I used to cut grass at the house of a vietnam vet and he told me a story about a single shot noob tube grenade launcher. He said he was inside a small bunker that started taking round from the jungle. He went outside with his launcher and a pouch with like 75 rounds in it. He said it was like time slowed down from the adrenaline and he thought he only launched about ten rounds in the direction they thought the shots were from. He said when he got back inside the bunker and checked the pouch it was completely empty. You could still see the fear in his eyes as he told me the story. The eerie nature of jungle warfare was the perfect setting for this movie.

About Panama - I wasn't there personally but in the mid 90's I went to rent Predator from a Blockbuster Video when it was in it's hay day (I'm about 15 years older than you). I had never seen it before because I was too young and my parents wouldn't let me. Anyway I get up to the counter with the movie an there's a dude there, maybe mid to late 20's and starts talking about how he trained and deployed with an M16 like they had in the movie when he was in the Marines. I asked him about his service and he said he took part in the invasion and absolutely hated it because of the climate. Anyways he said he and his unit/squad would constantly makes references and jokes about the movie because it was huge at the time and there was no better setting for it (especially the "get to tha choppa!" line). Maybe not the best/funniest story but, if he is to be believed, what you're describing definitely happened. As an aside, he also said they came across a warehouse that had one of those older DOS computers in it, used for shipping or inventory or something. The place was deserted and he thought it would be "fun" to shoot one of them so he did. Well somehow the owner found out about it, went to the Americans and complained, and the dude had to end up paying to replace the system out of his paycheck or face punishment lol. Every time I would go in there and he'd be working I'd call him "Panama". He got a kick out of that.

Fun fact, the events of Predator take place in the fictional country of Val Verde in 1987. The Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Commando also takes place in Val Verde but in the year 1985. In Commando, Arius is the former dictator of Val Verde that John Matrix helped removed from power. At the end of Commando, John kills Arius and destroys his compound. This means that the guerillas that Dutch and his team fight could be the remnants of Arius' men who survived the events of Commando and retreated into the jungles of Val Verde and began planning the Soviet-backed invasion that Dillion was sent to stop. Or this is just my autistic head canon and it makes no sense at all...

28:52 I did a semester abroad in Kenya. We were out in the Masai Mara for a while. Obviously they were worried that one of the foolish Americans was going to do something stupid like take a selfie with a lion, so they sent over this experienced hunter guy, an "Askari" they called him. Talked to him a bit, but his poor English and my non-existent Swahili made it difficult. Basically, he was really patient with riding herd on us, and made sure that we weren't drug away by Hyenas on the way to the latrines. Had some pretty cool stories (as much as I could interpret), and described his first and second lion hunts. Tough as nails with giant brass balls doesn't quite do him justice. One of our guides knew from from back in the day and said he was a badass, who was taking a break from his badassery, and thought we were entertaining to watch stumble around almost getting eaten every few hours or so. I think he thought it was cute, like watching a puppy learning to walk and falling over. Not in a mean way, but guy was somewhat older than us and WAY more mature. One girl wanted to rinse some stuff off in the nearby river, he kinda put out his arm like "hold up", and then with a patient smile pointed out the hippos laying mostly submerged on the far bank and made "chomping" sounds while clapping his palms together 😂 which had me rolling. It was like "No, you silly girl, you'll get eaten. You want to get eaten?" 🤣

I can explain the thermals, black/white vs color scale. I worked at NASA for 2-3 years doing IR measurements using FLIR cameras. The difference in camera signature is due to an IR camera being strictly an infrared camera (gray scale) vs a thermographic camera (color scale). The gray scale image lacks the ability to provide a temperature because it is not calibrated. It can, however, provide a higher signal to report an image as "hot" or "cold", providing greater dynamic range at the expense greater noise in the data. Temperature-calibrated cameras (color scale) are excellent for data capture but are limited to a preset range (-40 to 300F, for example) and therefore are limiting themselves with how much radiation can excite the camera sensor. I'm leaving out a lot of details to make this short, but I hope you learned something.

I love critical drinkers' review of this movie, thanks for doing this admin. One of the best movies ever made. 85' - 95' would have been an amazing time to live through.

One of my favourite films, but for some reason, it's not made it onto my film sleeve tattoo 🤔

I’m old enough I saw this in the theatre when it came out, I love it for all the same reasons you do. You have good taste in film.
