I've used acetone and an acetone based solvent for 30 yrs, it cleans the pcb's and makes them look like new as well as on vcrs and belts..!! Anyone that says it's bad doesn't know what they're talking about. Good job Steve.!

You with the acetone and 12voltvids with his electricians/linemans splicing scissors. It's hilarious to see everyone blowing a gasket in the comments over what is just a different method of doing things.

Bought a $10 VCR from a thrift store that.. It ejected the tape as soon as you try to stick it in and that's all that it would do. Through watching a handful of your videos intently. I have resurrected it to working status. You by far have the best videos and content on the subject matter. You are greatly appreciated

I see no problem with using acetone (or methylated spirit/alcohol) to clean and de-glaze rubber rollers and belts - and a cracked pulley can be glued (cheaper and easier than ordering a part which could take weeks to arrive). Cleaning heads and tape path is routine. Good to see the belts hadn't melted and left a gooey black mess everywhere which would be a royal pain to remove. Awesome, and simple repair. :) ~ * the dislikes for this video are probably from people who "restore" vintage electronics with nothing more than a screwdriver, water and a hair dryer *

I have a total of 3 VCR's that have a problem. I'm working on saving VHS tapes that I've recorded over many years to a digital format and I have only one working VCR. I'm hoping to get at least 2 of these repaired. The VCR's I have is a Sony SLV-N700, a Sony VCR/DVD combo SLV-D360P and I purchased a used JVC HR-XVC11 (which is a VCR/DVD combo) from Goodwill to have a second working VCR (it was the only one they had). The Sony SLV-N700 tries to load a VHS tape, and before it's completely loaded, you can hear (and see with the cover off) the rewind take up wheel spinning. Before the tape fully loads it ejects. Sometimes the tape does fully load, but the tape indicator on the front display flashes. The Sony SLV-D360P VCR/DVD combo, a couple tapes broke while winding a tape. Now when trying to load a tape, it won't load. The only way it'll load is to spin the loading motor to get the tape to load ... however even though it loads the spindles don't move and it sometimes ejects the tape ... however when it ejects, the tape isn't taken up. The JVC HR-XVC11 VCR/DVD combo (the one bought from Goodwill) started to work fine, but the audio cut out and now there is no audio. Any ideas and can these be repaired for a reasonable price??

The first 2 probably have oxidized mode select switches, they do all sorts of random stuff when oxidized. the 3rd one, Is it VHS-HiFi, and are the tapes recorded in HiFi format? If not it may need a tape path alignment and/or a very good cleaning.
@john_thorpe3 жыл бұрын
@@norcal715 I'll have to see if I can find the mode select switches on these and do a cleaning and see if that helps.

@@norcal715 One thing I did note before this issue, was when I was rewinding or fast forwarding a tape. When it got to the end of the tape (or beginning when rewinding) the fast forwarding (or rewinding) would do it in spurts. Say I was fast forwarding the tape from the beginning, it would slowly wind around 1 min and 27 seconds before it engaged the hi-speed winding (I'm guessing to verify both spindles are turning), then it slows down to a slower speed near the end of the tape. Around 30 mins to the end of the tape, it would wind slowly and in spurts... like someone was holding on one of the spindles to stop it then letting it go and stopping it again over and over again ... sometimes that stops and it used the slower winding speed to reach the end of the tape, sometimes not. From what I've seen this didn't have any similar affect when using the play option.

@@norcal715 As for the JVC it says it's a Hi-Fi (all of them are Hi-Fi), the recordings were done mostly on the Sony SLV-N700 which is a Hi-Fi unit. When playing a tape in the JVC unit (I got from the Goodwill) it started out with audio. I left it to run connected to a device that converts it to a digital file, so not sure when the audio went out. However, trying the tape again from the beginning where I heard it play audio before, only this time no audio. I put the same tape in the only working one I have right now (which is a Sony SLV-D370P - a VCR/DVD combo) and the audio plays. I did use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean the heads, the erase head and the audio head ... actually the whole tape path multiple times, and still no audio on the JVC unit.
