As long as we covered the keymap for that game, the game is instantly playable with controller. We are streamlining the buttons based on stock controls. I am using the largest DOS collection out there with 6000+ playable games and out of those 1500 fit the genre´s I just mentioned. I also built a launcher that allows you to freely browse through games and play them instantly and see some screenshots and information about each game before starting it. While we currently wade through the 550 PC platform games we do find plenty of fun games and plenty of junk. Its just the reality of DOS gaming.

@@Pixelmusement For me, some of the appeal to playing older DOS games is because I played the Shareware versions as a kid, and never got to play the commercial release. Or, if I did have the commercial release, I just never played any of them through from beginning to end, for whatever reason. I'm still finding older DOS games that I end up loving to play, though; it wasn't until I was much older that I caught wind of Sid Meier's Covert Action, or actually gave System Shock a try. I think there are still a lot of fun games out there that you haven't had the opportunity to play. Just get some rest and come back to it fresh. :) That being said, don't be afraid to start an AWG at some point. PC Gaming didn't die with DOS. There is quite a lot of stuff you could review as "Ancient Windows Games". For example, I'm a huge Wing Commander fan. Yet WCIV, Prophecy, and the Prophecy Secret Missions are all outside the range of what you would play on ADG. Having and ADW would give you the chance to talk about them! Speaking of Wing Commander.... there are SO MANY games in the series you still haven't done! WC2, WC3, and Privateer are must-play games! Academy and Armada are very short experiences that you could review for the entertainment of your audience without having to invest much time into them. Plus, the WCNews site will feature anything that talks about Wing Commander. It's like instant views for the channel! ;-) Coming back to the AWG idea, you could also consider Ancient Mac Games and Ancient Amiga Games. i.e. Games that might be familiar to your audience , though they may or may not have had a chance to experience them. You know, like Super Wing Commander! (*ducks*)

What I would love to see for ADG Pro is you diving into various games' files. For example some games have data files that are easy to extract (Dune 2 comes to mind, but most other 90s games are similar). You can find graphics, sounds etc. in there, some of them even unused, and you could explain for example the difference between WAV and VOC files, or the various music tracker formats that were often found in such games. Sometimes, the game EXE itself also contains interesting bits and pieces (like left-over debugging symbols, overlays with data appended to the EXE file, undocumented command line switches for cheat-modes, etc.). Sometimes it might need a bit of digging to get usable data out (the game files might be "encrypted" via XOR, or graphics files might be split from their palette, etc.)...

@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+Pixelmusement Well, it's more a matter that doing those kinds of videos means I'm either competing against TCRF trying to find everything myself, which is impractical since multiple people investigate these games so it would be way too easy for me to miss things, or rehashing the TCRF articles which isn't really something I want to be doing 'cause that's kinda not cool, taking other people's investigations and presenting them as my own... Or I suppose maybe someday in the future, with permission from the TCRF staff, I could make videos which specifically dive into the TCRF articles, showcasing the contents of them, but that's neither here nor now. Definitely stuff to think about and keep in mind though! :)

I think ADG Mods and ADG Pro sound like really good ideas, and if you feel compelled to do these in between more sparse regular DOS game reviews I think that sounds like a good way to stay focused and keep the vids fresh without burning out. I know you've been doing the occasional Windows game review as filler vids, and I don't want to put too much on your plate by suggesting this, but I think something you could do is an occasional "Ancient Windows Games" review as its own series. I know a lot of your peers have already talked about games made for Windows 3.1, 95 and 98, but I think that the ADG video review style would be nice for an occasional Windows game review if you need a week to fill up or a particular Windows game catches your fancy. There are a lot of Windows games made for the old 3.1 and 9x OSes that aren't covered a lot, some barely at all, and it would be nice to see a ADG styled breakdown of some of them. I want to stress again that I'm suggesting this as an occasional video series to fill in some weekly slots if necessary.

This said, I’d like to praise LGR that most his videos are still ENTERTAINING (skipping thrifts and box openings now-a-days), but I see your channel as more serious; you as an inventor and upkeeper of the dos game heritage. Thank you for your long road making these vids for us.

