Note that Knopfler plays 1. Fingerstyle, which is almost unheard of in this tempo music. 2. He is actually naturally lefthanded, but he plays the godly fingerstyle on a right hand guitar. 3. Notice how little he is actually looking down on the guitar, even in the hardest parts. He is the ultimate "talent", like he was born with a guitar between his hands and his baby "chord" already plugged into an amp.

Knopfler and one of his guitar heroes, fingerstyle master Chet Atkins, were once being interviewed during the time period they created the incredible album "Neck and Neck" together. Mark was talking about the fact he is naturally left handed and his left hand (the picking hand) is stronger than the right (the fret fingering hand). This allows him to sound like he's using a pick, but in fact, it's a strong thumb and fingertips (nails). Chet jokingly said, and it helps that Mark has a thumb the size of a banana.

Lindes became a full-time member of Dire Straits at the end of 1980, shortly after the release of the group's third album, Making Movies. He replaced original co-founding member and rhythm guitarist David Knopfler. Lindes toured with Dire Straits while they were promoting Making Movies and remained with the band while they recorded their fourth album, 1982's Love Over Gold. Lindes was also with the band for the EP titled ExtendedancEPlay released in early 1983, which included the hit single “Twisting by the Pool”. Also during 1982 and 1983, Dire Straits’ frontman Mark Knopfler was involved with composing the music score for David Puttnam's film Local Hero, in which Lindes also performed. Lindes toured with Dire Straits for their 1982-1983 Love over Gold Tour. The band's double live album Alchemy: Dire Straits Live was a recording of excerpts from the final two concerts from that tour at London's Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983, featuring Lindes, and was released in March 1984.

Got to actually meet Mark in the 90s because my father made all the storage trunks for their speakers and equipment for their tour that year. He was just an amazingly down to earth and humble guy, he gave me an autographed copy of the Princess Bride soundtrack which he also performed and produced. I never really knew he was one the greatest guitarists in the world until a number of years later when I was old enough to comprehend how amazingly talented he is.

For that concert they took another drummer, Terry Williams. Story tells that at that very night show, Terry's father was at the audience to see his son onstage for the first time ever. And Terry , he just stole the show. Of course, the Knopfler's guitar solo is fantastic, but so is the drumming...

David Knopfler (born 27 December 1952) is a British musician. He was born in Scotland, but raised in Blyth, near Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Together with his older brother Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers, he founded the rock band Dire Straits in 1977, serving as rhythm guitarist on their first two albums. After quitting the band in 1980 during the recording of their third album, Knopfler embarked upon a solo career as a recording artist. Knopfler initially created smaller record labels, publishing companies, and indie labels.

I can never get enough Dire Straits. They are great together and of course Mark is a one of a kind guitar player. He makes a connection with the audience. Wish they would have showed some good close ups of his picking style in this video. He does so much more than picks with his fingers. He deadens strings to stop them when he wants and other things to make it just the way he wants it. No noise or clutter. Great reaction!

I love the timings of this performance so much! When they're doing the bridge between the solos, it feels almost like it's going on too long - but just when you start feeling that, they increase the tempo and start building up. What's even cooler, is that they take the build-up juuuuuuust to the point where you're starting to think that maybe there won't be a pay-off... and then the pay-off comes. They were so on point with this performance that it's kind of scary.

A spiritual experience that leaves you speechless indeed. Of all the great talented artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, Hendrix, Springsteen, and even all the classical masters, Dire Straits was on another level. The whole band. Those drums, those keyboards, the bass. I feel like Knopfler was such a master, that he doesn't need to play lightningfast solos anymore in order to put feeling into his music. He has been playing music all his life. They were already great when I was kid. And now over 50 years later, he is still bringing out great albums. Even if Knopfler and his band were the only musicians in the world, they filled my life with so many great songs, that I wouldn't need all those other artists. MK forever !

The first time I heard this version of the song was when I bought the Live Alchemy cassette in VA Beach in early 1984. I put it in the cassette deck in my yellow 1979 Mercury Bobcat. I had a Pioneer Cassette in the dash, Kenwood equalizer, 10" Kicker Woofers in the rear, 4" Kenwood Mid-Range in the doors, and Jensen super-tweeters on the dash, all hooked up through a couple of crossovers to a Carver M-240 Power Amplifier. After that last drum crash, what the video doesn't show is the sudden eruption of the loudest, enthusiastic, prolonged applause I've ever heard at a concert. This performance blew the crowd away and they responded like this was the best performance ever witnessed on a stage. Mark's brother, David, had left the band during the recording of Love Over Gold, the album that preceded this tour. He was replaced by Hal Lindes, a young American guitar player.

Recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, London, July 1983. Alchemy released 1984. The song was their first UK chart success in 1979.

The version is from a live album called Alchemy Live, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in March 1983. The blond guitarist is not his brother but Hal Lindes. David Knopfler left in 1980ish. Tunnel of Love is another masterpiece. The whole Alchemy Live is brilliant.

Nit picking I know but I think you'll find it was July '83, the Alchemy Live album was released March '84 :)

I saw them live in 1983, not at the Odeon London but in Australia for their Love over Gold tour & it was the best live performance I had ever seen. This performance was the last 2 concerts played at the London Odeon for that 1983 tour. I loved their long play extended songs & how they played them. Better than their studio albums & that is saying something about a group when they are that good live. x

I believe this was recorded in Newcastle, England. The whole concert was brilliant. Also watch Brothers in Arms, the song and the cd.

Live at Hammersmih Odeon, London. Marks brother left the band a year earlier and was replaced by Hal Lindes,, he done his performance justice. Pick Whithers also left the band a year before which Terry Williams filled in. Easily the best live show by ANY band imo. Never will a live album sound as good as this with just PURE genious sound. There are good ones but they wont be around in 500yrs time !! My hometown band, (totaly unbiased) as is over 200mill viewers in 2013. Timeless❤❤❤

Mark was playing like this in the 70s-80s everyday!! I remember the 1985 wembley arena concert, is saw a documentary and Bob Geldfof begged Knofler to come over to the stadium as someone pulled out, so Dire straits performed as the arena then walked across the road to the stadium to play a live set at the 1985 LIVE AID wembley Stadium

It's 2023 and hard to believe this video is from forty years ago. He's 73 now , 74 in August 2023. You better start researching upcoming performances for him before it's too late. I'd love to see him. He's slowed down now forty years after this concert but he's still brilliant. A brilliant drummer in Terry, great rythm guitar by Hal, Excellent bass by John and a beautifully classically trained piano player in Alan plus obviously mark. This is or was not an ordinary band that played well but a band full of musical geniuses in a very rare band.

Mark Knopfler also has an extensive solo catalogue from after he broke up Dire Straits. A lot of really good songs to check out. You can try What it is, Speedway at Nazareth, 5:15 am, Song for Sonny Liston and a ton more. I've seen every concert tour he's done since 1992. He doesn't have the energy you see here any more, but the musical craftsmanship has only gotten better

I'm from Brazil and moved to L A in January 1980 . Already was a big D Straits fan , came October they had a concert at The Roxy on Sunset Blvd . During that time never heard not even once them on any radio station , KLMS and KLOS were the two rock station . Anyway few days before the concert saw a little add at the L A Times Sunday paper , was leaving with my American girl friend which I married . Asked her and a bunch of people if they knew who they were , didn't have a car and sure could not miss that chance . My future mother in law lend me her car and there my girl and I went to see it . Thought if people don't know them and on the add was written : Tickets available at the box office . Got there parked the car and was sold out , for some reason stayed there cursing myself . Jessica next to me saying let's go , was about to walk back when I heard ,hey,,hey. The man at the box office with his arm out of the booth , here my friends are not coming have two tickets and just gave to me . Was a table meters away from the stage as we sat they were in the end of the first music..Once upon a time in the west,

Stay with the Alchemy Live & check out "Tunnel of Love" & " Romeo & Juliet" along with "Telegraph Road" & " Brothers in Arms "! Had Alchemy Live on a cassette tape (if you know what that is!) in the car that was played so much that it wore out! You will listen to Dire Staits now for life! For some Mark Knofler solo stuff Check out "Song for Sonny Liston " "Done with Bonaparte " & "Postcards from Paraguay " FROM The AVO sessions! Finally check out "Sailing to Philadelphia " "What it is Now " & "Boom like That" Have fun!

It's not his brother. They split a while before this and was replaced by Hal Lindes on Guitar. The original studio recording only had mark Knopfler, John Illsley on bass David on guitar and Pick Withers on drums (replaced at this time by Terry Williams). This band also has two keyboard players.
