In Britain, people take one day vacations--day trips--to the seaside. They are called day trippers. In the context of this song, it means something that is short-lived, not serious. The hints are all over the lyrics: she's a teaser, one-way ticket, one-night stands, etc....

That's all true: " Day Trips" is an expression which became widely used in the UK in the 1960s to reflect the social phenomenon of short " day only" family breaks pretty much exclusively to the seaside and the song uses a clever play on words about the girl who " only played one night stands" ( another play on words but this time borrowing the musician's universal expression for a single one - night - only booking). But given it's a song from 1965 there's of course another potential meaning: " tripping" in the sense of an LSD trip ....
@ProdigyBowlersTour3 жыл бұрын
Back when "Day Tripper" was a hit single, those of us who were listening to it on the radio were hearing it in MONO on AM stations (that's what played top 40 music back then). So when I hear these early Beatles songs in stereo, they don't seem quite right to me. Also noteworthy is that The Beatles were one of very few artists whose hit singles would often have both sides of the 45 RPM record played by radio. "Day Tripper" was actually the B side of the single. The A side was a song called "We Can Work It Out," which you really ought to check out. Almost all of The Beatles singles had both the A side and B side get airplay on radio, which was unheard of at the time.
@Fool3SufferingFools3 жыл бұрын
You're not just imagining it. They released a mono mix of every song (up through the White Album at least), and the mono mixes often sounded very different from the stereo. Only the mono mixes were supervised by the Beatles themselves, because stereo was sort of considered a gimmick in those days, so the Beatles just let the engineers make the stereo mixes on their own. So the mono mixes are the way the Beatles wanted the records to sound, even though the stereo mixes have become more famous over time. (Sometimes the differences are dramatic... "She's Leaving Home" and "Don't Pass Me By" are even in the wrong key, compared to the mono versions.)

the idiom of the "day tripper" is in relation to 'a week long vacation' or 'a weekend getaway.' Instead of packing up luggage and supplies, the _day trip_ is just getting in the car and going to the beach or the city for lunch, relaxing, walking around, dinner, and then back home after dark.

The thing about the Beatles is that the best part is the evolution. The journey. It was an honor. It was fun. It was a journey as the time went by. At first I was resistant because I was young when I first saw them, 11, I turned 12 early 64. But I eventually got it. I wanted, at the time, for a million I Want To Hold Your Hand. Or She Loves You. But as I became a teen I finally got it. I understood the growth. And this is in the middle...the next step. And I simply love it and them. The only other group I love to this depth is ABBA and it took me a long time to admit that because I love the Beatles so much that as an adult my bedroom is designed with framed Beatles posters. I am no spring chicken as you can figure out by my words. But I feel like a kid every freaking time. Love them.

STILL react to that moment when The Beatles did that thing that they did and you can see other people reacting, too !! Either with a rhythm nod or drum style fist pump !! Or making gestures (still to this day! 70!) using an air Rickenbacker !! I was a kid in Palo Alto when they played Candlestick Park and they stayed at the then named Cabana in P.A. Hey Harri, what you said in the first 16 seconds about what guitar players of other bands must have thought reminds me a little of what various competing rock bands thought about Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album being declared as THE quintessential album to musically mark the year 1967, and especially its summer known in history as "The summer of love". Since you've mentioned "guitar riff" check out "I Feel Fine" and that awesome guitar strum at the beginning. Several others have suggested "I Feel Fine" for good reason, and I don't see it in your video list. My understanding is that powerful strum at the beginning was added by George before recording it, to give the song a powerful and memorable beginning. Not sure if he or someone else thought of it. Thank you for doing a lot of early Beatles material. Many are doing their later works (and there's no complaint here!), but it's nice to see you doing their pre-Sgt. Pepper's songs too. I'll hit subscribe and look forward to more videos. BTW, as you are a Beatles fan you may enjoy the 1979 Dick Clark production called "Birth of the Beatles" featuring look-alike actors that traces their beginnings before they found a drummer and after rebranding themselves as simply "The Beatles", the gigs in Hamburg, back at The Cavern Club, and ending with their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan show during their first visit to the US. Regards.

Harri - check out “Helter Skelter” for yet another sound from the Beatles. And to answer your question, I don’t think it was “a thing” for them to add little tidbits to the end of their songs, but they did it once in a while. Helter Skelter is one of those so keep listening all the way to the end!

This song was recorded after " Drive my Car " during the Rubber Soul sessions in October, '65. It was released as a double A side with " We can Work it Out, " but not included on the album. A tongue-in-cheek lyric and great guitar licks! Harmonies are delicious!

Day Tripper was a reference to the "weekend hippies" who put their suits back on on Monday morning and went back to their "straight" lives and jobs till the next weekend, calling them out as tourists to the scene rather than being an actual part of it.

A tip about listening to early Beatles... like this song... Back then The Beatles liked to record in mono, even if they recorded on two separate tracks with basically vocals on one track and music on the other The mono version just combined the two tracks. However, the record company wanted stereo version also. So you just get the two tracks as recorded ...with the hole in the middle as in this song To listen to the early Beatles songs in al their glory they must be listened to in mono as they intended them to sound

I had this 45 as a kid. I couldn't afford to buy records myself so I would try to get my parents to buy me as many Beatle singles as possible. With the occasional album. I loved growing up with this kind of music.

Thank you. This is my favourite Beatles song. For another great riff, check out And Your Bird Can Sing from Revolver. Also, She Said She Said from the same album. While you're there, listen to Revolver in its entirety. One of the greatest albums ever.

This riff is why I started playing guitar and the first riff I learned. This was a response to The Rolling Stones Satisfaction riff which came out 6 months prior!

I am used to hearing the single ‘mono’ version. Stereo just seems weird to me because I remember it as I heard it as a youth. Fantastic song!

Yes, the guitar was the foundation of the Beatles. You can hear the journey as you progress through their music. George's influence comes in later with sitar, etc.

Paul’s bass playing here is superb. People forget that, back in the day, Playboy Magazine used to run an annual poll from professional musicians around the world. They would ask them to list their 3 best instrumentalists, guitarists would vote for guitarists, drummers for drummers, etc. and every year almost every time Paul would be voted number one, by his peers, which included the likes of Charlie Mingus. Today he is very underrated.

My mom had this album when I was a kid and we played it a million times. Great memories. 🥰✌️
