The coach chant video of Enzo Fernandez with the rest of the Argentine team is a problem. My two cents.

Just wanted to add, that as someone of dual nationality. Fofana (born in France) would have with his background. It can be tough to have a sense of belonging. Not having a strong connection to your parents/grandparents home country (even though you love that nation) and not feeling connected to your birth place when your questioned / doubted to be “French” in this case even though that’s all Wesley knows. It can leave you in a grey area / emptiness. I have that with England / Jamaica often. Those who feel super attached to a nation or there’s less confusion probably don’t get it. But it’s another factor to consider why somebody would be offended/ hurt.

This is why Matisse will be one of the few KZbinrs who will be around for a long, long time. He always approaches talking points with perspective, always adds informed/educated nuance to his viewpoints, and always puts things in their proper context. Even more than that, he doesn’t say things for shock value and doesn’t get up in the drama of a serious issue like that. Keep being a man of reason.

Entitlement, many Argentinians say Enzo was only saying facts, did the players on the bus mention Griezmann who is not of a French heritage, or Theo and Lucas Hernandez who are Spanish, or the French center backs playing for Spain, or Jorginho playing for Italy when he’s Brazilian, when Deco played for Portugal, nobody cares then, it’s only a problem with the players of African descent, it’s really hypocritical, if we use the Argentinian logic, the Albiceleste would be just like the French, there would be no national team because 95% of the players of Italian ancestry

I think you don't understand what you're talking about. All our players were born in Argentina except for Garnacho who was born in Spain. His grandparents' parents came to Argentina, because we received a lot of immigration, especially European, during the war periods. The song is not racist or xenophobic, the song refers to the fact that a large part of the Feancese players are from colonies that France still has in Africa (where it guts the African people, such as by imposing a currency that France itself gives them to stay with a tax on it). The song seeks to visualize that these players are mostly not French and that France steals football power from African teams by stealing them for their own team.

No it's not, that would need to come from Enzo for that to be the focus. Jackson is merely stating that "As a black African, I'v been around Enzo every day for over a year, and I have never seen him display this sort of act of racism". People call others dumb, but don't hate all who can't speak, they use the term P*ssy, or b*tch, without hating all women, gay, without hating all homosexuals. Words come out by mistake in the heat of the moment, focus on how these people treat the group in question in interactions instead.

Being black from a former French colony and having grown up in Latin America, I do understand some of the player's reaction. I also understand Jackson's reaction. The song restates what has been said by many French politicians and part of the population. So for the French players it is a bigger issue , it is very personal. Does that mean that Enzo is racist, I don't think so. Enzo displayed more a lack of maturity and understanding. I was not pleased by the song but not overly offended either; nor surprised. I saw it more as a lack of class which is common in many areas in society. The same way we understand the people offended, we should not disregard Jackson's opinion. Jackson comes from Latin America and has a better understanding of the Argentinian culture. I would say that world wide Jackson attitude might be more common than one might think. Let's hope that all parties involved will sit down and use some empathy before passing judgment one way or the other.

If you claim you grew up in South America like I did, you would know of Argentina's racist past. Argentinas population was one third African descendants before its leaders decided they wanted a white nation and proceeded with the genocide of the Argentinians of African descent. They systematically killed all the African descendants and replaced them with Italian immigrants. So you could say the Argentines are Italians as they came to Argentina in droves for better opportunity just like the Africans did in France. But somehow the Africans born in France are somehow not French but the Italians who migrated to Argentina are Argentinian. It's quite ridiculous to think that these chants were some sort of positive support for French players of African descent. They weren't even playing France so why even be chanting about them after beating Columbia. It's just straight racism and directly in line with pervasive racist though permeating Argentina society.

