LOL! I saw a couple of young hipsters review this song...they thought it was too long, and The Eagles did this kind of song much better. (!?!?) I suggested (respectfully, of course, LOL) that this might be too much song for them, and maybe they should stick to songs of 4 minutes or less. I just can't see how they missed what an EPIC masterpiece this tune is.

I really enjoy your demeanor and all-around delight at discovering new music! This is, in my opinion, the finest southern rock song ever made. I saw them, as a Marine, in s. California in 1980-81 and they were the headliner of a massive show with 38-special/molly hatchet/? .... for their final encore, every stringed instrument player, in all 4 bands, lined up to play this as their final song. There were 11-13 guitar/bass players playing, in a line,.. this incredible song. It was, as a remember, a wall of guitars. Saw them in 205-16 in Arlington Heights, Il., and they absolutely nailed it like no other band I've ever heard! Just jaw dropping. I would highly recommend checking out 'Aja' by Steely Dan. They assembled 40 Emmy winning musicians to play on this album and the title song just nails it. Best song ever utilizing a cop's whistle. Keep up good work and may you be lucky in all things! BK

The live album you may be referring to is called 'Bring it back alive' which features a number of their hits at the time. In '78 or '79 I saw them headline at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago with warm up bands Point Black and Molly Hatchet. After the concert we drove up north to a popular late night club (at the time) called the Night Gallery and were shocked to see Molly Hatchet again!

@@jackndew2 the live video in this link is, I think, from one of the concerts that that album came from. If not, it's from that same era. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXbOe3mIa558jtk The CDB concert where I first heard The Outlaws, that I mentioned above, was in the fall of '76, in Moorhead, MN. As fronthorse said, overshadowed by Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. The "Texas vibe" you're getting is probably the genre, known as Southern Rock. Molly Hatchet falls squarely in this category as well. The interesting thing is all four of these bands were from Florida, with three of them, The Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Molly Hatchet being from Jacksonville, while this group, The Outlaws, was from Tampa. Florida band, but they did have significant country influences in their songwriting. They're considered Southern Rock, but with some differences. Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd told Clive Davis "If you don't sign these guys, you're the dumbest music guy I've ever met...and I know you're not." The Outlaws were signed shortly afterwards. The Outlaws opened for LS that night, must have been one hell of a show.

Good choice Harri. These guys raised the bar of guitar playing to another level with dueling guitars. Several bands of the same genre came to the forefront of which no one had ever seen or heard before. I was fortunate enough to have seen them during their golden years of playing before their time was up. All of them including Hughie Thomasson are gone now leaving a legacy that will last forever and never ever be touched. Guitar playing just doesn't get any better. Rest in peace original members. I could see where you get "Texas" from this, because it has that quintessential southern style. However, you're off by a couple states. Think Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynryd, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Gary U.S. Bonds, Derek Trucks (son of Butch Trucks, 1 of the 2 drummers from The Allman Brothers), etc. and you'd be on the proper track. I've lived in both states, and as much as I would love to say they're from Texas, which is actually where you're more likely to here Texas Rock/Blues, this is from Florida ... Tampa, Florida to be specific. The others I mentioned were all from Jacksonville, Florida area. BTW, Derek Trucks is/was a member of the Derek Trucks Band and Trucks-Tedeschi Bands, with his wife Susan Tedeschi (they married in 2001). However, rather than play drums like his famous father, he gyrated on over to the slide guitar, like his uncle (not blood), Duane Allman.

Not surprising to see Lynyrd Skynyrd pop up on your screen. Both excellent examples of Southern Rock and many consider this song to be sort of The Outlaws version of "Free Bird." That's not really put properly. It's not the same song by any stretch, but it has a similar format, including several minutes of multiple guitar ripping solos. The song its self is a shout out to Florida, where they are from. Tampa area I believe.

A song that makes you want to jump in a car, enjoy the scenery during the first half, and then FIND A STRETCH OF ROAD TO DRIVE “UNSAFELY!” Just thinkin’: definitely not the type of song for a European football pitch crowd. It starts out slowly, inducing reminiscent camaraderie, then cranks and builds to an end of guitars and blood pressure a-blazin’! AWESOME TUNE! 👍

The first rock concert my parents ever let me go to when I was a teenager was The Outlaws opening for Black Sabbath on their Heaven and Hell tour. My buddies and I found seats right up front center stage. Imaging that twin guitar jam extravaganza tearing up the fretboards ten feet in front of you. Fire!

Just curious if you've listened to Bruce Hornsby "The Way It Is"? Thanks for refreshing my memory by playing oldies.

On the northside of Chicago, there's a music venue called the Aragon Ballroom, that's where my husband just about camped out in the 70's to see not only these guys but a lot of bands on the rise. Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Mahogany Rush, Kansas and many, many more! Fabulous band but grossly underrated! Thanks Harri!

Watch a live version of this. I have seen them use as many as 6 guitars playing this song. I've also seen them play this song for as long as 20 minutes. The twin lead guitar solos were a trademark of Southern classic rock bands.

Harri: The Outlaws were from Tampa, Florida to be exact. Sadly, I don't think any of the original band members are still with us. If there are, not many. Lead guitarist/vocalist Hughie Thomasson died of a heart attack in 2007. They didn't call him "The Flame" for nothing. One of Rock's most unsung/underrated guitarists. This same album also contains their first and probably biggest hit, There Goes Another Love Song, 1975. Though they made some fine stuff after, they never really topped their self-titled debut album; on which, this song is the blistering finale. With all due respect to Skynyrd and The Allmans, for my money, Green Grass and High Tides remains the ultimate Southern Rock guitar jam.

The title isn't really a double-entendre, although it would be perfect if it were. IT's about a dream of having the lost heroes of rock n roll playing a show for yourself.

I have seen them a few times years ago. The 5 guitarists all switch parts of that incredible solo. Personally I think this should be the southern rock anthem not Freebird by Leonard Skinard as so many may say. Great reaction.

I believe that there was a mid-60s Rolling Stones best of album called "Hide Tide and Green Grass" that gave them the title of this song.
