The CUT Items of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

At the last Nintendo direct, they announced an absolutely massive new update for Mario kart 8 deluxe’s booster course pass. That was of course the addition of new characters, starting with Birdo. That got me thinking, what other new things could they add back in the future? Well over the course of the Mario kart series, there have been just over 30 items that don’t appear in Mario kart 8 deluxe. Today we’re gonna look at super Mario kart, Mario kart 64, Mario kart double dash, Mario kart Wii, Mario kart 7, and Mario kart tour to discover the cut items of Mario kart 8 deluxe!

But that item is useless. Much like the coin, it doesn’t defend you, it’s even worse than the coin because at least the coin gives you more speed. The fake item box wouldn’t fool anyone. Who would hit a fake item box thinking it’s real? Unless it’s completely covering a real box, which it’s very hard to place there.

Blocking parts of the road, that's it, and the fake box does that better than the banana since it's bigger and has longer hitstun (which even stops all momentum, unlike the banana) It's obviously not the best item in the game or anything but the point of first place items is not to be the strongest. I for one would appreciate seeing some more variety in what pops up in first place Also it's not difficult at all to just drop the fake box right after a real one

Instead of being a fake item box, maybe do a fake coin. The placement of using these are more ideal compared to a fake item box since item boxes are normally in rows & not in random places. Plus they can look similar to a coin but a darker yellow & an X on the coin & not a line.

@@Odyssey_Central Hot take of mine: I think every item in the series should return (at least for offline play) now that players can select which items appear. If you don't like an item, you can turn it off. Say what you want about which items sucked, but I think they should all be an option for offline play for those who want to experiment with them. Also, two changes I'd make to thunder clouds: I'd have them able to be detonated when the player tells it to go, and I'd have the thunderbolt go for the length of time of whatever place you are in when it strikes you (whether you are in first or last, it lasted the length of a first place lightning bolt). It would also make a great new game mode, sort of like the opposite of the shine thief battle mode where if someone has the cloud for more than a certain amount of time they get eliminated and it keeps going until there's only one person left with the time getting shorter each round.

The FIB was REALLY underrated in Wii. It was easily the best trap item because of its massive hit box and the way it destroyed all momentum. Combine that with the occasional blind corner or risky shortcut and you’ve got an amazing way to break away from the pack

Yeah, while I did like it as a more offensive, less defensive alternative to the banana peel, the fact that it was dark red in Wii completely defeats it's intended purpose. At least in Double Dash, it was smaller, a lighter shade of red, and disguised it's colors from a distance a little better, so it was a _little_ harder to tell apart from a real one in that game.

It's also worth mentioning that some items that did returned in Tour got changes. Mega Mushroom- now gives you one hit point instead of unlimited Super Leaf- Let's you hover for a short while and collects coins

If the lightning cloud was brought back and could be detonated whenever you want instead of as soon as you get it, I think it would be a pretty cool item. It would be like a game of hot potato but there’s a reason to hold on to the potato for a bit. It'd be fun to see someone use the cloud for a while, then pass it on to someone else while just before it blows up.

I prefer the way competitive modders changed them to give you mega mushroom ability instead of shrinking you, so rather than you trying to drive into other players, you have to avoid other players trying to take your powerup

The player who obtains it should definitely be able to decide when to activate it. They should get a timer when activated, like piranha plant or fire flower, so they can plan the right time to pass it on.

I think the Dash Ring would be a really funny addition if they didn't make it have set locations. The fact that other players can use it and it spawns in front of you can make them into obstacles if used right, like you can make other players crash straight into walls or off ledges.

I feel like the problem with Mario Kart is that there's too many offensive items that doesn't make you get further ahead, but instead brakes the pack so you can catch up to them. This results in the leader being more safe from everyone, while everyone are slowing down eachother. So Mario Kart should preferably add more items that makes you get ahead more. Giant mushroom, which is an offensive item, but it gives you a speed boost. The hearts, which is a defensive item. Then I think I once suggested a launch star. You activate it, and you stop fully, you aim, then you fly forward hitting people and item out of the way. You can't control the speed boost, so use it in a good spot. It's also offensive, but still gives you a speed boost. Have it be an item for 8+ and have it give you a massive boost.

