The drummer in the band performing with this group is Steve Ferrone who went up to Prince to introduce himself at rehearsal. Prince said he knew who I was? He thought Prince was just being polite. Everybody goes to their instruments and Steve hears a guitar riff of a song he wrote for the average white band. It was Prince proving that he knows for fact who Steve is.

Tom Petty died one week after the end of his 40th anniversary tour. He played the last week of the tour with a fractured hip!! An X-ray the day before his death showed the ends of the bone had shifted and he needed surgery. He was in excruciating pain and simply overused the meds the doctor gave him. He died at home but was resuscitated and put on life support at the hospital. The decision was made to remove life support later thAt day.

Thanks for the info on Tom Petty. I did not know all that. I broke my hip in 2002 in a cave called Pettyjohns. I fell 4 times on a 14 hour trip, don't know which one broke it. I went to work the next Monday and worked 5 weeks, would not accept that the cave hurt me. Couldn't walk the 6th week waiting on an ortho appt. My hip was broken. So when a dumb**s Dr or nurse says you can't walk if it's broken, BS. My respect for Tom Petty has multiplied enormously. I just had to make it to my desk, he was on his feet performing for thousands. Once the Dr tells you you're broken, all the pain you've been swallowing floods your brain. He died of a broken hip, period, as far as I'm concerned. I'll cherish his music even more.

Just saw an article this weekend that says that in the Prince Documentary, they talk about this song and the fact that Prince felt slighted about being left off of Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists list and came out and intentionally made a statement by putting on an epic solo. Also probably explains his mic drop finish and walk-off. Also, that makes sense, because instead of making the solo blend in nicely with the feel of the song like the others, he made SURE his solo was brash and in your face. So aren't y'all glad Rolling Stone did that? Gave us this moment that we watch over and over. 😄

I guess you could see this as a super-group! Jeff Lynne, Prince, Dhani Harrison being George Harrison’s kid, Steve Windood. Tom Petty. Taking a classic awesome song and then making it even better! This is great thanks SO MUCH for doing this vid!

Prince was not a drug addict. He was against drugs, alcohol, cussing and smoking. In fact, it was a known rule at Paisley Park during his live performances that those things were not permitted. Yes he was given the pain pills due to the hip pain, but because they were laced with fentanyl he became addicted quickly. He was registered to go to rehab a couple days before the fentanyl caused his overdose. Very very sad situation.

You are correct on the overdose for Petty. He had been going on an extended tour of 53 concerts. He had already been told his hip was fractured. However, on the day he died he was informed that his hip injury had become a full break. The pain was excruciating. He ended up taking too much pain medication - and yes one of the pills he had included some acetyl fentanyl. But it was really a mix of all the medications that he was on that killed him . The coroner found traces of oxycodone, three forms of fentanyl, temazepam, alprazolam, citalopram and other sedatives. At 66 years of age he should never have been going on a tour that long, much less with an already fractured hip.

Sometimes, when your normal dosage isn't working, nor another one, or yet another one a while later, you start adding whatever you have, you're so desperate for relief, and you don't even realize your body is telling you enough already, finally, the system just goes haywire and it's too late. If he had been on adequate pain relief to begin with the overdosage may not have happened. People in chronic pain are not being treated properly because the government is breathing down prescribers backs and patients aren't given enough. A desperate person then starts to self-medicate. It's a bad situation for everyone.

@alexharbison4411 You’re only partially correct. Prince didn’t ask to play, the RRHOF asked him to, because he was also getting inducted that night.
