You were bummed that it ended so soon, but in the day, most songs were about that long, and there was so much good music, we didn;t even think about it. We were spoiled, man. From all the reaction videos I've seen, it's clear - we were given some of the greatest music on the planet, and we didn't even know it.

this song is about a guy who had it in his head that this girl loved him at one time long ago and she's gonna come back to him. but she never felt that way about him. he's delusional in his thinking remembering something that never was. love the lyrics , so profound. NO Wise man has the power to reason away what seems to be. what a fool believes, he sees.
@757optim
@757optim 3 жыл бұрын
According to songfacts dot com: "Michael McDonald's concept for the lyric was a scenario where two people meet in a restaurant - two people who had a passionate relationship long ago. To the man, the affair was the best thing in his life; to the woman, it was fun, but it was time to move on. In the conversation, the man makes a complete fool of himself. When the woman excuses herself to leave, he doesn't get the message, believing he still has a shot and that their affair was much more meaningful than it actually was. Love makes a man a fool, and even a wise one can't reason it away."

Thank you. You did actually get most of it right, surprisingly. Nearly all of those doing first reactions to this song didn't even listen to the lyrics or got it completely wrong. I danced to this in 1979. Yes I'm old now but it's still great. Fantastic lyrics, harmonies, melody, beat. It really has everything a good song should have but then on top of that we hear Michael's velvet vocals. I've watched videos of The DB's performing this live on stage and it's just as good as the record. I can't help asking myself how many contemporary groups or artists could actually do that today.

Michael MacDonald didn't join the Doobies until later on. He was not a member of the original iteration of the band. This tune has a high flying vocals and a mighty, mighty hook! Harri, the original lead singer, Tom Johnston, was gone. Your boy Michael was his replacement. (Although Tom did return some years later, so they did share time together in the band.) I think the best McDonald-era Doobies' track is, "Takin' It To The Streets", so I recommend that one next. As always, start with the studio version. Then, in a separate reaction down the road (or the next day), react to the song live. There are at least two killer live performances, one from '77, and one from '82...you can't go wrong with either of them. But again, studio first.

Micheal McDonald and Skunk Baxter came over to the Doobie's in 1974 from Steely Dan, Tom Johnson got sick and was in the hospital and the Doobies needed a replacement lead vocal. They got Micheal to join and the rest is history, he really put a new fresh sound for the ban and created some of the best songs the Doobies created.
