Jaw to the floor. Look at them go when the groove sets in, in between the heavenly beautiful slow parts. The lyrics. He's not in the top 10. He's got his own separate list. Perfection. I love the smile on his face when he's playing. He was such a young boy back then, full of energy, giving his best to make this world a better place. That's real music.

The song was written on the way to a concert in Detroit / Michigan. The Telegraph Road is a highway in Detroit.
He writes, plays and sings his own music and that is why he is unbeatable... a genius all the way... Been on four of his concerts...Very lucky but not lucky enough to "feel" the Dire Straits era... Anyway, "Tunnel of love" is THE ONE you should go for... For me it is the best song ever written and played. Believe it or not, this song is helping me more in my life than most people do...

One of many wonderful things about Mark Knopfler is the sheer variety of his guitar playing. He has that remarkable signature sound, but he doesn't just stop there. Listen to Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Marble Town, the Neck & Neck album he recorded with the legendary Chet Atkins, his movie soundtracks like Local Hero , The Princess Bride and Altimira... every one so very different but all very, very special. And that's just a tiny sample of his extensive catalogue of work.

Also think of the many duets he has played with other guitar greats like Chet Atkins
@martinharvey23903 жыл бұрын
He also wrote and performed on Tina Turner's Private Dancer. Also worth a listen is a fellow Geordie Jimmy Nail's song called Big River, he plays on that too
@jjc54073 жыл бұрын
Actually he didn't perform on Private Dancer, although the rest of Dire Straits did. Jeff Beck played lead guitar including what Mark apparently described as 'the world's second ugliest guitar solo'! Jimmy Nail is among the cast members who provide backing vocals on Mark's 'Why Aye Man' the theme song for the revival of the TV show Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

Mark produced and played on Bob Dylan's Infidels album and toured with him just a few years ago. As far as where Mark ranks amongst guitarists, I'd rank him number one just ahead of Dave Gilmour in terms of who I most like to listen to. As a songwriter I'd rank him ahead of Dylan by a country mile.

@@HarriBestReactions Lol. I'm serious though. Mark's lyrical ability is off the charts. He writes about such a diverse range of topics and has an incredible ability to condense stories about people, places and events into a handful of verses. He doesn't write songs, he crafts them. Every word is chosen with absolute precision.

Telegraph Road in Michigan outside of Detroit was also known as the Dixie Highway. Dixie Highway went all the way to the South. This was the route the Southerners took to go north to find work in the Auto plants around Detroit. It was also referred to as "Bloody Telegraph" because it was a 3-lane highway with the middle lane used for passing so there was a large number of head-on collisions.

With Dire Straits I think the studio versions are almost always the best ones. Also check out Tunnel of Love from the Making Movies album which ends with one of the greatest guitar solos in rock.

I agree Knopfler is better than Clapton, but Duane allman was better than Clapton. I disagree with the studio versions. I think Dire straits are a much better live band. The way that they can dress the song in many different layers live and change certain sections is just part of the genius. Love over gold and Brothers in Arms are amazing albums but their live performances are what give them the wow factor. Tunnel of love and romeo and juliet are great songs...

Thank you for sharing your reaction to this song. It always makes me happy to see someone discover music that I love and to see them enjoy it as much as I do. This version of Telegraph Road is among my favorite live performances ever. Regarding Mark Knopfler, "best" guitarist is too subjective to argue, but he is my favorite guitarist and it's not really close. The man paints pictures with the sounds he creates. And yes, I sometimes hear a bit of Dylan in his singing as well.
@mikegray87762 жыл бұрын
Nice reaction, fella !! To answer your question, many of us regard Mark Knopfler as the most expressive, emotive guitarist of all time. The "best" is of course a subjective judgment - and everyone has their own "best" - but I am now 67 and I have seen perhaps 400 different bands including some incredible guitar players ..... Eric Clapton, Martin Barre, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Paul Kossoff ....... but Mark is the only one who can actually make me cry with the tone, texture and sheer poignancy of his playing. And you are absolutely right about the Dylan-esque quality of both his lyrics and his vocal style. If you haven't found it already, you MUST listen to the LIVE version of "Brothers In Arms" - Mandela Concert, Wembley 1988 [ kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXW8Y36Vm8RoY9U ] I know you get it - and if you make it through that with dry eyes - I will be amazed ! .... Even Mark was emotional as he played it (at both 2:08 and 7:39)!! I realise you've already listened to the studio version - but this is on a different level - with Eric Clapton joining the band, and playing in front of 80,000 spectators !!! The best and most emotional 8 minutes of music you will EVER hear - guaranteed !!

Mark is number one guitarist in my mind. Yes sure there's plenty of wonderfully talented guitar players out the but very few of marks Calibre. His guitar nit only makes heavenly music but it really does seem to cry and sing. His voice is perfect for his storytelling. Most his songs are stories and he doesn't sing in the regular sense but talks his way through the song with a little singing and ut makes his song really get the story across and if you add his guitar to is vocals its almost as if theyre two parts of a single entity which i guess they are. But Telegraph Road Alchemy Live is by far the best version and i deliberately avoided watching it for 39 years, thinking the studio version was best and it would be heresy to listen to anything else. Oh man was i wrong and i now watch or listen to it about a dozen times a day and never get sick if it. Hell ive been listening to the studio version since it first came out and every day for 39 years. Now i dont listen to it but i play this instead.ps please excuse typos but my finger is too big to type accurately 😂 I also feel that Alan Clarks piano and keyboard playing is superb and central to the song. It has a lot more impact in this song and at times as his move from piano to synth ir organ and then it fades perfectly to blend with marks guitar to a point its almost impossible to tell where he stops and marks guitar starts. A bit like a hive mind this band has as they are so smooth and blend perfectly. Oh and yes i can see or hear the similarities to Dylan too .

Only my opinion... but I suspect you listened to this version because the live Sultans of Swing is better than the album version. I think the reverse is true of Telegraph Road... All the best songs allow the listener to interpret what they will. For me Telegraph Road is about the optimism of expansion compared with the reality it often creates down the line. The late seventies and early eighties in the UK were about urban decay and the loss of industry certainly in the North East where the band originates. The optimism of colonial expansion and the Industrial Revolution had long subsided. Someone mentioned Bruce Springsteen... very apt

No, he's more like Leonard Cohen with Springsteen lyrics. Very reminiscent of Thunder Road. I had my own Telegraph Road in the suburbs of Montreal. Where we had pioneered or way out into the fallow farmer's fields then jsut subdivided and the main road to the new freeway was just a two lane country road. We were at the edge of the forest and the road plus another one to go west went to six lanes. The forest is mostly developed now but there has been some nature park reserve along the river.
