Adopted From The Animal Rescue - Meet Our New Cat! - Tulsa SPCA

Meet the new kitten we just adopted from the animal shelter! He's a little ball of cute with lots of love, energy and patience. We haven't named him yet but we will once we see more of his personality. We were originally going to adopt another cat named Frost but several obstacles stood in our way which made the adoption process difficult and the ultimate decision was made not to adopt him when we found out he was very sick with a highly contagious problem which may be permanent. The last thing we'd want to do is get Sparta sick. So we wish little Frost all the best on getting well and finding a home and we sincerely hope that his sickness isn't what we think it is. If anyone is interested in adopting Frost after he recovers, please contact the Tulsa SPCA for more info on him. He's a really sweet boy but he needs a bit of time with the vet.

There's good news, bad news and GREAT NEWS! The good news is, we were able to adopt a cat but the bad news is that the cat we were originally going to adopt ended up being very sick and there's a chance that what he has may not only be permanent but also very contagious. So we chose to not take the risk of getting Sparta sick because he is an older cat and that just wouldn't be right. Now for the GREAT NEWS! We found our cat and the connection I have with him is quite a bit stronger than it was with Frost. Not to say that Frost wasn't a great cat. So we brought our new boy home and everything is going very well.

URIs are very common in rescues and shelters. They come and go and can generally be knocked out with a round of antibiotics. I'm sure the other kitty will be fine!

He could have adopted the other kitty and got it treated. People think sick animals do not need homes. It's always the sick ones that get put down.

@@darianroscoe1017 That depends on the facility. Not all put down sick animals. Some DO isolate and treat them. They also may have a policy against adopting out sick animals. The rescue where I volunteer does.

Recuses and the SPCA have strict rules on adopting ill animals, it's a liability thing. It's nothing against the adoptee, it's just they don't want the animal to turn up dead.

Usually the delay in introductions isn't to ease the introductions but rather to clear up any latent illness or let any pathogens die so that they don't infect your resident cat. If you introduce kids to cats early enough and supervise them, they learn how to behave. My nephew is 2 and he has three cats running around the house, all of whom he's known from the very beginning. He's just as gentle as Chell is.

I am sorry about Frost, I hope he or she will get healthy and find a home. This little guy looks like one of my old cats. She was a sweet kitty named Shadow. You know the only flaw our furry families have is? They don’t live long enough.

I had 2 that lived a nice long happy life, one lived to be 15-1/2 years old, the other, which was a year younger than the first lived to 18-1/2 years old. He would have lived probably another 5-10 years according to the vet we took him too after some dimwitted vet tech performed what should have been a routine procedure on him {take blood from his front paw only for a cat that age, but this doofus took it out of his "juggler vein in his throat!} and that is what actually ended up killing him. If she'd have taken out of his front paw where she was told too, he could have possibly lived another 5-10 years, when we had to euthanize him. Because this caused him to be extremely scared and caused his lymph nodes to go into cancer, he couldn't walk with his back legs, could only drag himself with his front legs and that was very difficult for him to do. His lungs filled up with fluid and if the vet could have gotten the one lung to drain and stay drained he may have made it, he also could no longer regulate his body temperature. And when I called the dadburn vet telling her that he was having issues with walking after the procedure on Friday, that he needed to come in and be SEEN NOW! I just got blown off with watch him over the weekend and let me know on Monday how he's doing. Monday came, he was worse, and all I got was watch him and let me know how he's doing on Tuesday. What the ??? Why do you keep blowing me off, did YOUR TECH DO SOMETHING TO HIM THAT CAUSED THIS and YOU'RE REFUSING TO SEE HIM BECAUSE I MAY SUE YOU IF HE DIES? Got HUNG UP ON! So called the original vet he used to go to and he wanted to see him IMMEDIATELY! We took him in, but it was too late, because of that Vet and her STUPID, IDIOTIC, MORONIC VET TECH that DID NOT LISTEN! His old vet tried so hard to get him back to health, but, sadly it was not to be, so we had to euthanize him. Even the vet and the vet tech were both in tears because he{the vet} said this cat IS NOT READY TO GO, he is so full of life, and I can tell he has been very well loved, he wants to stay, but because of his condition, he'd have to live in a heated cage and be brought to the vet every day to drain his lung that kept refilling with fluid. And he'd have to travel in a special heated cage to/from the vet. So we all agreed the best thing for him was to euthanize him, and I apologized to my cat profusely that we had to put him to sleep, not that I wanted to, but because of your condition I have to do this. He looked at me like he understood every word I was saying. I probably cried for 3 months after losing him {and I'm a guy!} I never thought losing him would be so hard on me, but it was. Fortunately we had another cat move in before he took ill, when he did take ill, the other cat took very good care of him, he would actually lift him up and over so he could get in the litter box after this illness came on him. He even took him out of the litter box when he was finished with his business. He would even clean him up when he took him out of the litter box since his back legs no longer worked. Never had I seen a cat do that for another cat in my life. And now this particular cat is now my therapy cat, and he helps me cope with a lot of things now like this. I love him {and all my cats} just as much as I loved the one I lost after all those years. Vet said he wouldn't have been surprised if the cat we had to euthanize didn't live to be 25 or 30 years old, if what happened to him had never happened. Did I sue the vet/vet tech that did this?, no. But looking back on it now, I think I should have! She and her tech cost me a very dear furry friend that I loved immensely.

Our Shadow, was a solid black house panther, and an awesome cat. We lost him last week at age 16, (he would have been 17 on June 15th.) Our other two cats are acting a bit weird now that Shadow is gone. Jinx misses him, but Kaity definitely does not. (they didn't get along from the time Kaity was a kitten and she's 15 now so, long feud with a sad ending.)

@@PJ_the_tortie Thank you. I've had a lot of pets in my life, but this guy was very special too me. He knew when I was feeling sick, low, sad and would always come and be at my side or lay on my stomach and purr. He had the most unique and unusual purr, most cats just purr, but this guy had a double purr. When he purred, you could also hear an echo of the first purr start after the first one had started and when the first one ended you heard the 2nd one end soon after. You could hear them both at the same time, that's what was so unusual and unique about his purr. I've never heard a cat purr like he did, it was extremely unique, and probably rare. He's the only cat I know or heard of that ever purred like this. And I tell everyone I know with a pet cat now, NOT to go to this particular veterinarian, and give them the name of the facility. Now if you want your cat to end up dead, just keep on going there. But I will never go there or recommend them to anyone. When we first went there, they appeared to be a great place, turns out they're best with birds and dogs, but don't do too well with cats. A lesson I learned a bit too late I'm afraid. So from now on I really check a place out thoroughly before taking my cats there.

So glad everything is working out for the new kitty. Even though we wish we could, we cant save them all, but we do what we can. And with the new kitty being young, I think he will get along with Sparta just fine. Hopefully they will be good friends quickly, and Sparta’s spirits will brighten.