This is it entirely, and is even partially why Blue Shells fail as they punish the user, person hit, and rewards the person in 2nd all while everyone around the user gets offensive or speed items. You should bring people up to 1st, not bring 1st down. All bringing people does is make everyone suffer but if you bring everyone up and feel like you're going fast it feels like you have a chance and are catching up. It creates the speed and excitement of racing.

The Fake Item Box is my favorite Mario Kart item and I _really_ hope it is brought back. I actually think it could be reworked to be more useful. Instead of acting like a simple banana, when a player drives into it, it will act like a Lightning, shrinking the player for a while. This way it will not just be a worse Banana Peel and it'd have a much more interesting function

That’s a pretty good buff to the Fake Item Box (or a FIB for short). One more change I’d like to see for the FIB is to have it look somewhat similar to regular item boxes, but with a couple differences. Instead of not being being red like in Double Dash and Wii, have it look like an actual item box with an upside down question mark like in 64, and have it not spin like in DS.

FIB is not a worse banana, it would actually be insanely useful in MK8D. The item balance currently doesn’t allow for much trapping, in 99% of the cases it is better to keep a banana behind you instead of placing it down. A FIB forces you to place it down somewhere, encouraging offence over defence. In the current item balance, FIBs as they were in MKWii would be amazing.

Mario Kart DS actually did have one unique item: the Real Item Box. You could only get this item in Battle Mode, and only after you'd been eliminated. It's only gonna come back if they add a Last Man Standing option to 8 Deluxe.

a big reason why i always disliked the leaf is that if you activate it instantly, by the time you reach the next item boxes its still active, preventing you from picking up a new item. then the leaf runs out shortly after passing the item boxes, meaning youre defenceless since the person behind you is certainly gonna get an item.

Unpopular Opinion: Thunder Cloud was one of the coolest and most interesting items in MK. The second you get it, the adrenaline that gets pumped through you is amazing. That heart racing feeling as you rush to slam your kart into another person to give them the same rush you had. It's the perfect chaos item and I have no idea why people hate it so much

i honestly have always thought the pow block was underrated. its main purpose in online play isnt necessarily to screw people over, because the dodging mechanic is pretty well known, but the fact that it gets rid of the players items is pretty powerful, all things considered. its a far more strategic item than people give it credit for

The thing that makes the bubble so good is the fact that you can steer and you can turn sharper than when normally driving, and that’s what makes it so good, you can go over any off road and it lasts quite a while if you don’t get hit, so you can take a lot of shortcuts

I think the Giant Banana from DK and DK also drops 3 smaller bananas when you get hit by it right? It also doesn't get destroyed by shells. The main difference between a Bullet Bill and Chain-Chomp is indeed the bullet bill makes you invulnerable. But the chain chomp goes down the track after the chain breaks, potentially hitting more enemies ahead of you. And also, the fancy music, dang.

OK, so a few things u either forgot to mention or were mistakes: Tanooki Leaf: In Mario kart tour, it acts like the feather letting u hover and to my knowledge has no impact on other racers. The only real use in 8 would be to attract coins. Obviously this would be the version they use so not likely. Mega Mushroom: In Tour, it acts like a star but with no off road invincibility and it only let's u tank 1 hit before u shrink back to normal size. Idk how this would change ur opinion but just thought I should mention it. Also doesn't let u shrink people, instead doing the knockback that a shell would Heart: In Tour, it doesn't let u steal the item once u hit. Don't know how this would change ur opinion on whether its coming or not but I think it heavily reduces its chances. Bowser Shell: In Tour, u are able to hold it behind u and if anything hits the bowser shell whilst it's behind u, it shrinks. U didn't, mention it so thought i should put it here. Giant Banana: When u run into it, it splits into 3 smaller bananas. U didn't mention it so I thought I should put it here. Bubble: It actually acts more like a star with u being immune to offroad however u are immune to one hit. U can steer the kart still but can't drift and pop the bubble at anytime by tapping the screen in tour (so mashing the item button in 8) to end the item early. I think this description shows off more important and unique traits about it which weren't in the video. Ice Flower: In Mario Kart Tour, the frenzy version of the fire balls acts like mk8's fire flower. This is the same for the ice flower so it might act like this in 8. Overall, rlly enjoyed the video but also hope this comment helps clear up the mistakes/stuff not mentioned for some reason 😊

