My tip is to return things immediately if they don't suit or you don't love them, don't sit on them and miss the return window. When taking inspiration from someone else, I look at each piece of clothing they're wearing, usually it's the silhouette I like, not the particular item of clothing.

I check the tag session from an online brand, yes, including accessories, as Adeline mention if I find a flaw, i.e., no pockets, it gets culled.
@mauishopgirllАй бұрын
I would add to try on the item, including accessories/bags, with other items right away to ensure it works with existing wardrobe and body type. I do this within a day and sometimes find although I love an item, it doesn’t work for me or doesn’t work as well as something else I already have. If it doesn’t work it immediately gets packaged for return by mail or into my “out” area to be taken to the car (and a to do added to the calendar).

I sometimes have two items of the same style when I find out that the first one is something that I truly love and that goes with almost wverything when I experienced that this certain kind of item is hard to fund but mostly I want to keep the second one almost untouched because I want to have the opportunity later as well. Luckily that only goes for basic tops and one or two pullovers.

I don't dismiss impulse shopping because I have found pieces that I love and rewear constantly. The last one is a long black pleated skirt in a synthetic fabric (but nice!) I wear it in every season, mix it with pieces from different styles, I take it on my trips as it is wrinkle free!!! I got it in a thrift store for peanuts! I have other items like that (but I must confess I made some mistakes as well)....

I have to say the BF and pushy sales season do quite the opposite to me: they completely turn me off. Went to a TKMaxx today to sense check how I feel. I never felt as uninspired in my life. I buy the same style in different colors because I'm very picky. If I find three styles out of 50 of the same type of item that I like on me, that's a lot. So when I find a style of top that I'm mad about, I'll try to buy it in every color that works for me. Shoes, pants, blazers, sweaters, same thing. Since I usually keep my clothes for years, I still end up with a very good variety. Honestly, I wouldn't care even if I didn't have a lot of variety. As time goes on, I need to feel well dressed and comfortable more than I need variety.

Everything you said is spot-on! My struggle is that I get really bored with my clothes over time. They tell me to quit buying cheaper, lower quality clothes and invest in higher end but less. It’s a catch-22 for me!! So lately I’ve been recycling frequently so buying pre-loved clothes is best for me. Unbelievable what you find that others have discarded! I just bought a 100% lambswool red cropped jacket made in Italy brand new for 30€ in Italy at a pre-loved store along with a 100% like-new cashmere large throw blanket for the same price.

My Mum always said never buy something if the only reason you're buying it is because it's on sale. "It's not a good deal if you won't wear it." I've heard that ringing in my ears the past few weeks with all this Black Friday hoopla. I've actually been deleting a lot of the sale emails without reading them to stick to my guns and not add anything that I don't need and that isn't a total Wow piece.
@storksandstarks7073Ай бұрын
The wishlist thing is so on point. As I get deeper and deeper into the world of fashion, I realize that 1) good things are not cheap 2) and if I keep buying stuff just because it's on sale, I won't get the sense of fulfillment that a curated, well-thought out look will give me. So a wishlist REALLY helps me focus, and then the actual purchase and the fact that I get it cheaper is secondary - if you think about it, buying a number of things on sale is not necessarily cheaper than just buying one nice thing. I am shopping less, but cherishing what I buy more.

Great point! Sometimes I'll get a couple variations just because I can't decide which one. Especially if ordering online & on sale! Then after a while I'm like why do I need all these different loafers? Sneakers? baggy jeans? argyle sweaters? on and on. I refrained from doing that for about two years now, but I made an exception with all the cropped blouses out now, as they will be harder to find later, and being petite, Most blouses & sweaters are TOO LONG and so unflattering. I also doubled up on two pairs (same color!) of leggings that I can wear lounging at home, to bed (they're slippery enough i don't get tangled in the blankets), to work, to shop or going out!

The blue shirts..the first one was obviously different, the other 3, all looked the same, so I'd pick one and discard the other 2, the brown and green are obviously different, so I'd keep them to get a different look. Most people I watch recommend clothing brands that are for wealthy people. It makes the shopping experience that much more frustrating. Sezane is for wealthy people. One button down shirt is $200. That's just ridiculously outrageous. I can get a very similar one at Target/Macy's for less than that.

That sweater is so beautiful, could you get it altered instead? I love the idea of cutting off the head haha! That’s so funny but it seems so effective!!! For me perfectionism is one of the biggest temptations for over-consuming so I try to remember that if I already own it close enough is good enough. I can alter it, dye it, or just be patient and wait for it to be worn out before I replace it. And sometimes it’s ugly but it keeps me warm is also good enough. Perfectionism is for shopping, gratitude is for what I already have! I had that backwards for a while

The red jumper is a knit, if you cut the bottom to rehem it would just unravel. Knits are much harder to alter and you need to be very experienced.
