Need to add this, but after my recent surgery, the assistant principal called me to ask not how I was recovering but if I could help my sub grade to help lighten her workload. I politely told him that I was on FMLA and therefore did not exist at the school, and that doing any work while on medical leave would break my union contract. That shut him up pretty fast! The audacity! 🤷🏻♀️

Good for you to put him in his place!!!! Exactly! When you’re on leave you don’t exist. The audacity!!

I was subbing for a Gov/Economics teacher because he had surgery, so I helped and did a lot, including closing the grade-book and end the senior school year for him, with the help of a senior experienced teacher. That teacher and I had a great year. He got to relax and not worry, while I got to work. BTW, I had to do grading too. NP. If the teacher left me instructions to do it, I will do it. No worries.
@emmawest56882 жыл бұрын
You’re right-teachers should not have to worry about work while they are taking time off to recuperate from surgery, care for a sick child, etc. Before my surgery, I made sure to have some lesson plans in place for my sub to get started. Like Rosie Rose said, at my school our grade level teams help each other out, and my grade level lead told me not to worry about anything and that the grade level team would make sure to help out my sub. My husband also had to take time off a while back for his own medical reason, and he didn’t worry about work at all. He’s also not a teacher, so there’s that. So why is it that we are expected to keep working even when we are unable to do so? (Rhetorical question). As my husband said, if I died during the school year, the school/admin would have to help acclimate the new teacher to the classes.

I had a very ostentatious admin at one of the early schools I worked at. He was always flashing his doctorate around and would get legit upset if someone called him "mister" instead of "doctor" so-and-so. One day he came up behind me at a the staff copier (my back to him with no idea who was behind me) and said my name. I answered "yeah," thinking it was a coworker and then listened to him lecture me up and down about how I needed to work on my professionalism. All I can say is that there is a reason he had great posture, and all credit goes to the stick. So imagine my surprise when, not too many years later, this pillar of moral and professional fortitude was then featured in the local paper, having been arrested and charged as part of a sting operation busting men trolling for prostitutes in a nearby park. Karma is a harsh mistress.

Administration: The Biggest Problem in Public Education
@amylee89692 жыл бұрын
It should be changed from “Public Education” to “public babysitting/therapy”. Admin doesn’t give a shit about education! That’s why some of them require teacher to pass students don’t haven’t turned in a lick of work or won’t require kids to be retained (no matter how poorly they do). at this rate, the state will suffer learning loss forever! That sitting down comment happened to me. I had just got back from being in the hospital for six weeks with pulmonary sarcoidosis and still had ongoing shortness of breath. I sat down at my desk at the end of class, this was about 7 min before the end of the period, to rest a minute and catch my breath as the students were working on something. Principal sends me the “see me” email after coming in and seeing me sitting down. He tells me his spill, I tell him why I was sitting down for a moment, he tells me if I’m unable to work, I should continue my leave. So he would rather have a sub there who teaches nothing than to have me sit down for a minute here and there!

Open your eyes. Academic education is no longer a top priority in schools. The top priority is to provide a baby sitting service while parents are at work. My last school once tried to make us give any student no less than a 50 on any individual assignment, even if they didn't turn anything in. The reasoning was "in college, you mainly get graded on exams, not a bunch of assignments" (if only we were dealing w/ college level people!) and also "you can't give them a 0, because you don't know what grade they would've gotten if they'd turned it in". I told my students that part of our curriculum in the art room was to develop appreciation for art. I also told the students that I spent my own money to buy supplies and equipment that allowed them to have good art experiences. (What the school gave me was less than .50 cents,per student, per year! Not even enough for a pencil!) I expected their artwork to at the very least to make it to their homes to share with their parents. I did not want to find finished art in the garbage out of respect for me and the sacrifice I made in purchasing the supplies. If I found art in my garbage I would subtract the number of points it was worth in the grade book from their final grade. Last day of the semester, I reminded students of this. One student that had an B in my class distorted all her work in front of my face and stuffed into the garbage in front of me. I took it out, totaled the points and corrected her grade from a B to an F. Her mother called the principle, he called me, and asked me to restore her grade. I called her mother and asked her mom to tell me what grade do you want me to give your child. If she wanted her kid to get a fake grade that she didn’t deserve, I wasn’t going to fight about it. There would be many others down the road that would give her daughter the lesson she desperately needed to learn. This is why we have so many entitled kids that enter the work force so wholly unable or unwilling to be responsible! These parents ruin their own kids and torture the teachers thing to develop people with integrity.

One year I had a student who was absent at least four days a week. She had a failing grade for the year. I was asked to change her grade to passing because otherwise, when she reached sixteen, she would drop out of school or get pregnant. I did not change the grade so another teacher changed her grade so that the student had a passing grade and could move on to the next grade.
@marygillespie20282 жыл бұрын
In my state, that's illegal! Only the teacher who gives the grade can change it.

