I was in Home Depot a few years ago alone in an aisle and noticed this was playing. I started shuffle walking with the beat and a guy turned the corner and saw me. We both paused and started that same walk in opposite directions as we passed each other. Not a word was said. I’ll never forget that.

For me, this is one of the most grossly underrated Steely Dan songs. The guitar work in the middle of the song is insane!!!!

Another great tune by 'The Dan'! In Buddhism, a bodhisattva or bodhisatva is a person who is on the path towards bodhi or Buddhahood. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have put off entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment. Thanks, Harri!

Ten. I’ll never forget buying this album when it came out and being blown away! My Old School, Chain Lightning, Show Biz Kids, Bodhisattva, The Pearl Of The Quarter…and more…not a weak song in the bunch. What’s more? They’ve never had a weak song. And this being only their second album, none of us had any idea what these guys would eventually serve up. Incredible music! I had the privilege of seeing them twice…Diamonds In My Ears! LoL What a career. So glad I got to be around when every album came out. I am 70 now. I worked with a lot of guys that were 20 years younger than I in the 1990s and I told them you have got to listen to this band! And do you know what? They did…and they got it!

Bodhisattva has got a mood I have never heard anywhere else. It's the interplay between jazz-rock guitar and rock'n'roll guitar, and keyboards which are headed.. somewhere celestial.

This is the 2nd album from Steely Dan, " Count down To Ecstacy" from 1973. Bodhisattva is the stage where a Buddhist has reached enlightenment. The most notable factors regarding Steely Dan are their sound and aesthetics, which are ostensibly hippie. This exuberant rock song, strongly influenced by jazz, fuelled by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's trippy guitar, displays their genius display of versatility in musical genres. Great reaction Harri. ❤ I give it a 9. Fabulous choice Tim S. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

I couldn't have said it better, Harri. There is absolutely no genre or box anyone can put Donald Fagen & Walter Becker into. "Bodhisattva" is the smoothest Rock & Roll song ever recorded. During the early 1980's the guys that grew up during the 1960's and 1970's knew how nice it is to listen to Steely Dan. When I went to the park for pickup basketball games, someone inevitably would bring their 'Boom Box' and have a Steely Dan cassette playing. Strangely enough, I noticed everyone putting 100% effort into the our game. Athletic performance can be just as beautiful and creative as music.

Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva, Bodhisattva, Look out! Look out! those ratings are going to bite you in the arse Hari. 😗🤪 Of course the 'Extraordinary Men Of The Groove' can make a basic Rock & Roll track extra special, give it some sheen, some shine on our collective Japan. 9.2 from the Oxfordshire judges.

aye, Harri - what a cool song to start ratings... love your reason for starting that: "I like to live dangerously' (thats a phrase of the 1st Austin Power's movie) ... of course you're up for 'trouble', as we all have different ratings, but let me just say, that your '8.5' is quite reasonable from my perspective, for that fantastic song 😎

Love Steely Dan, all of it, but I love the first two albums the most, thats when they still were a functioning rock band. The later albums were studio projects with session players and a liiitle too slick at times. This song is from their second album.

Instrumental? Try "true companion". It's really Donald Fagen by himself, but it's mostly a (slower) instrumental like this, with a short vocal bit at the end. Also a full instrumental is "east st.louis toodleloo". I think it's actually a Duke Ellington or Louie Armstrong song (can't remember which), with an old time sound, but still interesting.

8.5/10 is a pretty fair score, as it leaves a nice range above it for other songs which are slightly "better," or obviously "better/more significant." However, it's hard to find any fault with this one, and I don't recall any criticism of the track in your reaction/review. So I assume you didn't give it a 10/10 because you anticipate future tracks which you might want to highlight more with an even higher score than this track received. So, if this is essentially a "perfect" track, how can another one outscore it? In the end, doesn't it all come down to subjective opinion coupled with current mood as to why one "perfect" track might receive a "lower" score than another "perfect" track? (P.S. I know subjective opinion is a reaction video's raison d'etre, I just wondered where, for you, this recording lost 15% in potential score.)
