Adelaide St Update: Fully Protected Left Turn Signals & Bike Signals Activated For Adelaide @ Bay St

This is a video update regarding all the new fully protected left turn signals, and bicycle signals along Adelaide St.

Always nice to see fully-protected left turns added, especially in downtown areas! Is the left-turn just fixed-time? Or is it actuated?

Yeah! Always so good to see! Don't worry, the left turn phase is callable and is skipped if there are no vehicles in the left turn lane. If the left turn phase was to lag, then it would come on as "fixed time", even if there's nobody in the left turn lane.

@@jacksonbourrettransportati9852Nice that it’s actuated! We have some protected right & left turns across cycle tracks in Victoria, but they’re all fixed-time which is mildly annoying! I mean, it could still be actuated even if it was lagging.

@@WestCoastTrafficSignals Just curious how can lagging left turns be actuated? Wouldn't it mean the signals would have to know if someone is in the left turn lane before the flashing hand countdown starts? I know it's much easier to make a lagging left turn actuated if there are no pedestrian signals, because it would just simply be a bicycle signal amber lock detection to determine if the left turn signal turns green, but with pedestrian signals how can lagging left turns be actuated?

@@jacksonbourrettransportati9852 There would probably have to some logic where, if the countdown is already underway, then the left-turned will have to wait. But if a left-turner arrived in time, then the conflicting walk would be shorter and the left-turn would service after the pedestrian countdown. There’s an intersection in Langford with a actuated lagging left-turn, which Kyle filmed last year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGOlpHibfseiic0si=SUD4f5KAfuz1SQAT There’s also a few in Saanich: McKenzie at Quadra, and McKenzie at Shelbourne. @@jacksonbourrettransportati9852 You could always start the countdown at the normal time and end the eastbound green at the end of FDW, and if there's a left turning car it serves east side crosswalk (and bike signal if present) with the eastbound left. If there's no left turning car it just goes directly into the ordinary north-south phase.
