This actually makes a lot of sense. My local zoo had baby otters a couple years ago and I was there during one of if not their first time being taken for a swim and their mom would pick up one put them in the water and go to get the other. in that time the pup would hurry out of the water. She repeated this many many times over.

I wonder what ever happened to the injured baby.. If there wasn't a zoo with available space or care for him he could have gone to a facility like Animal Wonders Montana. They take care of displaced wildlife that can't be rereleased into nature. Most end up living out their life there and become "animal ambassadors" that help educate people about their species. They have a youtube channel where they upload all kinds of informative videos weekly.

Don't euthanize the otter baby. WTF. He doesn't need a zoo to be taken care of. A wildlife sanctuary or a human licensed to keep him as a pet(who knows how to provide for him properly)would be something you can do for him. What kind of foster parents kill a baby just because there isn't somewhere oddly specific for it to go? Just...WTF 😒
@Gartneren1234
@Gartneren1234 6 жыл бұрын
What you just said right there kind of reminds me of this one zoo we have in my country. The zoo had a director for some 36years,and he had a reputation for doing whatever it took to save whatever animal he knew could survive. His list of rescued animals are extensive. It includes everything from lambs, foxes, frogs, a river otter, squirrels, and more. And that list is just the animals he rescued prior to finding a job at the zoo. His father was a farmer and worked with the wild life conservatory, so naturally he ended up caring for all kinds of animals... His job as a zoo keeper, and later the director of the zoo, only expanded his caretaking duties even further. And he was no stranger of trying unorthodox methods to keep the animals alive. A litter of otters who was abandoned by their mother ended up being raised by a cat who had lost her kittens to stillbirth, and a kangaroo was carefully raised by him himself. Even today, a decade after he formally retired, he still keeps on raising and helping whatever animals comes his way. But it has come at a price. According to sources, only hamsters are the animals who have not caused him any harm. He was frequently bitten as a child and teenager, was hospitalized at the age of 17 after he was trampled by a Moose, bitten straight through his right hand by a hippo, was frequently bitten, bruised, and beaten by all kinds of animals, several of which required hospitalization, and he was permanently disfigured on his left hand after a chimpanzee bit off his pointy finger and severely scarred him.

They're stupid. People have otters as pets, it's basically cuter version of cat/dog that likes to swim more. WTF with this nonsense. Better to kill him than let him live as a pet in a loving home, but with less space to swim ... logic. I'm pretty sure that otter would prefer swimming just in bathtub, than be murdered ...

Why euthanize? Wouldn't it be better to release into the wild and have at least a fighting chance?
@Freshie207
@Freshie207 7 жыл бұрын
For whatever reason it's the direction that lots of animal ethics groups lean towards, my understanding is that generally any suffering is thought of as more cruel than death. A close friend of mine works as a Researcher of Gidgee Skinks which are one of the few very sociable lizards and as part of his task animal ethics requires him to note if any lizard is injured (say a limp or something) or separated from the group, then submit a formal essay discussing the Skink's odds of survival at which point it is either required to be taken to a vet (Which doesn't happen as this legitimately would take 2 days of driving and blow the research budget) or immediately kill it, rather than having it struggle or get picked of by a Hawk.

TFrills no need at all to euthanize that otter because even living with the odds against it is worth it, just to be alive is amazing who knows if there is anything after death and who are we to decide he deserves zero chance. Besides otters seem to be pretty much playful and happy even as pets I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Natanate Mahavanich Watch a video of a mother otter dragging a pup underwater and you will realize this is way too gentle. They don’t like the water at first but are forced to swim. The absolutely have to be able to swim to survive it is not optional. Imagine a bird that can’t fly? Wouldn’t do to well.
@tokeninja1996
@tokeninja1996 6 жыл бұрын
@@kurtvonfricken6829 I highly disagree with your comment. Look how he just put them back and watch them swim without actually trying to help them swim in the process. I just watched this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5SQYmaGa76VldE It seems clear to me that this is proper teaching done by a mother. She drags her cubs back into the water with her. You don't teach a baby how to walk by pushing him/her expecting her to walk do you? Edit: Also, gentleness means almost nothing to wild animals in most cases. Even house cats like it rough.
