Yeah. At first, I was thinking, "I believe your concerns were completely well-founded, Cody". I couldn't believe you'd been talked into screwing into the endgrain. But your actual solution will work. Will it be as strong as a panel running all the way and tranferring the load through the bottom to the concrete slab and the earth beneath? No. But it should be strong enough to withstand any load that won't burst through the plywood lid. Call it done.
