Thanks for the video! These have a silky smooth vhs load/eject function. The build seems way more solid than other models from this period.

Gluing a cracked gear as opposed to trying to obtain a new-old-stock replacement that may no longer be available is often the best solution - excellent repair.

You could also 3-D print a replacement gear if you know what exactly it looks like, it is only plastic after all.

Nice to see someone who knows all the parts to a VCR. Capstan motor, mode selector switch, erase heads, etc. Great video. It's just what I needed to see to repair my own VCR/DVD combo.

I can't thank you enough! Trying to convert some old home movies to digital format and the VHS player we had was eating all the tapes. You did such a wonderful job of explaining everything and you were so thorough! I didn't have any broken gears but after a good cleaning everything seems to be running nicely! Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Good work! A few suggestions: instead of using hot glue, I highly recommend looking into cement for use with building plastic models, that stuff forms a more permanent seal since it actually melts the plastic together. Also, instead of using a Q tip to clean the head drum, I simply wet a piece of printer paper with isopropyl alcohol, hold it against the drum, and turn a few times. Its a lot safer than using a Q tip since the fibers can catch onto the tiny heads inside and mess things up if you aren't extremely careful.

I had a Samsung vcr once where I put a tape in, and when the vcr loaded the tape, the vcr began fast forwarding and rewinding the tape back and forth at a super high rate of speed to where the gears made a loud grinding sound as the tape switch from fast forward to rewind and back to fast forward, and it scared me to death to see it act that way!

This was a nicely done video. I didn't know anyone still worked on VCR machines. I wonder how long that gear will hold up before it goes or another plastic part breaks.

This video shows clearly that the one made by LG Electronics instead (Go Video DVR4200) is far superior in reliability. A lot of them are still running today trouble-free for over 20 years, and no one has posted a KZbin repair video yet.

I've also heard to only use paper to clean the video heads and being that you've done it with q-tips since about 1983, obviously there's something to your technique. When you mentioned that the heads can take considerable force left to right, but almost none up and down, it made me wonder if that was what actually caused people to ruin the heads. That they would inadvertently (or purposely, without realizing it) scrub up and down to clean the heads which would then cause them to ruin the video heads. Any thoughts? Thanks for sharing your expertise with us, by the way, it is much appreciated!

That split gear could be fixed with small aluminum strap across crack and some really small self-tappers.

Hey NorCal, great vid, I appreciate you going so in-depth, I have this exact same model. But, if I can ask a question, I have another Samsung VCR that when the tape goes in and is grabbed by the rollers, they only move slightly, pause, then spit the tape back out. Is this a tape sensor issue or something more? Thanks!

Nylon gears... Are those parts even available any longer..?? Was a time when VCR parts were readily available.

Frankie Pitochelli print it with a 3d printer if no longer available. But printing nylon isn’t easy. PLA should work too.

I have a question for you - I have a VCR that has the same problem. When playing the tape, the tape spills out into the machine (the same way you see here) instead of retracting back into the cassette. If I fast forward the tape, the right reel would intermittently stop spinning causing the tape to spill out. The same thing happens when rewinding the tape. Would it be the same same gear causing this? I'm a bit scared taking the VCR apart because I probably won't remember how to put it all back again.

I Have a question on a different GO VIDEO VCR model. It’s a dual deck VCR. The unit will not power on, but when it’s plugged in all you hear is a buzzing sound coming from to top left corner near the power cord entrance.

Probably a power supply issue. Possibly a shorted component or bad capacitor/capacitors.

I have a question. My VCR is a Toshiba 4 head HI FI stereo. When I put a vhs in it plays for about 3 seconds and then stops (doesn’t eject the vhs). When I opened up the VCR and press play it has loose tape towards the “take up” side (no dents just excess) then after 3 seconds it stops and puts the tape back into the vhs. At which point I can eject the vhs. Do you know what the issue could be?
@norcal715
@norcal715 3 жыл бұрын
Is it taking the tape up when playing, or spilling the tape after the pinch roller/capstan? They have reel rotation detection if take up is not detected it will shut the machine down to protect the tape.

Because hot-melting plastic is not always reliable and isn't strong. It also looks crude. Gluing the old broken piece is recommended when a new replacement part is unavailable.
