I feel like the machine learning would have to have a massive overhaul otherwise all 11 characters would either take the exact same route and be boring, or would constantly crash from trying to take the same route, and it would be a mess

Adding checkpoints that contain an incrementing requirement value, which corresponds to the current lap the agent's in could work? Maybe a one-directional barrier that keeps them from going back through the finish line until it reaches that last checkpoint line? That way, it'll actually be forced to go through the whole track to complete the lap instead of going in circles and stuff.

I have a good racing AI: They turn at corners by sensing a trigger zone and turning the direction the tag says they should

This is very awesome! I have watched some speedrunning breakdowns that explained how the track is laid out. In the video the track is set up with something like 40 checkpoints. These checkpoints are what is used to reset your character if you were to fall off the map. As you go around the track the game keeps score of what checkpoint you have past and what the checkpoint should be. Meaning you cant go from 1 and skip to 3. This guarantees that you have to go all the way around the track to get a lap. You could use this to ensure your AI is getting around each section of the track the most efficient. either way, awesome video and I look forward to more content :)

This is exactly what I did! Each progression through the correct check point rewarded the AI. The AI also was fed it's direction toward the next checkpoint.

NO WAY!! I had the same thought for a Mario Kart game where there are ragdolls and the karts have healthbars, if the healthbars go down the kart blows up and the rider just becomes a ragdoll a tu,bles around for five seconds before respawning where the "accident" happened!