Fun fact: The chain chomp was originally going to return in MKDS as there is an item sprite and minimap sprite of the chain chomp. You can even actually get it to load as an item in the beta version but using it just crashes the game.

imo the fake item box's primary function in earlier games was to give chaining items in 1st a risk. you can drop your green shell/banana behind you for a chance at hitting 2nd and breaking away further, but there's always a chance that you'll get a fib and end up with no protection when you need it the coin already serves this purpose in 8dx, and having two items in the 1st-place roulette that can't be used defensively honestly sounds frustrating. unless item chances got a significant rebalance accompanying its appearance, i'd honestly prefer if it remained absent

How about optional item alternatives? Either as bonus slots you can pick from during kart selection; or as character-exclusives like in Double Dash; or as course-exclusives. For instance (optionally) being able to convert all (or some) red shells in Yoshi's Circuit to Yoshi's Eggs; or make all bananas become giant at DK Jungle. This adds some chaotic fun to casual races, and can be turned off in competitive races. If a bonus slot during kart selection to further customize your kart, this might compete with passive bonuses such as an ability that says "when you are hit by an item, you gain a coin" or "you gain 5 bonus points if you end a race in second place" or such.

I never even knew the lightning cloud gave a speed boost..I only remember it as the item that'd randomly be passed onto you shocking you lol I'd actually love to see it returned! Maybe they could give it a warning cue to let you know it'll shock soon (like maybe the cloud slowly turns black, and once black it shocks whoever is holding it). It sucks when you get bumped and passed onto only to get zapped but it'd be a really interesting item to spice up gameplay.

I'd love if they decreased the size of the chomp a bit, made it zig and zag across the track as it lunges forward, and had a sort of "drift to try to stay in some control while at the mercy of this unleashed beast" mechanic where the better you handle, the more speed the chomp can achieve because you're less dead weight. Maybe move Bill to the Rear items and buff it a little and put Chomp in the Mid-pack set with these changes. The less predictable movements would shake things up while the drift mechanic both gives the user something to do (more like Boring Bill) and, balanced right, could be a great item for a skilled player to break out of the middles and close in on second or first place. Or it could be set up as an item that's a gamble to keep in the pocket for that grab at first during the final stretch, hoping you get long bounds forward and not piddly little hops. It just seems like it'd be fun to have an item that hybridizes Bullet Bill and Piranha Plant.

i think the "negative" items you mentioned from the wii like thundercloud and pow, (besides pow because i never had any issues with it to dislike it nor like it) the thindercloud had a certain fun to it. and i would love to see it again, even only if in minigame modes. people say they want mario kart to get harder yet completely disregard those things that do. yes its annoying, but its literally supposed to be. thats the fun, passing it over to other people, maybe they hit you again and its a hot potato kind of thing. things to actually make the game more interesting rather than it being the easiest thing to get 1st once you know a track.

- My top 6 (in no particular order) 1: Mega mushroom, personally my favorite item from Wii because the song it plays when someone uses it is just to daunting! And its slightly less op as a Star but just as fun to use if not more! 2: Mega Banana, I think it would be fun if you could only throw it infront of yourself and you cant hold it behind you. Because first of all the flying animation looks pretty cool and the player that uses it has to be strategic to not throw it infront of themselves. 3: Mini mushrooms, I would see you getting two of them and having them spin around yourself like the triple items, they wont block incoming projectiles but you can bump into other player to make them smaller for a little while. And you can also just throw/drop them. And they obviously would be blue and small. 4: Pow Block, yes I hate this item but it is much more possible to dodge it. The only thing I would change is making it more rare, making the horn block able to basically block it as well, and making the shockwave and spin less bad. 5: Fake item box, if they would make the fake item box return they need to make it the same color and texture as an normal item box but just removing the question mark or rotating it upside down. (So just basically not the Wii version) 6: Ice flower: You perfectly described how i think about the Ice flower for Mario kart 8, its a very unique item with a unique effect! - Honorable mentions The coin box: basically just a very rare version of a coin and only obtainable by someone in first place. The barrel types: Like you said in the video they just cause great crazy hectic situations for the player that uses it and the players around them!

i like the idea of the ice flower, in mario kart double dash one of my favorite things to do was try to push people into the "ice bergs" so they would freeze and slide out

The Heart and the Super Leaf works different in Tour. The heart no longer picks up the item that hits you and the Super Leaf spawns a tanooki tail that spins around you and makes you float a bit.

