If your engine is making a noisy 'tappety' sound, it might be time to check and adjust the valve clearances. Haynes manual recommends to check every 20,000 miles or 12months. This maintenance is well overdue for my engine! In this video I run through two different methods for checking and adjusting the clearances on my MK5 Ford Transit 2.5DI engine. I will be following the Haynes manual method and running through another method, the 'rocking' method. In the process, I also replace my leaking rocker cover gasket.
In my opinion the rocking method is much easier to follow as all the valves can be adjusted with only 4 rotations of the crankshaft, whereas the Haynes method requires lots of tweaking to get the valves into the right positions. Please feel free to share your opinions and experiences below. It would be good to know for next time which is the most accurate method for adjusting.
Feel free to use this video as a guide for carrying out the job yourself.
