I’d say the core of doctor who is to be educational. I appreciate it coming back to its roots. It’s just weird to people because Moffat was so over the top whimsical.

As someone who's seen every existing episode, I find it interesting that Chibnall has taken Who back in some ways to it's origins. Historic education in it's storyline from time to time. The problem is that we're used to story arcs, a dangerous threat that could destroy the universe etc. Who 2018 plays safe. I don't mind in some ways. Give us a series to get used to Jodie BUT seriously raise the threat levels in series 12 when we've really got to know the 13th Doctor by then!

Story arcs and over use of Chekhov's gun. Not every throw away line needs an opera.

Teaching history was originally part of Doctor Who's mission as a show. And these history episodes have been wow OMG instructive.

I enjoyed this Episode. Don't forget one of the reasons for Doctor Who was to tell Children about History.

I agree. That doesn't mean they couldn't tell the Children about History. Which they did.

The popular era of the show was the Baker days, where there was practically no educational stuff at all. And if there was, it was done subtly.
@Payne2view6 жыл бұрын
Mr Chibnall may not have thought about why Dr Who stopped being so much of a "history lesson" show, why that aspect was played down over the years?

Robert Payne. I personally Love Classic Who because there was so much information about Historical Times. I am Glad Chibnall is bringing that back. They were Interesting Times and affected many People.

Gametroller Prime. Over the 7 years Tom was the Doctor most of his time was spent in the future or, at the time, present day Earth. Though I remember he was in Medieval Times, Victorian Times and Edwardian Times.

I loved this episode as much as Rosa (which reminded me of The Time Meddler). The original statement that Sidney Newman wanted for classic Doctor Who was educational, so there were a lot of historical stories (and with no aliens) such as The Aztecs, The Reign of Terror, The Romans, The Massacre, The Gunfighters and The Highlanders. The BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters) such as the Daleks made the series popular. Its refreshing to not have over the top stories with weird creatures in stupid plots arcs points forced into stories which happened a lot in Moffat's time, but we do need a story with an evil threat to really test the Doctor and gang. Love that we have a Yaz centred story for once and I think Bradley is wonderful as Graham.

Just a little note to say I've been watching your doctor who reactions for what feels like years (s8?? Maybe) and I love them. Something about your voice is very calming and your comments are insightful and considered. Definitely one of my favourite reactors. Somehow I was never subscribed but I am now 😊

I actually don't mind a history lesson, as long as it's good, and I think it was. And I liked the aliens in this episode. Much better than the Pa'ting from the previous episode. I think the aliens here added excitement and a good mystery to the first half of the episode. I also liked the plot twist - how they turned out to be the good guys instead of the bad guys. I also don't mind historical stories, as I said as long as they're done well, because the first three or four seasons of classic Doctor Who did that, and I'm a huge fan of that show. I actually think this was my favorite episode in this season so far. I think it had the best story and was the most emotional for me at least.

Jero Briggs I agree with your comment, and I fell a little bit in love with Jodie's Doctor in this episode . I have been waiting and hoping for that feeling . For me it has been so much change all at once that in made me feel like this is not the show I fell in love with . I came into this season with an open mind and an open heart really just rooting for the show , but have found myself struggling to connect . This episode connected me to the Doctor . For the first time I didn't feel as though she was acting like a Doctor, but she was the Doctor. The 13th doctor. ( well maybe the 13th doctor )

I personally understand your points, and I'm being honest. It's an intriguing episode with interesting twists and a premise that feels both mysterious and engaging, the story is also very smooth and cohesive though the drama angle of the story quickly gets shifted into intrigue (and drama is what this story was actually aiming for), there's also a good moral behind it, but I get when you say it's a "history lesson" because there is a very heavy educational background and if the tone or the pacing of the stories isn't flexible enough to convey the kind of message they want to tell, it could feel more like a "history lesson" rather than a "field trip", which is technically what Doctor Who usually feels like - there's a certain fantastical aspect behind it and there's usually a faster pacing and a more excited tone to convey that magical part of Doctor Who, since Doctor Who is a "sci-fi fantasy drama". I don't mind the educational part, especially when it justifies the questions we may have as viewers (which I always felt was missing), but to convey the proper message overall, it needs a proper tone, pacing and premise imo, and shifting those throughout the season could also help changing flavours, for instance: I felt Rosa had the right tone and characterization that satisfies the sci-fi, fantasy and drama for a story that tackled very tough issues, episodes 4 and 5 were more fantastical in comparison, but the tone still feels very consistent or even linear, so it feels at times like you're still eating the same dish from episode 3 in appearance, but not quite as right in taste, while still digesting the previous ones. Sometimes it works, sometimes it could feel a bit like that. Not related, but I even watched a series recently that tackled a serious historical drama that goes into very dark, mature subjects at times, but I was having a blast with it because it shifts the tone, the pacing and the premise in the same time as Doctor Who, the stories are also somewhat disjointed from each other and there's even a very theoretical/scientific background that is the magical part of that show, but does all that very subtly and in a very exciting way, something that I think might be missing in series 11's formula. I think some excitement of that magical aspect may be missing, leaving sci-fi, education and drama doing most of the hard work.

Maybe the aim of the Conundrum was not to have the 50th base of under attack episode with a "scary" alien, but try something fresh. I am bored to death by standard monsters of the week. They have been done too often in the new series.

This episode is very much going back to the original concept of the series. And it was well done in this case. But I think that episodes like this should be rare, no more than one or two each series. One odd thought I had after the episode ended; who/what destroyed the planet of the Thijarian? For some reason I feel that fact may return at some future point but don't ask me to speculate further. Just a hunch.

2:10 Unfortunally it was a thought I also had before i saw the episode "Demons of the Punjab". And now (since I like this one more, than those two before) I'm a bit nervous. Let's see what we can say at the end of dies series.

There are only three options, past present or future. So a fair proportion are going to have a historical setting. So long as the episode is also entertaining what's wrong with education? People these days don't understand how the world was shaped. The hands that we had in the creation or religious hatred. We only progress as a species if we learn the lessons of the past. This is the fundamental truth.

I enjoyed this episode very much. One thing I was wondering. So we thought the aliens killed the holy man therefore the doctor had to step in to perform the ceremony. But if the younger brother actually did it then what was different this time? He could have shot the guy if his only motive was to stop the wedding whether Jas, the doctor or even the aliens/demons and co were there or not. In other words her nan wouldn't have actually married.

@@gametrollerprime1594 In Rosa they were not a part of history; if you remember, when Ryan was trying to convince people to wait for the bus, there were 4 people that decided to walk home instead of waiting; the Doctor and the companions filled the seats those 4 people would have occupied; in Demons of the Punjab they would have probably celebrated the marriage anyway, even without the holy man.

I thought it was a great episode. However, I think Chibnall going back to the "history lesson" origins of the conception of Dr Who 55 years ago may risk forgetting that there was probably a reason Dr Who stopped being history lesson oriented.

It's quite OK to be unsure about a story and need more time to think about it, by the way. Some people are very 'digital' in that they see things as either fantastically wonderful or dismally awful forgetting shades in between. As it happened, I quite enjoyed this episode and I don't think I'll easily forget it. So far my own ranking of the episodes are 3, 6, 2, 4, 1 and 5. Which are yours?

Theres a reason why old Who was cancelled... sorry.. its true. when it was revived the show was more about adventure/story arcs and has been for over 10 years.. to change it so suddenly is probably why its getting mixed reviews imo
