you are airborne. Also, will it have a cooldown timer both for the first few seconds of the race and for subsequent uses?

Item idea: Double Cherry, upon use, multiple clones of the driver (controlled by AI) disperse from the main player, randomly collecting item boxes. Which when collected, add to an item pool of 4. Then using up and down on the stick, you can select any of the collected items to keep or use. If a rival hits any of the copies, they’ll disappear along with a random item slot in the pool.

I kinda hope that coins act as currency for a shop mechanic. No real money or anything. Just in game currency. So you can purchase any character, kart, or extra at your own pace. Kinda like how Sega Miles acted in Sonic And Sega All Star Racing. Also, the rainbow shell should be called the disco shell. That’s what people call it in Mario World.

I dont like tour but The way it handles the mega mushroom is perfect. You grow large and when you get hit you go back to normal. so it is like a shield and has power.

So first place now has no way at all to passively block items because lone banana peels and green shells cant be held back, while the Triple Red Shells are not longer orbiting, meaning that whoever has them might not so easily lose them by stranded bananas, shells or accidentally crossing another player, What's the first player supposed to do? Instead of "Thwompling" what about the Thwimp? is essentially a small Thwomp and is an already existing enemy. Also, does your version of MK9 would have a double item box mechanic like MK8DX? Also, I stopped on a red shell hehe.

that's correct. in mario kart 8/dx it's way too easy to stay ahead in first against competitors. i designed this item roster to push the racer in 1st to engage constantly with the players behind them to maintain the lead. it's not fun holding down ZR for the entire time you're in first. with the changes i put into place, the racer in 1st will be forced to interact with the rest of the racers, creating a more engaging race for users in the top positions. you're still able to block shells with bananas, death gripping ZR just isn't the norm for it anymore. even then, triple green shells are available as an item too, which orbit the user, so passively blocking items is still a game mechanic, it's just no longer a constant sight. triple red shells are dropped when the player holding them takes damage, so there's definitely many ways to topple these kinds of players. as for the thwimp, i wanted them to originally be the thwompling item, funnily enough, but it didn't make sense stylistically for them to crush the user, so i used the thwompling design. no, no double box item mechanic. would be wayy too insane, considering item boxes generate randomly throughout racetracks in my rendition. there would be just way too much item spam and my roster is pretty close to crawling into item spam territory. double item boxes would ballistically launch my item roster balance into the unplayable zone. cool! glad to see you made it that far into my video! thanks for the watch, and i love discussing item balance politics with other mario kart users!

In regards to the new items, I don't dislike any of them, but I can definitely see some of them being relegated into single-game obscurity (especially Mr. Eye). My favorites are the Ice Flower, P-Switch, and Lucky Clock; the first is one I'm shocked hasn't been incorporated into any Mario Kart game outside of Tour, and the latter two sound like they'd be fun and interesting. The Mechakoopa is interesting, but I personally think it should break immediately on being hit, instead of just dropping on the track, though that's just personal preference. The Flashing Shell I'd also alter slightly, so that it never locks on first place and would just keep circling the track until someone hits it, to differentiate it more from the blue shell. I think the Fire Flower should function like the Fireball, to be consistent with the Ice Flower and because I like it more that way. At the end of the day though, I'd be satisfied with this roster!

Oh yeah, I think the Giga Bob-omb from Tour could be added, to complete the trio of giant items. I always imagined it being reworked similar to a Giant Banana, where after the large one explodes it splits into three small bob-ombs; would certainly be as insane as the other giant items.

@@ZombieManF lol im just enjoying the idea of seeing a racer get a literal nuclear bomb from an item box. don't know if it would work though, as bomb-ombs, when exploding, take up a large area of effect that racers are harmed by. a giga bomb would be even larger, and three bombs would explode right away. might be a tad unfair... thanks though!

It's definitely the kind of item that would need to be playtested to know exactly if/how it would function, but in theory I saw it as being an opposite to the Giant Banana (like how you described the POW Block vs. Lightning). I imagine they would both have the similar function of blocking off large sections of the track, but while the Giant Banana would create long-lasting clutter on the track, the Giga Bob-omb would completely clear it.

8:09 The bullet bill I never liked everyone looks the same when they use it. Its cool and iconic. But what if your car instead got a energy boost around it. Like in F-zero and Bayblade. Each character would have a different color. Peach would be Pink and Mario would be blue or red. Anyway a hard choice since I still like bullet bill.

