Giant otters are one of the toughest creatures in the Amazon jungle. Not only are they living in a lake in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, but they are also surrounded by three hundred black caiman, anaconda, jaguar and puma. Diablo the giant otter also has six unruly pups to keep from harm, and educate in the ways of the jungle. This otter dad certainly has his paws full. Leading wildlife cameraman Charlie Hamilton-James follows the family in their remarkable location over the course of a whole season, through their ups, downs, and the start of a new generation of otters.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of astounding, entertaining, thought-provoking and educational natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

My mother was a beast. She used to do the same with me in the sea, she hugged me and started to swim towards the waves __"take a deep breath" __ she would say every few secconds, and down we went beneath the wave and up again to the surface where i had to catch a breath before diving again. I would undergo that sort of torture until we reached the zone without waves, then we were just half way from the end __"don't go any further"__ my father shouted. Several wallows in the waves until i was back on shore laying like a sand bag on my father's torso.

I can't believe 1/2 of them don't drown during that lesson. Of course we totally trust the parents, but the whole thing seems humorously ungraceful and perilous :). So surprised to hear it's a lesson. It would be incredible if humans did the same thing in the same manner :). The babies must know to close their nostrils and mouths...kind of like our infants do in water...hmm...may be deeply genetic. Cool.

It’s true, Ive seen it myself yrs ago at the YMCA pool when I was on the swimming team. The human mother blows air in the infant baby’s face, that triggers the infant to hold its breath, the baby is let go and submersed for several seconds and floats back up on its own. The babies were definitely under a year old. There was also a 2yo toddler who could swim and even go off the low diving boards.
