This is one of the most beautiful and theologically elevating Christian hymns. The early church knew how central the Holy Trinity is to the Faith, and how central the Lord Jesus Christ is to our salvation. Gloria in excelsis Deo. From a Protestant pastor.

The author and Composer was King John IV of Portugal in 1645. Erroneous and subsequently, it was spread as being composed by other authors. Of course, these authors, having been born after the oldest manuscript of this work, can not be considered true authors, nor is there any expert who now defend it. This manuscript comes from the Royal Library of the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa (Portugal) By the way, it was known in the english royal court at the time, as the "Portuguese Hymn"

A king who composed a Christmas carol? Wonders never cease! I must admit I don't actually believe any king can possibly compose such timeless musical masterpiece. I think the king has ordered someone else to compose this wonderful song and then he simply took the credits for it! Kings have no sense of music at all!

It has always been common for composers to create derivatives or adaptations of previous works, variations on a theme. Recent (within the last century) copyright law has permitted composers to copyright these derivative works as their own works. If you listen to this version [kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZfGi596hMZmqLc] for example you'll here a lot of contrapuntal voices in a version that could have been copyrighted even though the original tune could not have been. As there is no known manuscript of this work attributed to King John IV, who was indeed an avid composer, and the music didn't surface until the mid-nineteenth century, it's unlikely he was the actual composer. A stirring work no matter who wrote it.

funny of you to say, since high-class Romans themselves preferred to talk in Greek. Latin was for the people, so to say.

Nice version, but not my favorite. In my opinion this song needs more contrast between different passages in organ playing, varying mostly between medium and powerful, it also sound good to momentarily leave out the bass line before the powerful section. It can be really breathtaking for me.
