ADDING OVERDRIVE 1970 C10. A833 (MY6) SWAP. RID OF 3 SPEED!

This is my 1970 Chevy c10. Installing a rare trans. A833 aka MY6 aka NP440. It's an aluminum case 4 speed with the 4th gear being an overdrive. These came factory with a Hurst shifter. Same case length, input and output shaft as a Saginaw or Muncie 3 or 4 speed. New Process made this direct bolt in for GM. GM installed these in 1500 pickups in the early 1980's.
I have been collecting the parts to make this swap happen for over 10 years! Parts are hard to procure.
Originally my truck came with a TH350 auto trans., which I swapped to a 3 speed Saginaw back in the early 2000's.
I am now swapping the 3 speed for a 4 speed overdrive.

I have this transmission behind a 400 SBC in my 70 Chevelle SS. The .73 overdrive lets me cruise at 60-62 mph turning 2000 rpm.

Great video and your enthusiasm is refreshing. Your truck is really sweet. I completely understand your desire to have overdrive with that low rear end ratio. I have a 5 speed ZF in my 95 Ford Superduty diesel and OD is 0.76 but with the rear end ratio at 1:5.13 it really doesn't help. The good news is even pulling a 16,000 pound trailer I can be in overdrive at 40 mph and I never have to downshift for hills.

Thanks. I have had this truck since 2005. It's nice to have a good cruising gear, finally! Imagine what your truck would be like without OD!

good stuff. Had a buddy in high school who's Dad owned a 6 cylinder Chevy half ton with this transmission. This would have been around 1989 , the truck was either an 86 or an 87. I could have sworn it was an 87 but it could have been an 86. I remember cruising this truck around one Saturday night and thinking how odd the shift pattern was with "o/d" on it.

I got one in my 81 C10! I scored when i bought the truck, i was just told it was a manual 4 speed and i expected a SM465. I got there and i just stared the hurst shifter. Rest is history

It's not a difficult job. Take the trans out first, then the bellhousing. Piece of cake. Transmission is pretty light, I didn't even need a jack to install it. It's all aluminum. Once it's out, get a new clutch & pressure plate, and have the flywheel turned (resurfaced) and checked for cracks. May as well do a rear main seal while you're in there. Good luck!

I don't blame you for being so happy. I know I miss that transmission in my '81. I could make that little 250 inline 6 scream shifting gears. Hahaha And then, you could shift into overdrive and cruise all day on the interstate.

Also used in vans. I've got one with the super long forward leaning handle. They can also be found in 4x4 applications that bolted directly to the transfer case. My manual calls for ATF fluid in the MY6.

It was made by New Process, with Chevy specs for input and output shafts, and speedo. It is a nice setup.

@@marktolman6037 They actually made at least 2 versions of this transmission. They made a cast iron and aluminum cases. You have the version where 2 of the bellhousing bolts are in the GM locations and the other 2 are Chrysler locations and requires the special bellhousing. I have the other version that all 4 bolt holes are the GM pattern and bolts up to any GM bellhousing. So I always assumed the iron version had the hybrid bolt pattern like yours. Maybe the iron cases came in 4x4's I don’t know🤷‍♂️

That's cool! I never knew the cast iron version existed. It's definitely a rare find. I'm curious if it also came with the factory Hurst shifter?

@@marktolman6037my understanding is that the cast version was mopar 60 some odd year to 75, then they went to aluminum Those mopar are a833 The Gm is np440 I just bought a couple of these for my c10 and might want to put one in my v6 converted Jeep. Manuals are fun!

Wow i had no idea Chevy bought Mopar 4 speeds back in the day thats pretty cool, check the counter shaft bore in the case, they have a tendency to wallow out

I have the same trans, I’d like to put in my 05 Silverado. It’ll bolt right up to the factory v6, I’d just be trading a 4sp overdrive auto for a 4sp overdrive stick. Plus it would be a cool combo nobody’s done in a newer truck like that.

Hi Mark, I have that same trans and bell housing, yep very rare! Mine is going in a 96 chevy cheyan. I'm pulling the v6 and 5 speed and putting the big 4 speed back in behind a built 355. Can you share the part numbers for the seals and bearings that you found? That is going to be a sweet ride when you get it done. Good luck!!

Sounds like a sweet combo when it's done! I used Brewers Performance (ohio), they supplied the bearings and seals. They were quite helpful, just give a call. Find them on Google.

A little known fact is mopar truck and van applications had coarse internal gears and a .71 fourth gear.. Because they didn't have awesome 426 torque in the late 70s, it used a wimpy input shift with 23 teeth and modest diameter. Aluminum casing made them even more prone to fail. Classic example of shortcuts that allowed obscene executive pay and made US carmakers fall behind japan.

Hi. What size flywheel do you have? I am also converting from a saginaw and have the larger size flywheel. Cant find much info on if the my6 bellhoysing will fit. Have not had time to physically measure it either. Any help would be great. Thanks

My flywheel takes the 11" clutch, with a 168-tooth flywheel.

Will do. Yes, overdrive ratio is very close.
