The drummer is Carmine Appice, widely considered one of the best. Obviously he's not just a great drummer but a great performer. He later played with Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart (with whom he wrote a hit or two), Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and on and on. He's also a leader in educating drummers, with books and videos and drummers' clinics. I attended a clinic once and learned a lot, and got to meet Carmine. Great drummer and great guy. He has a hilarious video on youtube talking about the time he met Buddy Rich, the world's greatest drummer, and it's worth seeking out. His brother Vinnie really rocks on drums too. Sorry for the long post...can you tell I'm a fan?

I remember seeing this on TV back in 1968. A true power ballad. Remember, back then the was no VHS, no internet - no nothing! If you missed a performance on TV, you just missed it, period! Hell, back then color TV had only been around for about 3 years or so.

The drummer is Carmine Appice. He is still a badass drummer today. He spent many years with Rod Stewart (Hot Legs, etc time-period), a trio with this bass player (Tim Bogert - whom we just recently lost) and Jeff Beck, and again, together with Tim and with one of the OG badasses, Jimmy McCarty (Mitch Ryder, etc) on guitar, they formed Cactus, which is still touring. This was the AM version. The album version is longer. VF, along with the Rascals, were one of the few rock groups with organ held as important as the guitar. Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Lee Michaels, Teagarden and Van Winkle, ELP and Yes, and a few others, just about round out that pool. After that, it’s pretty much all Guitar Gods hogging it all (lol). So, VF were a very rare group, indeed, in that they were funky as can be, had strong vocals, pushed the organ up front a lot, and Carmine was one of the very earliest “power drummers” in rock. So glad you enjoyed them, as you can now enjoy about a half-dozen equally strong offshoots!
@jhamptonjr

This is still at least a 5 minute version, so longer than the AM single release which was under 3 minutes. I love this live version it's just so raw! Then again, the full-length album cut was a 1-take recording and sounded just as raw to me. Love this group! Carmine Appice is a drummer's drummer! #Peace!

I only recently stumbled across one of their LPs in a dollar bin at the record store. I immediately noticed the combo base and drums sounding similar to Led Zeppelin. Upon further investigation, I learned that Led Zeppelin originally used to open FOR THEM. Per an interview with the drummer, Carmine Apice, John Bonham first looked up to him and elaborated some of Apice's style. Karin peace even helped John Bonham get a copy of his (Carmine's) drum set and recommended Led Zeppelin to some music producers. They supposedly also influenced many of the other bands who made it big just after that.

I can still see my parents cringing when us kids wanted to listen to our rock music, LOL!!!! We had to put up with Lawrence Welk prior to Ed Sullivan, so it all evened out in the wash, ha ha!!!! Yeah, this group and also Deep Purple were similar with different talents but always the psychedelic backgrounds going on. The singer loved using his other arm to sing when he wasn't playing the organ....a bit on the dramatic side here it seems too looking back on it, but we loved it back then!

We all knew this song from The Supremes release but this took it to another space and time! This band played live at my high school in 1968 as a scheduled show in the auditorium, still don't know how that happened, guess the administration didn't know who they were, LOL. Did you know that this was the biggest band Atlantic Records had signed before they took a chance on the band others had turned away from?... do you know who that was yet?...Led Zeppelin! Best decision Atlantic Records ever made (and that is straight from them)! Led Zeppelin in their early tours of the US in 1969 also opened a few shows for Vanilla Fudge.

It's all you really need by the band but I wanted something fresh to listen to so now I have covers of 'People Get Ready', 'She's Not There' (The Zombies), 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'You Can't Do That' by the Beatles. The Ed Sullivan Show was on every Sunday Night at 8pm. It was a "Variety Show." Ed had all kinds of different acts on every week. Jugglers, Chinese acrobats, Comics, Singers from all genres, and of course Rock and Roll acts starting in the mid 1950s with Elvis, Little Richard, Buddy Holley etc. The show had something for everyone in the family. Everyone would gather around the television after Sunday dinner, in almost every home in America. It was an American tradition throughout the 1950s until the early 70s. An appearance on that show, could make or break your career. It is in re-runs/syndication in America on some of the "Nostalgia' TV Networks, that play tv series of the past. Thanks Harri

Yeah! Glad you liked it, Harri. I'm also delighted that you noticed the drummer, Carmine Appice. He's considered one of, if not THE, best drummer of the psychedelic movement. Great reaction!

So easy to see why we were so intense back then, the war in Vietnam , the changes in social life and order, the women becoming empowered from within, and all of that incredible music that was the thread that kept the pieces of the society together. Some powerful tunes!!

He said the song was not sung correctly by Diana Ross. The song is full of pain, so they made their version of it.

Their songs were often very slow and very loud. I saw a set of theirs once just before Jimi Hendrix came onstage.
