Erik Wiens I will be praying for you. Never give up and never surrender to your sin. God still love you and wants you so don't believe Satan's lies of hopelessness. Keep fighting. Be drastic even. Jesus said pluck out your eye and cut off your hand. To me that means don't leave any open doors for the enemy to exploit. Most importantly, never forget God's love for you. In your weakness He is made strong. Cleave unto Him and don't be ashamed to acknowledge your weakness. I hope that helps you. will be praying. God bless.

Erik Wiens To be free of sin believe that when Jesus died your sinfull nature died and now you are free of sin. You now have a devine nature a mustard seed that will grow huge. The tricky part is growing that mustard seed with Grace, not your own works. As soon as you use your own effort you fail to sin. Your many attempts to be sin free will be accomplished thru living a life of belief in grace Truth of Jesus. In grace your only obligation is to choose righteousness keep it down to a simple choice, no will power required because by grace. Choose to live life now like already in heaven. What would I watch and do in heaven? Amen Brothers and Sisters

Friend, submit to the scripture in Romans 6 that says that when we submit our members to righteousness, this leads to sanctification. When you're struggling with sin, pick someone to pray for, call your pastor or spiritual leader and pray with them, pray for your brothers, especially the fathers, praise Jesus, Dig out the promises of Scripture. All these actions hold promises, and GOD NEVER FAILS. Unlike what many say, we are never free of sin in this life, but we WILL be made more like Jesus, because GOD NEVER FAILS.

I agree. Those pastors that are preaching these watered down health wealth message are shameful. They boast on asking God for these things because after all God wants you to be happy right? What God wants are spiritually matured individuals like his Son who put value into human lives giving of themselves not expecting anything in return. Which has it's reward which is great in Heaven.

I love this sermon. My biggest struggle is not with the physical action of sin, but the desire to commit the sin. I want it so bad and I use every fleshly tactic to keep myself from sin, but whats the point if inside i still want it so bad? Like, I feel all it takes one moment of weakness to just explode. This sermon reminds to destroy the sin inside of me. To simply get rid of it from inside. Not just change the action, but let God change the desire. This to me is sooo important.

Every day I ask, Lord guard my heart and mind from the temptation to sin, and I name the sin of which I most need help with. But remember what Paul said, when I am weak then I am strong. God will make a way to overcome when we are weak and give us a way out. We cannot do it on our own, WE NEED CHRIST! He is our only hope. In Christ alone are we saved. We are great sinners, but Christ is a greater Savior.

The "fight talk" is much needed. I am at war with the mean spirited impatient, impolite me. By the grace of God, I have had moments when I would normally bite someones head off with wrathful words, then I Open my mouth and say something a person far better than I would utter. Those moments the "War" is appreciated to humble me against myself. If You grew up with Christ in Your life, patience and politeness are ingrained in You, if You come to the Lord later in life this struggle may be familiar.

Confess your sins to one another. Open your heart wide.. reveal the anxieties, fears, worries, addictions.. if you don't open up and you continue to isolate, how can you let others know what's going on? We all struggle in this area.. I struggled with pornography for decades but the love of God changed how I viewed others, him and myself, not my former self but the new self made new in the image of God, who I really am. It broke my heart.. but God is near to the brokenhearted. Wash your hands you sinners and purify your hearts, weep mourn and wail.. sackcloth and ashes, for God gives grace to the humble. He will never.. leave you, never.. forsake you. When your heart breaks for others it shows you the way Christ's heart broke for us. There is no fear in love, but perfect love that casts out all fear.. be perfect for your Father in heaven is perfect. Love your enemies. Love you all.

I think looking back I only had a kind of intellectual assent to Sin. It took years and some painful failures in my life to finally see the utterly destructive nature of my Sinful acts. I saw up close and personal that the wages of Sin is truly death. I saw it at work in the lives of Christians and unbelievers alike. I was still rebelling against a Holy God, and certainly deep down I did not want to be Holy as He is Holy. (I Peter 1:16) I have finally got it and I have agreed with God concerning its seriousness. May we not only receive His Mercy and Forgiveness of our Sin, but desire to root it out of our lives completely. Walking in relationship with God, His power through prayer and of course always His all sufficient Grace to persevere and fight this Good fight.

Thank God for John Piper. Every day I need to make war against sin, and sin isn't something minuscule. The effects of sin are death, and if not in the natural, you feel it spiritually. But it can STOP. Through the works of the cross, we have been crucified with him and resurrected with him, so that we too may be able to deny our fleshly desires. We must go to war with sin, we must kill the flesh, and live to do the will of God. I'm glad that My eyes have been open, that God has allowed me the opportunity to at one point have struggled with sin, to the point that I realized that their isn't one desire of the flesh that can fill this void in my life. That only through finding my satisfaction in him can I live a life that is pleasing and holy to him. Believe me when I tell you this, there is REDEMPTION in the name of Jesus, and if God could love someone like me, who was so stuck in his sin, that was so lost in his own ways enough to save my life. After years of devaluing God of his worth because I "believed" that something on this earth can satisfy more than he can, then he could definitely rescue you!

