I hope by sharing my experience of battling severe depression that others, particularly men, may gain a better understanding that mental illness is real, that it is common, and most importantly that it is treatable. I hope by sharing my story as the CEO of a company that others may realize that mental illness does not discriminate; that they may seek professional help if needed; that they may become more willing to share their mental health stories; and that we can make headway to end the stigma around mental illness.
Brian Murray is the Chief Executive Officer of Ryan Companies US, Inc., a national commercial real estate services company with expertise in designing, developing, constructing, financing, and managing commercial real estate properties. Before Ryan Companies he held financial roles at UnitedHealth Group and Arthur Andersen & Co.
He has personally battled depression in his life. Sadly, he has friends and extended family members who have tried or been successful in ending their struggle with mental illness through suicide. He is a champion of ending the stigma of mental illness, particularly among men, and willingly shares his own personal depression story with the goal of creating hope for others. He is a proponent of creating greater awareness in corporations of the signs of depression and anxiety, and strongly advocates that mental illness is real, common, and treatable. He and his wife, Shelly, live in Minneapolis and have three adult children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. He is an Executive living a privileged lifestyle, not many like him would admit they have this issue, so kudos to him. Mental health is the prime issue with society today, as we all hopefully know. As a leader, it’d be nice to see him push corporate spending towards better mental health, not only within companies, but towards our society overall. It obviously is a problem with shooting sprees and chaotic behavior we’ve never seen before. Some of the leaders of our country are showing signs of depression, with all the odd behavior they’ve shown. Good mental health needs to be a priority on the agenda of all organizations. If you ever find someone desolate, help them out if you can. You may be their only hope.

Excellent video! It’s important for people to understand that mental health issues don’t discriminate. It affects all walks of life, every tax bracket, men and women young and old. As a survivor myself, I can tell you that it makes me very happy to see more and more people unafraid to come out and tell their stories. The more people who are willing to do so, the more people that can be reached and learn that they aren’t alone and not to lose hope because losing hope was my biggest demon. People must know there are resources in every county across this nation. There are support groups, online forums and meetups for people who suffer from a mental health issue. God Bless You, Brian for telling your story and reaching so many!

Thank you so much. I’m currently going through a bad case of mental illness and I know that I need help and I know that I need to make that call and set up an appointment. And I also eventually want to be a mental health professional once I get over my issues. Thank you for your Ted Talk

It's so important that we talk about mental health, especially for men, as it's often a topic that is shrouded in stigma.

Thank you so much for your courage, Brian. Your story can have a huge impact and inspire many people. I am going to share this video with some men I know. I also think spirituality, combined with psychotherapy and mindfulness, can be the answer to most human issues.

People think getting to Executive is the brass ring. There is so much pressure and sacrifice that goes with it. Defining that as your paradigm for success can be problematic. I wonder sometimes if many of the abusive behaviors that can surface at those levels are symptoms of greater mental health issues.

I know from which he speaks. I am a widow to my husband's suicide. He was overworked and the pandemic exacerbated it. He worked harder from home than when he was in the office. Certain coworkers became very needy during the pandemic. They kept him on his work cell phone all day. I listened to this all day. At least at work he could go to the men's room, go to someone else's office, the lunch room or go outside for a walk. At home, he had to be available at all times! It became excessive. I could tell he wasn't coping well. One Friday afternoon, I had no idea he would walk out the back door into our back garden and shoot himself in the head. He would not seek mental health help.

Mental health is the most important thing that is lacking in this country - and everybody has a mental illness (whether they know it now or find out later). I've had family that shot themselves - and I was close too. Antidepressants don't work for me and the government won't let me take the drugs that help me. After being in prison, and counsellors betraying me, I don't take any mental health meds. Instead, I'm an advocate and activist trying to change the stigma and how we're treated. Take care, everyone, and search out inclusion.

You want to stop mental illness and get people the therapy they need? Well, then you need to de-stigmatize and de-risk doing so. Admitting, you seek therapy could get you lose your guns these days. Deny you job in some fields, which is bit of a problem, when you only have background in these specific fields. And you'd need to tackle the sources of these troubles as well. Remove stressors from society... but that's a discussion our current society refuses to have.
