It's so amazing and sweet that, minutes after this little girl is born, she's up, she's exploring, and then trying to figue out how to suckle...with a little help from her friends 🤗 And that boy is SO curious, again minutes after her birth. What a beautiful site to see. Ivy should be really proud of herself. What a beautiful miniature donkey. I never seen a burst like that before. The most exciting that ever happened to my sister and I was when our cat Jennifer years ago. Had five kittens but lost. Actually, she had six kittens. But lost one during the birth. We were really happy to see our cats babies, but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them. Congratulations again that’s great. Ivy must be one proud mama.

What a cutie lil babe. I wanted to say, in the beginning, I got upset at the fact that you were moving a water bucket & laying hay around her as she was pushing. (I AM aware of why the hay was needed, I just felt it could have been done beforehand) I felt that she needed some quiet time during that special moment...but, as I continued watching, I could hear in your voice the gentleness that you had for her AND her foal. THAT trumped any moving of buckets & hay. You did a FANTASTIC job helping Ivy bring her babe into the world. Great job! Your professionalism, calmness & caring shined! Thank you for helping Ivy in making sure she was safe & comfortable!

Thank-you for your kind words. And I am very glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately donkeys gestations can range from 11-14 months - there is no predicting a "before hand" with these guys. You do it when it happens - if we put hay down before hand these guys can quickly become overweight and have metabolic issues from overeating which could be detrimental to them and their babies.

Animals aren’t human. These donkeys are well domesticated and used to people handling them all the time and this donkey chose to foal during the middle of the day while we were doing supper chores and there was lots of people around so she’s not worried about the presence of people. The donkeys will also bray loudly when when of their friends is in labor. They do not mind noise.

I think you do a great job with the donkeys birth etc but I don’t agree with the people who will be owning the foal being in there distracting the foal from bonding with her Mum and suckling. I appreciate they are excited .I would not have done it myself as the feeding is very important as is Mums bond with the baby.Interfering can lead to rejection and a bottle fed baby..I have watched you a lot of times and have not seen you let this happen before.The most important thing to concentrate in with births is the Mum and baby ,not the person who is going to own the baby afterwards. Once baby was settled ,feeding it would have been different.Also it was a distraction to the other donkeys at the back.

We have done this 100s times and not once had a rejection in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep or alpacas. We are trained veterinary professionals. Foals are quite delicate when they are born, it’s important that a neonatal foal reaches certain milestones and that its development is managed appropriately. There are many variabilities and eventualities that will dictate how this foal’s life will unfold, our main job in this process is to notice if something is amiss. While many foal births may go just fine without anyone in attendance, we’ve experienced many that haven’t and we would have lost mare and foal had we not been there. We’ve also got a lot invested in this baby, and I’m not leaving anything to chance. Once the critical timelines are met (birth, umbilical dipped, standing, nursing, passing meconium, mare passes placenta, and both monitored for any pain and medicated as necessary) then the mare and foal are left to continue to bond for several hours and we monitors via cameras and go in the stall to clean it, feed and water the mare and check the foals vitals as needed.

I disagree. IMO they would say "Go away and let us take care of it like for a million years!" At one point, the noisy, fussy, anxiety-making lady says, "we had to assist," but why? Amazing to watch. Every donkey is born with a cross on their backs. From the mane down. Some say its because mary rode on a donkey into Bethlehem whilst in labour with Jesus Christ! Ive always found it an endearing story ❤

I don’t know what is normal but I cannot imagine a gaggle of excited females gushing over the birth is helpful to momma and baby. I should imagine quiet and as little noise or intervention as possible would be ideal. I appreciate your joy and desire to provide excellent care, but momma and baby need solo bonding time, not a birthday party.

Good thing animals don't think like humans. They aren't shy or embarrassed by us being there. When donkeys birth in the wild the other donkeys gather around and bray (VERY LOUDLY) and all interact with the foal.
