Hello Priscilla, thanks for watching. The shirt actually says “don’t underestimate an old lady who reads books and is born in August”.😊 to make it even more specific green is the color of August birthstone the peridot. Aloha friend.

Admiring a book versus enjoying/loving a book is something I think about all the time, so I loved seeing your thumbnail! Ha, "It's a book about a book...and not a very good book." I'm curious about Still Born based on your review. I don't know that I'd connect with it either but you still make it sound intriguing. I've got to get to Barbara Pym! On a non-bookish note, that green is lovely on you (and that shirt is awesome).

Hi Lindy, so far the only book I liked by Muriel Spark was a far cry from Kensington. That was Nancy Peal’s recommendation in her book. I hope to enjoy future books by her, especially the pride of Miss Jean Brodie. Sending you lots Aloha

Hi Maya! I know exactly what you mean about admiring vs enjoying a particular style of writing. Best is when I experience both reactions to the same book! That’s how I felt about Still Born. I really enjoyed being inside of Laura’s troubled head, seeing life from her point of view. An example of admiring but not enjoying is the only novel I have read by Barbara Pym: Excellent Women. I do enjoy dark comedy and so Muriel Spark is an author I both admire and enjoy. I believe she uses repetition intentionally in Loitering with Intent, for it’s comedic effect, although I haven’t actually read Loitering with Intent, so I’m not certain of that. It’s perhaps how the Booker jury interpreted her use of repetition.

Good morning! I think "admire" is a more positive word for my feelings about the books I don’t enjoy. I'm impressed with the efforts the authors have put into the books and hope there are readers who truly enjoy them (although lots of people read them because they think they should), but I don't admire them. There are so many books I want to read that I will enjoy and there's not enough time to get to them all!! I am much better about DNFing now than ever before. This is a very thought provoking video! Thank you.

Hi BJ, i’m much better about DNFg a book now, but it’s those books that I’m not sure about until I finish that gave me the idea. I love what she said about people who think they should read a book even if they don’t enjoy it. i’m at the age where I don’t need to impress anyone with my reading skills😊 I will never read war and peace. Thank you so much for watching. Aloha friend.

I really appreciate your nuance here as you talk very specifically about why you don’t quite enjoy particular books. I need to give Muriel Spark a reread sometime; it has been years and I have almost no memory of it (which might say something!).

Hello Hannah, I did enjoy one of Muriel Sparks books, a far cry from Kensington, which was recommended by the librarian (and) author Nancy Pearl I never use a script.Often when I rewatch I think my words are inelegant so I appreciate your kind comment . Shalom and aloha.

I picked up Still Born on the booktuber meet up in March but haven't read it yet. I am intrigued by your reaction. I wonder how I will feel? I didn't know that about Simenon and Colette.

I hope you enjoy it. Many have. The double narration made me hyperaware that I was reading a book. Thank you for commenting. Aloha friend.

I was just thinking about this exact idea and trying to compile a list of books that I admire but didn’t like/enjoy. I hope you won’t mind if I make a video about this (crediting you).

I have never been able to get thru a Sparks book either. But unlike you I have given up. So many books to read and I have tried w Muriel, just not for me. I like this topic. I need to think about the books that have fallen into this category for me.
