I wish there were more specialized doctors like her because our 5 year old has needlessly struggled because of misdiagnoses. Her speech delay was being treated without improvement and we knew it was more going on but they wouldn't test...it took us to move to another state to finally get a solid treatment plan. she is a different kid now - the melt downs and frustrations are so few now. She is actually learning now.

I've struggled my whole life. I've had two stapedectomy procedures, one at 7 and then 16. I'm 37 now. I don't think I have this as bad as the boy described but I've always had some sort of processing issue. I've tried to get help for ADHD but I feel like girls are believed less. I understand circumstances as I live in a rural area with less resources but I'm so frustrated, my whole life I've been told simply anxious. as an adult I feel this really isn't the case for me and want the truth. I've been to audiologist/doctors several times and unsure how to describe what I have experienced my whole life. I'm a mom of a toddler and it's this is hitting home. How I interact with him is impacted. Learning more about this helps me figure out how to describe what's going on. Thank you for the insight.

This is so cool to know about. I'm 43 and have struggled my whole life, not bad, but still It's a struggle and why I have never been able to pick up a foreign language because I can't hear the difference in the sounds.

What about being around those that speak another language? Is it still difficult to hear the difference? They talk fast most of the time

my dr rediagnosed me and she is actually thinking it is APD instead of ADHD now that I am older. They said I may have autism too and not adhd. Weird bc I was diagnosed with adhd at the age of 8, but at age 33 they said apd and autism though. I had speech from 2 yrs old up until I was 16 yrs old. I talked later and had issues with walking too and got PT at age 2 as well. I have issues with reading too, but got better with it over years though. When I was younger, they had to help me form my mouth even with sounds and issues with fine motor and mouth with eating too. I have definitely improved a lot because of early intervention. I do have sensitivity to sounds sometimes (ENT said it is fluid in my ears bc bad allergies they think), sensitive to light and eyes hurt, and don't like to be around crowds either. I like having my space and don't like having a hard time finding things and don't like change bc I do better with familiar. They said in the past it was adjustment disorder with anxiety though. I like it quiet when I read and if it is not quiet, it frustrates me bc I can't read

Thank you for sharing your story. It helps others too; so thank you for your generosity. I've heard other stories too about changes over time. The really meaningful part, it seems to me, is that you are being familiar with your brain and what works for you and for you to get to your goals. What do you think?

Very informative. If a child or an adult has any combination of APD, ADHD and/or mixed receptive expressive language disorder It would be difficult to separate each diagnosis, definitely need speech therapist at Elementary schools

Do girls present differently than boys like adhd? And does APD ever appear around puberty like adhd and become a problem after 12 where it wasnt a problem before 12?

Can a child have APD but not have any learning problems or learning disorders for instance the test well, read well, score well, but communicate poorly, don't understand humor, say what all the time, ask questions about very simple instructions?

Based on the literature I have read I am more convinced my daughter has APD not ADHD , but pediatrician in Fl does not help with referral can you recommend audiologist in south florida specialized in this area

Try the universities. University of Florida def has an audiology department but maybe colleges in South Florida too.