We can still see the cut times being added in the games since the 3rd wave release did show empty slots in the custom items in both Vs/ GP and Battle modes, so their is still hope that a couple of them will be added in the future.

Some of the items that returned to tour actually changed how they operated. The tail, for example, acts as a tornado that spins around your kart for a few seconds, the fire flower acts like the double dash version, the heart only protects you and doesn’t give you the item that hit you, etc

I came up with a change for the thunder cloud It acts *similar* to a blue shell, as it would travel through the course, a little faster than most karts, but it would have a constant or quick firing lightning bolt under it that hits anyone in a small radius that shrinks anyoneit hits. It lasts for maybe 15ish seconds, and then slams into the ground, creating a shockwave the size of a blue shell explosion that also shrinks. But if you hold it, does the same thing as it originally did, shocking you after 15 seconds, and it transfers to anyone you bump into. If it goes off in your hand, it will be thrown automatically. It can be thrown forwards and backwards, but it will always throw forwards if it goes off in your hand Or maybe some kind of Hot Potato battle mode

The tail was a great item that I liked but it really had two or three problems that I run into a lot in online. First, because it makes you hop it absolutely screws drifting over way more than it ever should. Second, it's hit detection was notoriously bad in online, you could ram someone while spamming it madly and still not get them. Third, for whatever reason, it would just completely delete Bob-omb explosions, so you were effectively immune to them while possessing it. Bombs did tend to travel chaotically in 7 but I don't think that justifies complete nullification... It also tended last longer than desired and prevent use of the next set of item blocks but that was never a huge issue as far as I was concerned.

The POW Block should've been what the Super Horn is today, a blue shell counter. It would've been so much better if it sent out 3 shockwaves around the player, destroying anything it touches.

One odd way that i saw the thundercloud be made better is that if kept all the way or say "snagged" from another racer at the last moment it makes the racer giant.

I could definitely see all the giant banana, shell and bomb be added to MK8D. They're the ones that would only take minimal programming and since the tracks were already designed around having these specific items available it wouldn't change the essence of the game. Ice flower, hammers and fake item boxes would definitely good additions too.

With one simple revision to the Thunder Cloud, it could be one of the most fun items in the game. *Remove the lightning.* The Thunder Cloud would *only* gives the player a speed boost, which gets transferred between racers. By doing this, you keep the hot potato gimmick but instead of fighting to get rid of it, you're fighting for it.

If Fake Item Box came back, there would be two versions: a red one with a delayed countdown-based explosion* and a green one that works the same way as a landmine. If Mario Kart locked juiced-up versions of existing items behind a 10-coin requirement, then I could see green FIBs be the juiced-up version of the red FIB. * Hitting a red FIB will let it land on your head. It explodes if the countdown timer exceeds zero or if you crash into another FIB, assuming you didn't jump enough times. Jump rapidly to get it off your head and let it blow up behind you. It's kinda like the POW block from MKWii and the bubble from DKR.

The POW block is actually often good in a strategic sense. Ask any competitive Mario Kart Wii player, and they'll tell you the POW block is one of the most strategic items in the entire franchise. Yes, it's true that you can avoid losing speed by doing a wheelie/up tricking at the right moment, but its negative effects can still be two-fold. For one, the players in front of you will still drop any items (or be forced to spam at a possibly very inconvenient time) they could have used to do a shortcut or use strategically otherwise. And the other thing that I'd argue makes it an even more useful item is that when you trick to avoid losing your speed, if the POW gets your opponents on a corner, they'll end up in really awkward off-road positions or even fall off the track. So it's definitely a much better item than people give it credit for. To be fair of course, getting one as your last item on a track like N64 Mario Raceway when everyone behind you has speed items to do the shortcut does leave you feeling pretty helpless (I may or may not be speaking from experience here lmao)

You forgot to mention you can avoid the pow block shaking, also for the thunder cloud it should benefit them as its given to people in middle spots, punishing them more (even tho its a risk-reward item) Or use the thunder cloud as first for another balancing item like the blue shell