Honestly both these things sound good. I'm thinking of doing a thing on my wordpress blog (jispylicious.wordpress.com) where I talk about steps to get old software running... because in some cases I've noticed its different between real hardware and Dosbox. Recent experience was the CD-ROM version of Flashback: the Quest for Identity. For some reason it doesn't install properly in Dosbox (it'll create a batch file but not a sound configuration or an installer--nor will it actually bring up sound configuration at any time) but does just fine on real hardware... yet on real hardware its a game that doesn't like fast machines but this seems to completely disappear in Dosbox. I'm not sure if these same issues exist in the floppy disk version... does anyone down in the comments know?

Pro format: Of course there could have been speedrunners (in specific) who might already have looked into this stuff if it was relevant to the runs. Make sure to look up guides and such.

TASvids would be a great resource; the problem is, it isn't easy to TAS a computer game.

+Simo Vihinen The point of the Pro videos is the process of investigation with a minimal reliance on external sources, or with only the most basic external knowledge typically found from the period of time the game was made in, such as cheat codes. If I was just rehashing info already on the web then there wouldn't be anything entertaining about the video. :P
@simovihinen8756 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement If you're going to put in such effort, you might as well make "has this already been done" one of your criteria though, mightn't you? To be fair, not a lot of DOS games in specific have been run, or thus, studied.
@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+Simo Vihinen The trick is to play more of the games I want to be playing, so whether something I want to investigate has been done before or not is irrelevant and doesn't change anything in regards to the entertainment potential of such a video. ;)

I can't understand why people wouldn't want you to do LPs. Good, thorough, focused LPs by skilled and knowledgeable players tend to be some of the best gaming content out there. Reviews are nice, especially detailed objective reviews like yours, but they can only go so far. A good LP can deconstruct the whole game from beginning to end and take you on a journey that even the best reviews can't deliver. I guess the main problem, for me at least but presumably for other viewers, is that to avoid spoilers I'd only watch if I'd finished the game, which could restrict views to a certain extent. Obviously this doesn't apply to reviews, provided the reviewer is conscientious of spoilers which I'll admit isn't always the case. Regardless it still baffles me why someone who's supposedly passionate about games would not appreciate a good LP. Sure there are some terrible LPs out there, I'm not a fan of the shallow truncated half hour ones that trend on some of the bigger channels nor the "personality" driven ones where the focus is more on the player than the game (and don't get me started on streams), but when they're good, like I said, they can be some of the best gaming content out there. That said ADG Pro sounds great, I'm looking to play System Shock for the first time so providing you don't get too spoilerish it should be an interesting watch.
@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+PlayStationPaul What it basically comes down to is that LPs are less popular than structured videos. Every single person I watch on KZbin who does both has between 1/4 and 1/10 the views on their LPs compared to their structured content. This doesn't mean people don't like them, but not enough people like them for me to warrant swapping out structured content for LPs. :P
@PlayStationPaul6 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement Sure, though not always the case. I watch a few channels where the LP views are higher than any "structured" content (though I'd argue that a good LP would still be structured, but I understand what you mean). I'm more of an LP guy than a review guy anyway so that's usually the main focus of those channels. But my point was WHY are they less popular? When in theory a good LP will give you a more thorough insight into a game than a review. I realise I've probably partially answered that question already. I've watched all your reviews, several times in some cases, but none of your LPs, mainly because I've never played the games you've let's played and I don't want them spoiled in case I do. But if you ever decided to let's play a game I'd finished I'd be on it like a shot.

Looking forward to the mod videos. I'm guessing Doomed would be one tool to cover. By the way, I think you would love to play around with Turbo C++ 3 and poking the VGA memory. How about making some videos coding snow, smoke, plasma effect, raster lines, playing MOD and syncing to gfx, etc. Check out www.brackeen.com/vga

@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+TheCraziestFox I do occasionally do simpler game dev on my livestreams, but trying to make a series out of it for larger projects just slowed the whole process down and with so little time to work on game dev as it stands I can't really afford that time loss. Plus not a lot of people were interested in it compared to the rest of my videos. :/
