Sinatra lighting a cigarette before he starts to sing? Man, how cool was "the boss'? I'm not talking about Springsteen either! No big deal back then -- it was a different time of class and grace. Classy selection, Bennett - loved your reaction, too, Harri!

I assume you are familiar with the album "Getz/Gilberto." For those who are not, it features jazz saxophonist Stan Getz and bossa nova guitarist João Gilberto. It includes the famous song "The Girl from Ipanema," but the entire album is excellent. I find that when I play music that has vocals in a language I don't understand, I listen to the singer's voice like it's just another instrument. I've loved this album for about 50 years, since I discovered it as a toddler.

Me too. Bought the album for "The Girl From Ipanema" but soon learned to love the rest of it as well. At first I thought the lyrics were in Spanish until I asked a Spanish speaking co-worker to listen to it and he could not understand it. Later I found out it was Portuguese.

The amazing thing is that the first two songs - Change Partners and I Concentrate on You - in the medley are not part of the Bossa Nova canon but were written by two of the giants of the American songbook, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter respectively. Yet, Sinatra and his German arranger Claus Ogerman adapted them to fit perfectly.

Love this medley. It’s pure heaven. Thanks for this reaction. BTW Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Nat King Cole were all great singers who often would smoke during their song. It was a thing in the 50s and 60s but for obvious reasons you rarely see that now.

Here is another gem for you Harri, Elis Regina was very involved with Jobim and recorded many of his songs. Toots Thielsman is the most unlikely 60s groovy cat but performed with all the great performers of the crooner era. This is real talent on overload.

My stepdaddy's favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, the generation of WWII. I grew up with the ash tray in just about every living room of the America household. The restaurants, with even the dinner/lounge train cars had ash trays. The airlines had ash trays. The automobile had ash trays. The movie theatres had a smoking sections and lounge ash trays. Matches, match books, and fancy silver flip top lighters. Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack set that casual lounge mood smoking while singing. Watching 1950's example commercials were Lucky Strikes or with programs like Perry Mason and I Love Lucy was smoking, and smoking, and more smoking. Talk Shows would not be without an ashtray. Everywhere was an acceptable light up...gosh, your wonderful videos bring back so many memories. But I grew up with the Frank Sinatra sound.

Never seen this before. Didn't know they had ever collaborated. FYI- Jobim wrote the music and Vinicius de Moraes the lyrics to "The Girl From Ipanema" which is a true story. The best, and best known, version was released in 1964 with Stan Getz on Sax, Joao Gilberto on guitar and English vocals by Joao's wife Astrud.

Dear Harri, the diva Sarah Vaughan recorded an album singing Beatles (if you haven't heard it I highly recommend it) and on 'Something' with a Bossa Nova style arrangement by Marcos Valle (who also sings), I'm sure you'll like it. I take the opportunity to say that she recorded 2 albums with Brazilian songs, in one of which a young guitarist, Hélio Delmiro, had a demonstration about who S.V. was: they had recorded a song - If You Went Away (Preciso Aprender a Ser Só) - in which he did a solo, they went to check everything seemed fine, but she asked them to record it again, but this time it was so that he could feel more free to play. They restarted and he thought he was doing well, but she stopped and said to the producer "I think he still doesn't understand, say what's happening now is just because of him, that for him to play everything he knows" recognizing and valuing the talent of this young - the great singers, actors, etc are humble and recognize value in others. Finally, I add that the last time she entered a recording studio was for a Brazilian record. I always say that music is art and art is not classified by its age but by its quality. Greetings from Brazil.
