The genius of this song is how “joyful” the music itself is - yet how somber and sad the subject matter and lyrics are. That was the brilliance of Doug Hopkins. He was one of the all-time great American songwriters, right up there with Westerberg and Petty.

There is something about the lead singer's voice that especially appeals to me. The voice is similar to Snow Patrol and "Chasing Cars". Many great songs from this group. Next?: "Follow You Down".

Thank you, Harri...nice to see you digging the Gin Blossoms. Thanks for reacting to it! Sadly, their co-founder and lead guitarist, Doug Hopkins, had suffered from chronic depression his entire life and he battled alcoholism. He became despondent after the bands success and the acclaim they were receiving. After receiving a Gold record for their #1 hit, "Hey Jealousy", he hung it up on a wall. Two weeks later he took it down and destroyed it, and nine days later he purchased a .38 caliber pistol. On December 5, 1993. Hopkins used it to take his own life. He was only 32-years-old.

One of my fav 90s bands... These guys, along with Matthew Sweet, Dave Matthews, John Hiatt, BoDeans, The Connells, James McMurtry, Lyle Lovett, & The Cruel Sea, were the "new" bands that got me through the 80s and 90s...

Hi Harry, I'm from a place called Tempe in Arizona and I know all the guys. The original Guitar Player, Doug Hopkins, sadly committed suicide after he was kicked out of the band because of alcoholism. He wrote all there songs and many of them involved his girl friend Sandra Quijas

I saw that many have already mentioned Doug Hopkins, the band’s founder and lead guitarist who was kicked out for his problems. He wrote not just the lyrics but every musical part, the guitars, drums, and even parts for horns and mandolin. He was a brilliant writer and I highly recommend looking at more of his music. Hey Jealousy is my favorite song of all time, but Lost Horizons, Hold Me Down, and Pieces of the Night are all beautiful as well. There are also plenty on their album Dusted, and he had two other bands with great work by him.

It's always cool to see Harri's reactions to songs i've selected. The original videos are provided to You Tube by the hosting service VEVO most of the time. Although they have millions of views, they're blocked if Harri tries to react to their vids. As a patron who selects songs for Harri to react to, I avoid VEVO. The two songs I selected that Harri reacted to today had the required 200K views and were good quality. I look for remastered audio versions and I've selected a few quality live versions of songs this past year.

So, why don't you?? I mean, learn to play the guitar. Never too late, you know. It's really fun, been playing for many years myself. Rithme guitar is my thing, and i can tell you, this song is'nt easy to play. The Cure has some songs like this (Friday i'm in love), it sounds easy, but it is'nt. So, Harri, buy a good guitar and start practicing. Thanks for this one. 👍😁👊🎸

Absolutely! I bought my first guitar in my late 30's almost 30 years ago (I learned piano as a kid), and mostly taught myself - made some progress, and about 5 years ago decided to take lessons. So happy I did...I'm "pretty ok" now, play every day and have written about a dozen songs. Some of 'em don't suck. 🙂. For someone who enjoys music as much as you do, I'll bet you'd pick it up quickly. Give it a shot!