A few years back I was a computer lab parapro. I had air conditioning in the computer lab but it didn't feel like it with all 30 computers on and in constantly use. Everyone left the computer lab looking like a hot mess. The janitor would walk in before school started and say, "It's cold in here, you're fine." The computers aren't on yet! Come back in ten minutes! We're not fine! There was a thermostat but I told it was mainly for decoration. The controls were hot, off, and cold. Hot and cold being whatever they decided the default temp should be. I complained so many times and the janitor would do the same thing. Show up in the morning and report that the room was cold and I was over reacting. At my last job, I had to miss half day of work to get an ultrasound because I had painful gallstones. I had turned in my two weeks notice at that point and they refused to pay out my remaining pto because I took some 4 hours to go to the doctor for my pain. Gallstones are no joke. Luckily we found out that I was having a reaction to some medication that affected the gallstones. Stopped the medicine, and the pain slowly went away within a month. Everyone has gallstones, but usually there's no need to panic unless there's pain.

🤦♀️it’s the 23% issue for me. 🤦♀️ My mom got a call from her ward’s teacher the other day saying “mmm he didn’t complete any of the necessary assignments but we are going to pass him into the next grade anyways.” My mom is actually livid because there shouldn’t be any way in hell he should go into the next grade just based on participation trophy points. We are scheduling a meeting with the staff asap to discuss it and hold him back. If they still insist then we are going to pull him for full time homeschool.

This channel really makes me realize how good of an idea it was for me to move to Denmark to teach. I'm currently still in college in the US but I've got everything set up to move the first moment I can. I'm so incredibly thankful that I have the opportunity to do what I love under better conditions, but man... I'm so sorry for all of you teachers in the US. I had no idea my k-12 teachers were treated this horribly. Instead of giving them mugs and such for teacher appreciation day, I wish I'd given them massagers and Staples gift cards!

I got called to the office because I was putting in a work ticket a few times per week asking for custodial to clean it and they didn’t have time. I was told any time it happened again, I needed to put on a glove and clean it up.

As a TA I had a long term sub teacher in the room, and after I was assaulted on the side of my face/head by a student, she had the audacity after I filled out an incident report to say, "Ms. Jimenez I know you got hurt but could you stay longer (needed to go to urgent care) and fin helping me with these progress report/report cards?" That same woman was lazy, assaulted ME at the end of the year, and got another job in that school by admin the following year, and she tried to take adv of my other colleague who she tried to steal from the year before. Admin liked her despite her laziness and lack of work ethic...

Our middle school has been experiencing multiple issues (fighting, bullying, vaping, vandalizing, tiktok videos) in the bathrooms. Our admin's solution? All teachers take all students to the restroom every period. Yes.....EVERY PERIOD. According to my time gathering, I waste at least 45 min to an hour every day on this. Don't try to skip it or let them go individually because students now view this as a constitutional right even though many of them take the opportunity to go into the bathroom and just stand there (my snitches told me).

The only upshot about admin. being who they are is that it gives kids a valuable lesson as to why they should stay in school and take their education seriously--so that they know who NOT to emulate when they grow up. Because despite their framed diplomas hanging proudly on the walls located in their offices with closed doors and narrow minds attached to them, admin. have proven to the world that neglecting your general education when you are a kid will ultimately turn you into the type of person that runs the average school in America. And having admin. like the average school heads of today is like having had Donald Trump for President. The two parties and their politics in this case are one and the same!
@annaburns28652 жыл бұрын
Actually that is not true. You make it sound like just anyone can be an administrator. Administrators get their jobs because of nepotism. That’s why they don’t care what happens to kids at school or what they did for their own education. Because they always knew they were going to get a cushy job because of whomever their mommy or daddy or aunt or uncle or cousin was. I see a lot of these giant families in the schools and it sickens me. Especially since the rest of the average kids think they can also get by with doing nothing. Those kids that have no connections are in for a rude awakening. Many of them will probably end up in jail or on the streets. That’s the biggest problem with capitalism. It’s not what you know it’s who you know. And how much money the person that you know has. A person just starting out on their own can never reach that potential. These admin are setting kids up for failure because frankly they don’t give a shit. It has to be said.
@munimathbypeterfelton62512 жыл бұрын
@@annaburns2865 Well yes, everything you said is true and I agree with you. And because a person was somebody's friend or relative, that is often how they become in charge of an establishment--because of who they know rather than what they know. And clearly they know very little because they slept right through their education! And people who are not smart tend to achieve because they know more people than they do information and they have more social skills than actual skill sets. So for those reasons, in addition to the ones you mentioned, being a school administrator doesn't require very many qualifications despite what the written job description supposedly entails.

I remember years ago there was a fellow high school teacher who had the most difficult remedial classes, but he was great with them. He ended up out for a while (shingles?), so TWO admin took over the lesson plans and the class. It apparently took them two hours to come up with a 10 minute lesson that bombed. Several of us saw them trying to "collaborate" on making these lessons. It was like watching two squirrels trying to fix a broken down Ford Mustang.

In Indiana, Admins have to have only 3 years in the classroom before they can be un Administration. The exception is in charter schools. In those, administrators don't have to have ANY teaching experience. They don't even have to know anything about education! Just curious - What are the laws in other states?

My 21st and last year of teaching, the admin moved me to a new classroom. I was written up for not having working computers or a bulletin board. Say whut. I requested them SEVERAL times using the appropriate paperwork. Finally, in November, one of the maintenance men from the board office was working in the hallway outside my classroom. I asked him if we had any working computers or bulletin boards stored in the warehouse, and he said, "Hundreds." I showed him the referrals from the administration that had been sent to the superintendent's office. The next morning when I arrived at school, my classroom had a bulletin board on the wall and I had 3 working computers. Praise God for the men and women that keep our schools running.
