There is a reason that it sounds like the drummer has 4 arms. There are 2 of them. And 2 fantastic guitar players as well. Then you have Greg Allman smokin' that Hammond Organ and doing those scorching vocals as well. Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Soul Jazz... I just call it awesome! And we do know how lucky we were.

That was a 19 year old Greg Allman singing. He also wrote this song. Duane Allman is the lead guitarist, but you heard Dickie Betts first out of your right ear. Duane is in the left. The Allman Bros. were one of the first to have two drummers. Duane famously said , "if James Brown can have two drummers, then so can I." The drummers are Butch Trucks and J.J. 'Jamoe' Johnson. Duane often joked that he had, '2 drummers, 3 guitarists, 2 little guitars and 1 big guitar, and a keyboard player. Now all I need is a bass player.' His meaning was that Barry Oakley the bass player played as many notes as the guitarists did. If you listen closely you will hear why he said that. Harri you have gotten just the tip of the ice burg with this. The ABB are widely known as the best Jam Band ever. So I am going to give you a link for this song that they played at The Fillmore East in 1971. Since it is over 22 minutes long I won't insist you play it here. Just sit back in a dark room with no distractions. Put the headphones on LOUD and sit back and let this song wash over you. You will have a hard time listening to anything but their live stuff after this. Let me know what you think. ENJOY!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4TYoIpugrmVkLs

Two Drummers who keep time like an atomic clock, Two of the finest electric guitar players to ever live and definitely the best ever at twin guitar harmony lines I say the best white blues singer to ever live. A brilliantly written and composed song that keeps you on the edge of your seat like an action movie -and the train like tempo is I believe that this song is played in 11/14 time which is very distinctly unheard of -quite simply. The Allman Brothers Band stands alone as a type of musical category in itself❤️!

My cousin Billy is a guitar player and has been a huge Allman Brothers Band fan for decades now. He got to see them live more than a few times (he also got to see SRV 2 times as well). He told me a story about one of those concerts in the 80s. Dude in his row was loaded; his drunk ass self kept screaming for 'Whippin' Post' over & over again for like 45 minutes. He finally passes out in his seat. The Allmans start playing Whipping Post & dude wouldn't get up for his song! Totally knocked out cold and couldn't be roused from his drunken slumber. His friends had to literally carry him out of the Philadelphia Spectrum (RIP). Good times & good review 🙂

Duane Allman's guitar playing so impressed Eric Clapton that their band (Derik and the Dominos) flew to America to record. Hoping to get the sound that the ABB were getting. . The 2 legends crossed paths at Miami's Criteria Studios in September, 1970. The result turned out to be one of Rock music's most legendary anthems, Layla. (written about George Harrisons still married wife) I met Domino keyboardist Bobby Whitlock in 1979. The description he gave of these 2 guitarist, working their guitar parts out on those tracks. was incredible. Good call, Hari. Cheers, RNVB

My favorite band for 50 years. Crazy to think that Greg laid down those vocals at the tender age in his late teens. So soulful, so bluesy. Brother Duane and Dickey’s guitars cry and sing, the base of Berry Oakley and organ of Greg serve to drive the song and hold everything together, while the two drums of Butch and Jamoe add rhythm and texture that helped make this a truly great tune. “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” (Studio version for first go) off their IdleWild album is a jazz influenced instrumental masterpiece written by Dickey Betts, to which all other rock instrumentals are compared. The Live at the Fillmore album also contains a longer version of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and this album is also consider by many to be one of if not the finest rock live album. The amazing thing about the ABB, is that they rarely laid dawn a tract that was not a burner, excellent. “Statesboro Blues”, “Melissa”, “Blue Sky”, “Midnight Rider”, “Stormy Monday”, “Dreams”, “One Way Out”, “Hoochie Coochie Man”, “Jessica (jazz-country inspired instrumental written by Dickey Betts, that puts a smile on anyone’s face), “Soulshine (later incarnation of the ABB), “Little Martha”, “Not My Cross To Bear”, “Ramblin Man”. The Allman Brothers band fused rock, the Blues, Country, and Jazz creating in the process a new genre of music, termed Southern Rock. The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band were also a Great Southern Rock Band. “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Tuesdays Gone”, “Simple Man”, “Call me The Breeze”, “T For Texas”, “That Smell”, “Saturday Night Special” and of course the Iconic “Free Bird” among many more great tunes.

One of the two drummers has a nephew named Derek Trucks who carries on the traditions of the ABB today in the Tedeschi Trucks Band (also with two drummers). Well worth checking out.

had the absolute privilege of sitting on stage watching Jamoe and Butch play together - you'll never see anything like in your life - the precision was not to be believed, their hands moved so fast that they were actually a blur, and the two of them, smilin' all the time ! Both very gracious men.

They have many good songs. That is one of the best. BTW they had 2 drummers, so you caught that.

Loved them, worked for them & Skynyrd in the day. I missed meeting Duane & sadly also bass player Berry Oakley-who does an amazing rumble bass intro. He died in a bike crash like Duane. These bands have big repertoires so enjoy, well worth it! Fast guitars.

The best Southern Rock Band, many hits. Yes Greg Allmans really has so much grit and soul in his voice, he also plays the Hammond organ on this track. 👍👍👍

The first time Clapton saw this band his jaw dropped and he and Duane just stared at each other, agog. Musical love at first sight. Clapton said "he was the musical brother I'd never had." And of course Duane played on "Layla" and that great jam at the end.

The singer is Greg Allman, who is also playing the organ. He's around 17 at the time this was recorded.