There are varying lvls of maturity in each of our walks with Jesus/God.... and this is quite a mature one (i.e. Pastor Piper talking to a room full of pastors).... Without the proper context this has the potential to be a massive stumbling block for those fragile/weak/green in their walk with God.... *taking snippets out of this and/or not listening to the whole teaching would be sketchy.* "give yourself to helping your people kill the sin that kills their joy"; again, very much directed at mature believers studying ministry

I used to love John Piper’s teaching! And by that I mean that I hated it, but I thought his sermons, and way of thinking, were the path to true spirituality and union with God. Thankfully, papa showed me that he and I are one from eternity past and for the rest of time, and now I feel no shame in not giving a shit what John has to say. I hope he finds rest in his walk with God and finds the hope of Christ within him. And I hope this for everyone. The fight of faith is to let go. His yoke truly is easy. Let go of your day to day struggles. Fight to accept that God understands your frailty and the things that make your life hard. Fight to accept that God actually likes you and wants the best for you. Fight to rest from your religious efforts. Gods faith in YOU will give you life!! And it will set you free from this striving and religiosity that John Piper wants to sell you. Hey, if his sermon helps you, I am happy for you! But if you are like me and this sermon pains your heart and reminds you how you don’t measure up, I hope that my words have encouraged you.

He did not say that Christians don't sin. Sin still dwells in us. But those of us who still continue in our sin, not walking after the Spirit, and as Pastor John "make peace with it", will we expect to meet Jesus and hear Him say well done? We're not saved by works, but by God's grace through faith in Christ. Once we have received Christ, we are given the Holy Spirit to bring life into us, because we are dead in our flesh. Christ died, being condemned in the flesh for us, and He resurrected allowing us to recieve Himself by faith. The Christian life is submission to God. Paul's message in this passage is to exhort us to submit to God, walking in the Spirit rather than in the flesh. If the Spirit of Christ lives in the believer, no matter how the flesh rages on, by looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, we will lay aside what is already dead, and walk on in the life of Christ. Jesus says in Matthew 24:12-13 "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." It's not by the works of the flesh that we work and endure, but by the finished work and endurance of Christ that we do. Paul also says in Ephesians 2:10, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." If we have been born again of the Spirit of God, we have been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God already has ordered out for us to walk in by the life Christ lives. My pastor taught me something that I never caught onto before, but was and is such an encouragement to me because it is the truth. Peter confessed that Jesus has the words of eternal life. Jesus Himself said to Nicodemus, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting, or eternal life." Peter gives a very similar exhortation to us in His first epistle. "Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 1 Peter 2:7-10" Just like Christ preached to His disciples in John 6, and many left and never followed Him again, and only the twelve were left, and Judas was the betrayer, the apostles preached to their people back then, and God speaks to us through His Word today. The Word doesn't change, and God draws His elect, saves His elect, and keeps His elect by the blood of Christ. We are just men and women who have been called by God's grace, transformed, and hold fast by faith to the love of God in Christ that has a hold of us. We don't kill sin to earn victory; we kill sin standing in the victory Jesus has won and has placed us in!

I love the heart of the message, but I wonder if he inadvertently took the joy of salvation away form those secure in Christ. This message could both help those needing to break free from sin they have not taken seriously. But, it could also push some into condemnation trying to get free and please God by works. Also he seems to suggest a truly born again Christian, may not quite get free enough from whatever they are battling with to get to heaven.

I have the same concern and questions. It was a powerful sermon and I know it’s important and I need to mediate on it further. I’m a new Christian and now very burdened and confused.

Listening very closely to this message is important. I think that he gets some things flat out wrong. For example, believers aren’t going to hell because we sin. There’s no biblical basis for that. However, God will discipline us if we are truly His children (Hebrews 12), of course when looking at the letters it’s important to walk through the 4 relevant layers of context; allusions to the Biblical story (mostly Old Testament; historical/cultural context; situational context (which we can really only guess based off stray clues) and literary context (the conventions within the format of 1st century letters). Stripping these letters for their parts as if they’re abstract theological essays is going to lead to tons of confusion. The name of the game is context. I hope what Piper means is that true believers of Jesus will be born again with a new Spirit, and that will reflect in their actions. Beware of spiritual pride in this journey, and stay focused on serving others above all else, as did our Lord of glory Jesus Christ. Hit me with any questions concerning this or anything else! Stay assured in the gospel- that by grace through faith you have been saved, not by works so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8,9). Upon belief you were officially justified