the Coins not giving anything after 10 but it going up to 20 is odd. it just makes everything risky and no one would try to ever get them after 10. maybe there can be some more risk reward to it. like maybe red coins. like if you get to 20 Coins you get a red coin and it flips you back to 10 coins. the red coin giving you a higher mini boost stat. or gives you an instant mini boost when you go to get one so it just turns purple right away when you start drifting and is used up. so collection coins and stacking up instant minis to pretty much mushroom yourself when needed. the Blue coin should be an item also. it could be that if you use one you will see other blue coins spawn in front of you that you can then collect as you go. maybe it can give you boosts that slowly get bigger tell the last blue coin to give a big boost at the end. or collecting the spawned blue coins it can give you a blue coin that acts like a normal coin but it can't be lost and it stacks with the normal coins speed increase. Mechakoopa should be a just walk back and forth on the map where you put it. maybe it can get faster when it sees a driver but it should stay in that part of the track like the other map enemies. Thwomp should be like a normal thwomp but you get to pick where to put it. maybe a Mega Thwomp that can bounce all that is near it were it can get people boosts or mess them up with their bounces like if put near a short cut or something. Yoshi egg. I think being able to trail items behind you should be just normal with the standard trail able items. but for the egg it should be able to auto trail letting you get more items and not having to hold it at all. even letting you get more then one egg trailing. I don't like the egg being able to track others and I think it should be a aimed thing like a green shell but after going so far it should just break and drop items. Flashy shell. maybe something it should be like a red shell but that goes backwards on the map gunning for people as it goes. or maybe it can take control over your driving while it lets you pick a spot on the map then it will let you go. it flies up and air strikes that location. so it has to be well aimed or timed. or maybe it can act like a Blue shell but it leaves a trail behind it that draft boosts anyone on it but if it hits someone it turns them into a boost pad or a jump pad. or turns them into a stone Spin Boost Pillars. for a few seconds. Blooper should be a throwable item that leaves a random trail of ink behind it as it slides a crossed the map in a line in front of you. tell it stops or hits something or someone. then it should blow up into a big puddle of ink and coating people in ink that it hits. the ink trail should just make you lose traction and makes you slide a lot more. but those hit get the ink explosion get on their face like normal. Boo should just make you invis and gives you the ability to pass throw pretty much everything. like walls on the map and stuff you will still be slowed by off road but not as much. so good off road stats with this pretty much means no slow or even a speed boost off road. POW block should make a wave that travels over the whole map out from your location. only being dodged by air born drivers or underwater. the Browser shell should give you a draft boost while you follow behind it. that would be neat. I think there should of a different list of power ups also the form power ups these power ups stay on you tell you get hit and you can use any item while being in those forms. Tanooki when you jump you will swing a tail around you hitting anyone that comes close also being able to break things like green shell, red shell or bananas. it has a vary small hit box. Cat when you jump you can quick side step in the direction you click also letting you hit anyone you land on. (i loved double dash where you can punch left and right making your kart move sideways lol) Cap when you hold jump you will the cap will turn into a mini glider making you able to get more air and even turn in a real glide when high enough Squirrel lets you be less slowed by the off road and jumping when on the off road it gives you a boost forward. Frog lets you go faster under water and jumping gives you a burst of speed in whatever direction almost like your swimming. I also did like character special items in some Mario karts. items you can only get with that select character also map only items would be a neat idea also. like if there is a water only map have a few fish items. and mainly flying maps could have stuff like cloud items or something. idk lots of ideas that can be explored. heck even kart only items could be a thing lol. would be a neat game idea. might have to mess with making my own version of mariokart some day

I wish they had the mega mushroom in Mariokart 8 deluxe And the bomb should make a flash when your not lookin at it. Like in Wipeout pure, Pulse and HD Fury Maybe they was unshure if people would get epilepsy. Im fine with having a ton of items. They had it in Wipeout Fusion for PS2. You just had to use what you got. I don't care if items are similar. They just need to spawn at the right moment to make things fair. Hmmm...

There are too many items tbh. Getting exactly what you want would be borderline impossible with this roster. I would create different types of item blocks that host different selections of items to prevent the item roster from being too inconsistent. Perhaps a red item block could focus on non-green shell offensive items with the chain chomp being exclusive to it. Yellow item blocks could focus on powerful items only found in the lower positions, with it almost exclusively giving bananas to middle to high positions. Stuff like that.

Requiring the player to drop the banana at the right time is not a good idea. Its anti Mario kart by design. Lest take an example. The bloops. This hideous item, rewards expert players and olny affect newbies. Meaning the guy in the lead, probably and expert is gonna be less affect than everyone else. Especially because he isn't in an item chaos. Dropping the banana at the right timing is not a good idea. It will become trivial for experts, and not viable for newbies. Draging the banana behind, is not making newbies win races because of luck. If they are newbies they probably arnt in the lead. So less banana, and less use for it. And for the expert, dropping at the right time will not be that much harder than holding the button. But once the newbies manage to get In the lead. The ease of use is allowing him to put a fight. All you are doing is changing a mechanic from, easy for everyone, to hard for newbies. You are making the skill/reward gap even larger. Which is not a good thing for Mario kart. Especially because this item is not a free win for anyone. A newbie will not win a race just with his luck. He first need to take the lead for your change to take effect. And if you want a mechanic like that then maybe add it on a new item. That does something different than a banana a shell, or a bomb. But it's only use in first place is to be a defensive item. And you would get more of those the further you are from the rest of the players.

It doesn't even try to improve on or be like the previous Mario Kart games. If Mario Kart Tour can be considered Mario Kart 9, you might as well call Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Mario Kart 10. Nintendo actually considers the "Tour" courses in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe more as new courses. Why do Ninja Hideaway, Sky-High Sundae, Merry Mountain and Yoshi's Island completely lack a prefix? Why did Sky-High Sundae and Yoshi's Island debut in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe first? Why do all of the "Tour" courses go in roughly the same spots like new courses in the Wii U version's DLC? Why are there always at least 3 "Tour" courses in each wave? They're not classic courses. If this is to preserve them, why are they being preserved? It's because Mario Kart Tour will shut down. Why would "Mario Kart 9" shut down?
