Hi Mike. Firstly, thank you so much for continuing to put these videos out - they are invaluable to anyone working in audio. Secondly, I wanted to ask definitively, when you would use which tools for which purposes when it comes to getting nicely-levelled audio. Most of the time, I'll use compression to get my levels even. But when would it be better to use Match Loudness? And if so, would that replace the need to compress? Or would you then do compression having matched the loudness? Apologies if it's a stupid question but often there seem to be a hundred ways to achieve the same result and I'm never sure which is the best one! I find that match loudness doesn't bring up room noise/echo in a way that compression does for example. Thank you in advance. You're doing the work of the audio gods!
@MikeRussell Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Compression and Match Loudness serve different purposes. Use compression to even out dynamics within a track. Match Loudness ensures consistent volume across multiple tracks. Often, you'd compress first, then match loudness. If Match Loudness gives cleaner results without compression, go with that. Always trust your ears!

I suspect you should have a warning that this Video could trigger Light Sensitive Epilepsy.. It's pretty bad. If this were in the US you would certainly find yourself in court if it triggered a Fit and caused injury.. Sorry but you should consider putting warnings in your Title to avoid a law suite..

Hi Mike, in other videos you've said the best recording level is in the yellow. Does this rule apply to post-production as well? I'm wondering because when I match loudness to -16LUFs, it hits the red a lot. Of course, this is because I set the Max True Peak Level to -3. Does this mean I should be setting the Max True Peak level lower? Or is it not a big deal when audio hits the red, as long as it's matched to -16LUFs and you're not actively recording? For reference, even when my audio is hitting the red at -3db, it doesn't sound blown out or distorted. Thanks for all your videos, they're super helpful!
@MikeRussell2 жыл бұрын
Recording should be between -6 and -3db. Loudness levels for finished products depend on what your producing.

Hey, what's the difference between Audition's Match Loudness and Premiere's Dynamics effects? It seems both of them are used for compression, so I don't get what the difference is between the two.
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
Match loudness is a change in amplitude (with no compression). Dynamics will actually compress the audio.

Mike- I do a Podcast with a pretty good amount of layering. Should I be applying the Loudness standard to each file in my mix individually or just to the final mix?
@adamspeaking3736 жыл бұрын
No don't apply loudness/normalization to each file. If I were you I would run your final mix through leveling and normalization using the Auphonic service. No one comes close to what they're doing over there. It is an added step, but for layered podcasts with a lot of level dynamics it's VERY much worth it. As a professional voice talent and long-time podcast consultant that service has saved me and my clients many times.
@michaelhotten7526 жыл бұрын
@@adamspeaking373 thanks for that. I have used Auphonic for several years. It works great, most of the time. Occasionally it will mess with some of my fades, especially when I am running music under another element. So was thinking my work flow maybe off.

Hello Mike. It's me again in one of your other videos. :) Do you have any video tutorial you've made on setting ACX mastering on Adobe Audition? My True Peak Aptitude and my Peak Aptitude give me issue; once I set True Peak to range -3 to -3.5, then Peak Aptitude drops to -2. Then I set Peak Aptitude again to range -3 to -3.5, then True Peak drops to -2, they are giving me issue as they go back and forth! I really need to get the two values to -3 or -3.5, to meet ACX specs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks always.

Hi, did you ever get a resolution to this? I'm facing almost the same problem. Everytime I set my Peak to -3. 0-3.5 , my RMS drops to about 14 or so. And if I set my RMS to btwn minus 18 Nd 23 , the peak value jumps to about 11 . I'm so stressed .

Match volume to -16 LUFS. My audio is peaking around -3dB and after running match loudness with -3dBTP is still looking horribly compressed and with hard cut-off.
@MikeRussell5 жыл бұрын
It will do a hard limit. Take the amplitude down for less drive.

@@MikeRussell Many thanks Mike, much appreciated! I think I understand this now. I guess I need to apply some compression to my clip first.
