I’m confused, so it’s like the looking left is a distraction from whining? Basically my dog is **dramatique** if I could get him not to whine about literally everything this would be amazing

Looking left is part of the trick she's teaching. The whining is probably based in frustration and then if reinforced the dog learns to do it for treats. To avoid reinforcing whining she's using a high rate of reinforcement where she reinforces as soon as the dog does something she likes and she's also reinforcing in different spots so the dog doesn't get frustrated when the reinforcement isn't in one exact spot. The trick I was training was to look left- like a cute trick to shake the head. The whining began because he was confused and didn’t understand why i did not give a treat for the first head shake and instead asked for more before the marker. So to make it easier I started making the marker happen and the treats happen in different locations so that he wasn’t seeing it happening in the same precise place that when it was not there that other meant he was wrong. I know what you mean. I have a whiny dog. It’s very much personality based. Of course you can work on it but some dogs just don’t whine. I have six dogs so I have one whiny dog. She doesn’t whine during training, but she does whine a lot in every day life in different situations, based on her anxiety. So when I got my last three dogs, I made sure to not get a dog that is whiny because I thought it would be a little too much for me. One is enough 😅

I am interested to know how you would handle whining outside of a training session

I will try to figure out why the dog is whining. Because they feel frustrated by something or perhaps they are feeling anxious, and then I tried to address the cause. For anxiety, if the dog likes, or has been conditions to massage, I will use massage to help them feel calmer. For frustration, I would just make the step smaller to learning to wait for something or retrain the behavior in training sessions. Safe for example if the dog is whining to go outside for a walk after a walk, you could work waiting by the door, when your dog is finding it easier at first

@@kikopup my dog whines every morning as we get ready to go out for a walk and he also whines when someone is at the front door. The big issue I need to address is whining before leaving for our walk. Do you have a video on that?

You can still do it :) also you can go back and pretend you have never trained certain behaviors before that your dog whines during and spend at least two weeks I would spend more reinforcing at a high rate so they forget that they even whined and then slowly building back to what you wanted

I'm struggling with how to address puppy going apeshit every time the wind blows past the door. I don't have anyone to help practice deliver driver experience either...

You could set up a fan near the door that might make the sound less loud and set up a barrier so your puppy isn’t right next to the door when it happens and in between you could work on just random things happening outside the front door so any noise outside the front door means nothing. so you could have a family member or friend go out the door and make noises and as they make the noise you give your dog a treat for not reacting. You can also have your friend or family member pretend to be a delivery person and boxes and put them down in front of your door.

how about whining for reactivity, anxiety or over-arousal ?? no other undesirable behaviors just the whining. i bet if i worked on calm sessions we could get it. he gets amped up so easily. delivering treats slower and being calm helps
