Of course EJ's one of the finest songwriters/singers/performers ever. But his band is pretty remarkable, too. Thanks for sharing this live version of Rocket Man, Harri. I've been a fan since he first came out and I haven't seen this before.

I think Elton hit his peak in the 70s. Elton says he spent the 80s in drugged out stupor. He got a 2nd life when he did the music for Disney's The Lion King. It brought Elton to a whole new and younger generation and now he is beloved by all.

I've been hooked on Elton John since 7th grade when I first heard Your Song and Take Me to the Pilot. I think this may be the earliest song you've reacted to so you've missed some of the early 70s. My two favorite albums from that time are Elton John, his second, and Madman Across the Water, his fourth. Levon and Tiny Dancer are great songs from that one. Most of my favorites are before 1975, and through the album Caribou. My husband and I went to see him in Denver in 2010 for our anniversary. Since it was a "big" occasion we spent the money to get tickets on the 6th row. It was a fabulous experience.

I saw him in his absolute prime in the early ‘70s, and again in 2005 at his Las Vegas show (took my dear Mom, who loved him.) In the ‘70s he was the rock & roll Liberace. He came out in a full length mink coat, about 12” platform heels, and his grand piano had a full length mink cover. Huge glasses with “ELTON” flashing around in lights. He took off his mink coat, had a gold pants and jacket outfit with “Hercules” written down the side of each leg. And then he played the most magnificent concert, not just a real showman but a consummate musician. He was great in 2005 too, not flamboyant like in his younger days, but still fantastic musically. Very fortunate to have seen him both young and older.

If the piano was turned so the player was facing the audience, most of them wouldn't be able to see much more than his face. Peeping over the top. I think on the current farewell tour the piano spins round several times but as it's not coming back to London for over a year I can't be sure of that. (Anxiously cuddles his tickets.) The 70s were possibly his creative peak - the amount of output was amazing. Personally I like his 80s work and his 90s work and his 00s work and his 10s work and his 20s work very much. I've sometimes seen people say to reactors, 'Don't bother watching or listening to anything written after the 70s.' This just means, 'I stopped listening during the 70s because my friends said he wasn't cool'. But now it's come full circle (of life) and he had two #1s in 2021.

Usually, the piano player is not the main focus, and with the piano being so big they put it off to the side so the guitar players and singer have room to do their thing. I guess even the star piano players like Elton want to leave room for the other members of the band, which is good. As for why the piano is sideways, the audience wants to see the piano player play if they are the star attraction, not hidden behind a huge musical instrument.
@RJS1974

He also needs to see his band so he can direct them as they play. He gives visual cues to them when to end a song, etc.

To answer your piano question, it’s because with a grand piano taking in account it’s size and height the person playing would be too far in the back for the audience to get a good view of so this way they can see the whole person instead of just his head lol. On the other hand with a keyboard, it’s usually facing the audience. It’s really just a matter of optics.
@niccolean
@niccolean 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Harri, hope your holidays were very happy. I think the reason they seat piano players that way is for the audience to see them better. Just think if they were sitting facing forward, all you’d see is the top of their head, maybe an occasional full face. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong.

Harri? The thing about Elton John, is that that extra Jam they all did at the end of Rocketman? That was 100% spontaneous and unrehearsed. Dee, Nigel and Davey and Elton were almost telepathic and they knew where Elton was leading them.... and it was usually straight to Funkytown. These 4 men were the best harmony section in Rock.

This was a great rendition I hadn't heard before. Thanks for reacting to it Harri! Incidentally, the pianist/composer Franz Liszt pioneered facing the piano side-ways to the audience when he invented the solo recital format so as to enable them to be able to watch his hands as he played. Liszt modeled himself after violinist Niccolo Paganini, to perfect a style of what he liked to call "transcendental virtuosity." He believed that the visual dimension of his playing was just as important as the music itself. Prior to him pianists would play either with their backs to the audience or with the piano between them and the pianist, with the pianist facing forward. Liszt up-ended tradition.

Harri, I love your reactions to your music videos. I especially love the music from the late 50's you have been reacting to. My wife and I both grew up in the the late 50's and early 60's. We love all of genre's of music, but especially that era. If possible would you please react to a song "I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos. This is our favorite song from that era. No one writes, or writes songs with such pure emotion. The late 50's and throughout the 60's the artist had pure, raw talent that is seldom matched today. Thank you 😊.

It includes "Its Gonna Ne a long long time" from THIS song. And nice help out on this year's charity Saiuage Roll song Elton ! Coked up Elton was a great performer. A little too fast at times, but nails it on this one. I really like the Daniel performance from this concert as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKmrc4GenNiprNk In the late 80s, after he signed with Roland pianos, he went digital and faced the crowd with his piano for a number a years.
@robdaviesprogm

I think it's better to have the piano facing forward. Otherwise, the player would just have this "nine-foot plank" as Elton has described the piano many times, in the way, and no one in the crowd would see anything, especially if you're playing a stadium and the most expensive seats are generally on the floor. By 1984, Elton was on a commercial high, especially in the UK, where this concert took place. He was having renewed success with singles in the US as well, with "Sad Songs (Say So Much) being his second Top 5 single in the past two years, though his albums weren't selling as well there as they were in his native Britain. Some have theorized that the lackluster performance of his albums was due to David Geffen, the president of his US record label, pulled back on promoting Elton's records after the star declined to attend the premiere of the Broadway musical Cats, which Geffen was a big financial backer of. Elton's commercial peak was undeniably during the period of 1972-76, when he scored seven straight #1 albums in the US, and six #1 US singles (with nearly 20 Top 20 singles, all but two of which went into the Top 10). However, Elton is one of those rare artists who has had a number of different successful periods, not just one. While none have ever reached the stratosphere of the mid-'70s, he has enjoyed success in one form or another throughout. The '80s were definitely a low point in his personal life, but his career never faltered, even in moments of true adversity, such as when he nearly lost his voice forever, and a British tabloid sought to destroy his reputation.

HarriBest? Elton has had at least 6 comebacks, 1980-1985 was his first comeback, he was back with Bernie and the old band and making hit albums again... So he was at his second peak here, then he got sober and 3 more hit albums, third peak, Then Lion King... on and on

The piano and the rest of the bad are offset so they can see all the pianist's motions since he is essentially the conductor. This is a standard setup even in classical music when there are piano trios, quartets and so on. Meaning a piano with other instruments, not 2, 3, 4 or 5 pianos.

Here is a 1972 performance of the same song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJC0i5huj5tprpo There isn't a lot of qualitative difference except I would say he doesn't have to push as hard on his voice to hit the high notes. By the late 80s though Elton's voice had gone down a bit more so he had to perform songs with the key shifted down a bit. His voice still today sounds good, just more bass.
