Can you relate?
ADHD Life Lessons I Wish someone told me after getting diagnosed, number 46 of 50.
If you have ADHD, it will be really easy for you to do what you want to do, but not what you should do. Whether it's at work or a side project, no matter how well you start, once you need daily effort and motivation, it becomes almost impossible because your brain lacks dopamine and so, you often switch to something else and lose potential compound interest on what could have been, all the while being called lazy.
This is when I had to learn about making my work dopamine-positive to help me play the long game. I realized that good things take time and that I needed to find a way to get dopamine from my work, so my brain can stick with it for longer. And while the work itself can't change, the environment usually can. Working outside, with other people or focusing on quality, rather than quantity has all made my work a lot more enjoyable, allowing me to stick with for years, instead of months.
Lesson 46: Make your work dopamine-positive.
Disclaimer: All my content is based on my own experience and/or research/observations from licensed professionals. Just because you do these things, doesn’t necessarily mean you have ADHD. If you think you might have it, please look to get officially diagnosed by a professional.

My lifelong passion despite the type changing has always been art, so I decided to go into design for this reason, I couldn’t keep living hating my job and life. Every time someone enjoys the artwork I make for them I get a boost of dopamine. I have cutouts of nice comments I get in email responses taped to the wall by my desk. I also have a bunch of fun dumb decorations on my desk like a line of rubber ducks

I'm also a multi-canvas designer who collects comments to raise self-esteem and sets up rows of rubber ducks at work to make people laugh.. twins? Since committing to design, my life has been beautiful, now 9-5 work is just inspiration for me to overcome and do more of what I love. I'm an INFP-T 4w5 personality btw

I never thought I’d want a 9-5 but I have to stick to a schedule to keep myself sane but my adhd makes it so hard to keep one myself so honestly it’s a dream come true, plus still have time for things in the evening. Even tho I never do anything in the evening it’s nice to know I could lmao. I can’t remember my personality type but I know it started with I. I also have a TY Chameleon, some pop figures and a ceramic mushroom on my desk lol!

Starting off extremely ambitious, having fun, wanting to do more and more, missing out things I should do besides the job and someday just tripping over my own feet, cuz I'm extremely over the edge. Maybe try to work in cycles instead of steady, but slow streams. Not everyone is about working each and everyday straight.

Thank you for these videos. They are important to many of us. I live in the UK, in a city that has a world renown teaching hospital and they have *closed their adult ADHD department and it will not return* . There are no private companies specialising. If you are an adult with adhd or undiagnosed adhd that lives in my city, you have ZERO professional help. and obviously the rest of the NHS will be following suit if they have not already

@@0jeej0 yes, the referral is very very hard. I kept notes and then put it all together, all the things I do etc and presented to my GP who still took some persuading.. and the main problem for us Women is that we end up having to "sorta" diagnose it ourselves (we must not diagnose it fully without medical help) and then go and try to persuade your GP.. I realised I may have adhd after seeing some video's on youtube and suddenly it started clicking... So we're not supposed to have 100 different thoughts at a time? etc.... I love these videos because although there are many ADHD videos n I don't know if they actually have or just speak on it but I don't relate to most of them. These I highly relate to. So not only is it nice to find people that actually understand me but I could watch these all day because they help a lot. My doctor that diagnosed me made it sound like it's not normal but I've always been great at multitasking n getting things done on time I felt like it was my super power where I know other people struggle with things plus I'm a perfectionist so I don't give up even though I always have multiple things I work on at once lol

Dopamine. Maybe this is why when I sit down at my desk at the office, I’m so unable to focus and only want to stuff my face with any and all food. Gives me that high, wakes me up for maybe 30 minutes- then I’m reaching for my lunch box grabbing another snack. This doesn’t happen when I’m working from home as much at all

I believe this is why I talk a bit more in my work (which WAS call centre and hospitality) because 'I' enjoyed it. The same is with chatting with co-workers, and people in general, as it lifts MY mood, it is also a 'distraction'! This is after more than 30 years working, but I was only diagnosed 12 months ago, aged 53, and AFTER years of mental health issues, AND having reached a 'breakdown' and loss of previous cognitive/executive functioning. What would have happened has I been aware of this years ago, as well as unfortunately having had most employers over the past 10 years that have been absolute A-Holes and making me worse.

💯 I’m supposed to be job hunting … but I’m currently completely obsessed with teaching myself to touch type. What on earth is that about?!
@Raelunil
@Raelunil 2 ай бұрын
Something about job hunting is not stimulating enough at the moment, so your brain picked something with novelty to help you get more dopamine. I suggest going ahead and working on the touch typing, and when your mind is less resistant to job hunting and/or tired of typing practice, switch to trying to job hunt. And if it doesn't work right away, do more little things that make you feel like you've accomplished something. Then try job hunting again. It's all about building up enough dopamine through small achievements to give ourselves what we need to tackle bigger things. I hope this helps! ❤
@Raelunil
@Raelunil 2 ай бұрын
And as a side note, being able to touch type is a VERY valuable work skill! So you're also making yourself more ready for whatever job you get later!
@RayRay-jj4zu
@RayRay-jj4zu 2 ай бұрын
@@Raelunil thank you & also for the advice! You’re right about building up the dopamine supply … I think of it as having to psyche myself up to do the things I hate (applying for jobs is definitely one of my least favorite things) maybe it’s less psyching myself up and more building up the dopamine by indulging in my latest addiction (the typing)

Oddly, i could always get my work done on my job. I found myself doing the racing thing, g but didnt know I had ADHD. At home however, I had NO motivation with most things like bill paying, dishes, etc. I had to make up a boss who would be checking on me in 20 minutes and if the work wasnt done, I'd be fired and fined $5,000. Isn't that pathetic? It's not dopamine positive, but it worked.

not really., but many people with adhd also have a form of autism which IS known to have the symptom you describe. Do not self diagnose yourself, go to your family doctor and tell them you want to be tested for any kind of autism. Many forms are not obvious

Not really . Most people with ADHD will usually feel intense feelings throughout the day, such as intense happiness when you get a dopamine rush from stimulating activities such as video games , or intense sadness depending on if you also suffer from some form of depression, hence it's old name Variance Disorder . The worst part about ADHD emotions is that they are usually exaggerated due to the lack of dopamine in the brain and can lead to impulsive behaviour such as unnecessary arguments and having difficulties in changing perspective.
