Chuck Jackson was a familiar voice from my childhood. Along with Jackie Wilson, Major Lance, Ben E. King, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett,David Ruffin, Smoky Robinson, Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Terry Reid, Steve Winwood, and Marvin Gaye.

Most fans know the song as covered afterwards by Elvis and Ronnie Milsap but Chuck was the first . In the early and mid-sixties he was among the smoother soul balladeers around. Again, another nice pick from Cynthia. Love that Motown backbeat. Thanks Harri.

Chuck is one of the first voices that I realize could make a women swoon when I was about 10 or eleven. I met him years ago while he was in town. Got his autograph. I sing his songs at karaoke these days. They still get reaction. This "Any Day" track was also used to record the song "Lover" by Tommy Hunt, before it was given to Chuck Jackson. See Tommy Hunt on youtube also.....

That's wonderful, great story! They were both awesome singers. I would have loved to see Chuck perform, but he never performed in the Netherlands (or Europe) at all. Funny thing happened to me in 1991. I had been collecting them both since '84. I was walking along side a canal in Utrecht, when I saw this sign: 'Tommy Hunt performs, there and there'. I could not believe it. That Sunday, in a small cafe, with only 10 attendants, he was about to perform. I met him backstage; wonderful guy! Turned out that at that time he actually lived in Amsterdam. He was delighted that I knew all his old songs by heart and I got to ask him about Chuck and the old days too. Also about their competition of course. He really admired Chuck and wasn't envious. Absolute stunning performance btw. He is still alive (90 yrs old) and has been living in Skegness, UK, where a very nice landlady takes good care of him. The Northern Soul Scene is still very much alive there. Sadly Chuck Jackson passed a year ago; but I've got practical all of his recordings to enjoy and sing a long to; gotta love them High Ring Notes he did!

great song! I originally only knew the Ronnie Milsap version, but I watched a video where the Carpenters performed this in a 1972 Australian concert, and they mentioned Chuck Jackson (and Burt Bacharach, of course) as their inspiration ❤

The DJs in Philadelphia used to refer to him as : Chuck Jackson, Mister Action on the stage of attraction!!! He was close friends with Jackie Wilson who supposedly helped him to dress as classy as he did.
@sebastian01077 ай бұрын
Indeed. Jackie Wilson also taught him to deliver some drama and take a certain stance on stage. Where have they all gone, all those great artists? Recently I discovered Teddy Swimms; he is the first one that fills that void, if you ask me.

Hello. I believe you are thinking of Ronnie Milsap, who did a nice cover version.
@sebastian01077 ай бұрын
No, not Motown! It was on Scepter/Wand. He made a deal with the owner (Florence Greenberg) that he got his own (Wand) label. A few years later he had some, less successful, years on Motown. This is Classic New York Soul for you. I 'discovered' Chuck Jackson in 1984, when his Wand -catalogue was re-released through Kent Records, and I've been collecting his back-catalogue since. He grew up in the south and was so talented that he got a scholarship for the Music Academy. Though he often sounds a bit rough around the edges, he could sing anything from Soul to Opera. Many of his High Ring Notes are insane. A baritone singing way up in Tenor-territory. Up to 2013 his voice sounded just the way it did in the early 60's. Then, his wife passed, and he sadly stopped performing. To me, he is the greatest male-vocalist, ever. Even better than Ben E. King. R.I.P. the both. I'm glad you liked him to!

I would have to argue here, that although these guys too were both Awesome, it was only Chuck Jackson that could sing these, Stratospheric, High Ring Notes. Ben. E. King was more about phrasing. Did you ever see that show they were both on, with Al Green and with (by then incapacitated) Teddy Pendergrass, in the Apollo Theater in '93? Goosebumps!