@@FubuDon Let me explain to you why it is. People never use this logic on white players. Nobody calls out messi for playing for Argentina. Nobody calls out James Rodriguez for playing for Colombia, nobody calls out Griezmann for playing for France, or Giroud, or Lloris. None of these players are ethnically French, yet nobody ever calls them out. How many indigenous players play for Australian teams, North American teams, South American teams? Almost none. Yet none are ever called out. It's always singled out to be black European players with African ethnicity. This is why it's not xenophobic, and it's racism. If the only time it's ever an issue is when it's a black player being discussed, then it goes past being xenophobic. That same team has numerous white players not of French origin, and none of them are ever mentioned, but the black players with African origin are always called out. See what I'm getting at? If this is hard for you to understand, then you simply do not want to understand it.

@@melosivitch I get what you're saying. However before this the argument was that if it wasn't for African players France wouldn't have been enjoying all this success. This wasn't the argument before the world cup about calling out black and white about their origins. The song is offensive, but the way the issue is being addressed might be wrong. One thing is to raise awareness on racist chants, another thing is to take a exec-behind the counter approach to it, with fines, cancellation, shaming, or lay-offs. Controlling speech institutionally was already tried in South America and has led to massive crimes against humanity, so we might be worried about the proportionality of the remedy that might be offered. This is something to be talked in the locker room, and to be retorted by French fans in the pitch with their chants. Chanting in Argentina has a highly cultural connotation, where politically incorrect banter is accepted, but it stops there. You won't find an Argentinean player actually supporting or exerting acts of segregation, since by these chants we also fight against corruption and oppression. Moreover Argentina has also received banter in this sense: gauchos, hungryentinos, poor, drug-addicts, and so on, but we haven't raised the voice saying they amount to racism, because we don't perceive it that way. If anything, this chant is a recognition of rivalry, and the former world champions are more than worthy rivals.

I am Argentine and I am going to give my opinion as someone closer to the soccer culture that Enzo comes from. The main problem with the issue in my opinion is that the ways and means of experiencing soccer in Latin America and the rest of the world are very different and that generates friction and misunderstandings. In Argentina it is very common for soccer songs to be as provocative and offensive as possible in order to annoy the rival, it is something that is widely accepted and here it is taken as the soccer "folklore" of the country. Does that mean it's okay? Not necessarily, many times the lyrics of these songs are very inappropriate (as is the case) and it is perfectly understandable that someone outside of this culture feels offended. In this controversy, Enzo and those who were present with him were wrong, especially because they are the representatives of the national team and they are supposed to set an example. Now, we must also take into account the context, they had just emerged as champions, possibly high on alcohol and in the football context that I mentioned, therefore classifying a player as racist for a football song that I am sure does not reflect What he really thinks seems very disproportionate to me. On the other hand, it makes me indignant that many come to speak to us with moral superiority when many of those who criticize what happened did the same or worse things at other times. Sorry if something was not understood, I used Google Translate :)

So this is Argentine culture! It is good that people question this. History shows us that my black ancestors were systematically decimated in Argentina, unlike in any other part of the Americas. Argentina has always been the most racist country in Latin America. Check the history of the country if you don't believe me. Hence, racism has been normalised. It is high time that those who feel these are part of culture be made to understand that this can not be considered right. It is more than the Argentinian players. Just find out what happened to a high-ranking Argentinian official who condemned this and was asked to resign. Sometimes, we need to examine culture as it is not always right and just a way for masking bigotry, inequality, injustice, and our own ineptitude and lack of self and humanity.

Historically, this country received people from all over and welcomed them when they needed it most and we never closed the door to immigrants who come to our soil for a better quality of life. We even provide them with health and public education like any citizen born in Argentina (something that only happens in this country). Through multiculturalism like France which I’m fully for we have a national team full of players who can play for other countries not just black players either white aswell. Rice grealish I think kane aswell are Irish not by birth but through blood. Same with Guehi Saka Mainoo Sterling. Them English didn’t have a problem calling them black this and that last time round & that doesn’t speak for everyone. I know it’s players vs fans and it’s completely different but I agree you can’t tell someone when or how to be offended.

Was Enzo in the right for what happened? No. Is he in the wrong? Yes. Is Enzo racist, absolutely not and that is a fact. This is a mistake and we all do make them. The reaction from some of the teammates from France is ridiculous. How about being a good teammate by being on the field and contributing positively to the success of the team, something that you are paid for? How about having a conversation directly with the teammate rather than throwing your weight around on social media and then you come and put up stinkers or even remained off the field for God knows what. Are the teammates and clubs of the other Argentinian national team members doing the same?

In no way do i condone what Enzo and the Argentina squad did but I’m curious why you didn’t talk about the France squad basically calling Messi a cheat in their song after they won the World Cup!

I believe this could have potentially sparked the rivalry. Argentina took it to a whole new level but I think the initial song should be discussed

What I find funny is how come you people didn’t had this much energy when the English fans racially abused saka and rashford?? Where was this outrage?? Is it because it was a foreign that hurt more? Is it the fact there’s hypocrisy? What about the racial abuse vini gets in Spain? lol 😂

It WAS a massive story, but it is also different. Coworkers Vs. Fans. You can't control what an entire group of random fans does on the internet. But you can absolutely control what professional athletes say about their own teammates.

How are the really Argentine?. So many of the current team and past players could easily have played for Italy. Where is Mac Allister last name from?

Think it is quite relevant that some of the Argentinian players like Messi and Mac Allister were not on the bus as has been reported by journalists in Argentina….can’t tar them all with the same brush when they weren’t even there…that’s not fair either

Disclaimer: Enzo was 100% in the wrong and needs to act like an adult and own up to it. The list of players rightly upset will not forgive him overnight/maybe not at all. I did want to touch on your take that “Jackson isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. Regardless of how much this guy gets memed for not having consistent form etc, to minimize his opinion as someone that 1. Seems to not believe Enzo truly feels this way 2. Is from an African nation and might believe African football as a whole is hurt by so many players choosing to represent other nations outside of Africa is disrespectful to him as a human being. If fofana is allowed to express himself freely than the same should be allowed for Jackson without instantly jumping to “he’s not that smart”. These players are all kids who have been privileged to make a ton of money at such a young age however, as a group they need to grow. (This is one of the pitfalls of having such a young team that lacks leadership). I hope Enzo does the right thing and addresses the group sincerely. What comes from it will interesting to see. Coyb

°This is a balanced and intelligent take on this unfortunate incident from Enzo and made worse by his father. Ignorant and offensive acts have to be condemned no matter who and what. So, well done to you on that part, Mattisse. I would really feel horrible if an Arsenal player did such a madness, knowing he would have to come into training with players he would have disparaged on instagram. I don't know how I would feel about such a player going forward. Great video as well. Empeccably clean.

I’m so glad he recorded that video because now we can see people for who they truly are. Some people are on the side of “He’s right, they’re not French they’re African”. At the same time of saying this these people identify Enzo as Argentinian and not by his European ancestral heritage. Other people play ignorant saying “what’s the problem”. The arrogance of telling someone “no you’re not from there.” It’s basically saying “I don’t care where you were born or where you were raised. If you’re black you cannot identify as European”. The reality is that so many people believe in white supremacist ideology and play the victim when they’re called out.

unnecessary? ✅️ racist? ❌️ if anything, there should be MORE outrage over the transgender part than the Angola/Cameroon part because at least that is not even true IN THE SLIGHTEST for the French squad 😂😂

yeah, it's not racist. just target only the African players and not talk about players like Griezmann and Theo Hernández who obviously not of French origin, in our victory over Colombia, who had nothing to do with the black African (French) players. you people are honestly braindead.

Very well put. I enjoyed the way this was structured to help people understand the context before addressing the actual topic. It can be so exhausting to always have to be the bigger person. As a black person when someone says some offensive and you call them out people, often, get defensive and tell those who are offended to calm down because they have said sorry and it’s in the past. But like you said why should anyone tell another person how to react to something that has offended them. The state of the Argentine squad tells you how much racism exists there and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a “no blacks” sign over the door to the national team. I hope many people see this video and are inspired to do better when it comes to standing up against racism and other injustice they witness
